These videos are pure gold!!!! I was having heart problems, afib and stuff, and tested with high cholesterol. They were going to put me on statins. I watched What the Health on Netflix, and after seeing in particular Dr. Kahn the cardiologist, I immediately went on a whole food plant based diet. I had my blood tested THREE WEEKS later and my cholesterol was well within safe levels. THREE WEEKS!!!! The doctor wasn't even interested in what I did. I told him about my diet. He just said, well, whatever you're doing, just keep walking. What an idiot!!! I fired him and found a new primary care doctor. Food is the absolute foundation for health, I see that so clearly now. I've lost 85 lbs since then.
My dad at 54 had a massive heart attack in 1983 as he smoked, drank beer, ate candy and ate poorly for decades. He gave up that lifestyle and ditched everything, ate beans and brown rice and veggies and fruits, walked and he lived 3 mos shy of 90! My cardiologist said proof that changing your lifestyle and diet works!!❤
I find the most frustrating part of conversations with my doctor is the lack of acknowledgment of how much food can change our health. It seems that the doctors I've talked with only care about the drugs.
I think the reason is many doctors don't know, and some feel that if it wasn't taught in medical school, it isn't valid. I think that view is changing with younger doctors coming and the older ones retiring. Just my opinion, I am 73.
As crazy as this sounds MDs aren't taught nutrition in medical school. The docs who know nutrition do so because they were interested and studied it on their own.
Doctors are not going to spoon feed you oatmeal every morning or spank you when you eat a cheeseburger everyday for lunch. Your health is your responsibility.
My cholesterol was 265 and I told the doctor I am not taking any meds and add Lot of fiber to my diet and 51/2 months later it was down to 219. My triglyceride went down also. I just need to stick to my way of eating lots of vegetables and food high in fiber.
As a long time subject (lab rat) in (25+ studies) at a medical school/VA vascular research lab I have been very impressed with the excellent nutritional education levels of the PhD pre and post doctoral students. What floors me is the near ignorance of many MD's when it comes to nutrition. I have heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. If you know what I'm saying you are in my boat, up to a point. I have never been diabetic, I always have great lipid numbers. Because of my "hobby" I have had every test known to be relevant including a very recent heart catherization because I have pulmonary hypertension and liver complications, but still great lab results. Decent cath results. Calcium score 0. I should be very, very healthy but am not because of a terrible sweet tooth. I am fat. Probably the only reason I have such great results is because this doc is RIGHT! I tend to be vegetarian and love things like beans and apples and all things from the garden and orchard. They have saved me so far and I'm 80. Eat your apples and beans!
I’m not familiar with your various medical conditions, but I had a terrible sweet tooth all my life. Recently I had a coughing virus for 3 weeks and was mostly housebound. I only had sugar-free applesauce available. 3 weeks abstinence was all it took to lose a life-long sweet tooth. No more cravings. I wish it happened sooner. I feel like a different person. Sugar is lethal. Good luck 🍀
These doctors are taught to put you in a box, your height, weight, age, so on. Never trying to work with you about nutrition, I am so tired of this bull. Shit, not saying some pills you made need to take, but teaching these Dr's about nutrition is a must, but big pharma won't make any money!!
Finished my pre-med, but couldn't pursue my MD due to mommy-hood. Now, as I am dreaming of somehow returning in my later years, I come across you, a doctor I finally 100% agree with nutritionally speaking. My dad followed the diet/lifestyle you are recommending. He was still playing squash, an intense sport at 78, even running 6 miles at a time on hilly terrain. His cardiologist said he could pass for a 20 year old- cardiologically speaking. (He died of an unrelated disease.) I think your video is a bit of a masterpiece! ~addressing nutritional trends, discussing heart disease from a historical perspective, discussing very specific nutrients in certain foods and why they are helpful physiologically, and so forth. Thank you for this very comprehensive video!! ( I left my cabbage out, once chopped.) I look forward to seeing other videos from you. Thanks, and blessings to you!
Thank you for this detailed video. This is one of the most informative videos about cholesterol I have watched on RU-vid and you break everything down and explain it in layman's terms.
I had my gallbladder removed 12 months ago. I’m having plenty of stomach problems. I had full battery of tests. I have GERD, diverticulosis in four main parts of my intestine. I have fatty liver disease too. I’ve been watching these videos to educate myself about how to eat. So far, so good! I am gluten intolerant, dairy intolerant and I’m reactive to foods like broccoli and cabbage. But I’m learning to add a little fiber one day at a time and I’m sticking to raw and fresh veggies and fruits. I also took myself off of added sugar. I don’t eat processed foods anymore. Only nice grains, fruits and vegetables, eggs and a little meat and fish. I’m losing weight and feeling better!
As usual, you packed the video with knowledge and actionable information. Maybe one day all MDs will take nutrition as seriously. Thank you for the time and effort you put into your channel. 🙏🕉
Ive had high blood pressure since I was 26. I worked out and ate pretty good, but i started taking medicine and it helped. I felt ashamed that I needed something at such a young age. Im about to turn 50 now, in menopause and have gained 50 pounds in the past 5 years😢 Now my cholesterol was bad and my lipoprotein little A was high and the heart doctor told me it was my genetics and if I only ate salad it wouldn’t change because of the blood test he did. That was hard to hear. Im on a statin now😢 Im trying to learn more and hopefully by incorporating these foods that the Dr. is discussing into my diet my blood work will get better. God Bless everyone on here. Don’t never stop trying ❤️Christy
I am disgusted with my family doctor when my cholesterol is high. he tells me that I'm still ok when my levels are at 6.3. and he doesn't tell me what I should do. I basically have to research it myself how to reduce my cholesterol levels. I think a lot of doctors don't know how to reduce a patience's illness other than giving them pills. Luckily I stumble onto this site and I think you said all the good things that I need to do for myself. I believe you are the greatest Doctor here to explain us what we should be doing to help ourselves. Keep up the good work Doc! I'm a subscriber now.
There is also a chemical reaction that takes place when we chop allium vegetables (onions, garlic, shallots, leeks). Those should also stand before being heating. Another option with cruciferous vegetables is to add some raw ones to the same meal like coleslaw, broccoli sprouts or mustard seed.
Wow, finally!! Comprehesion 9f the source of saturated fats and T2D insulin resistance. I have gone down from 250 units of Lantus to 30 and leveled off there. Now hopefully i can make more progress!! I have lost around 100 lbs and need to loose 40 lbs more to reach 190. I am outliving my relatives ages so i am doing good!! 54 years and living it!!!
I love how easy it is to follow the sequence of our choices to the eventual outcomes for our health either good or bad. I am sure most all of us (including myself) try to eat healthier foods but have areas where improvement is needed. Thank you for making this interesting and informative video!
Organic Fuji apples are my favorite. I was only eating a small one every other day because I thought they were Not good to eat everyday. Thank You for the good news. 4 a day sounds good to me!
I eat at least one a day. Apples Apples Apples. I drink water, green tea, and a mushroom/coffee blend powder. No smoothies because you lose a lot of fiber. No animal proteins, whole food plant based
Dr. Liu - I appreciate your knowledge. I would love to see a typical day of food you consume, which would not only be nutritionally informative but also how you balance amounts/quantity ratios. TY.
My dad almost died from shigella. They misdiagnosed him with " appendicitis" and operated him!! So helpful to see this video. His cholesterol remained high for life. Mine is super high. I'll check myself for shigella! Thanks!!
I never heard of shigella. I've heard of other things like salmonella and contaminated foods, but not shigella. One would think that it would be in the public domain by now with so many people getting it yearly. I learn something new almost daily.
I love listening to you. You remind me what I alread know and reinforce what needs to be reinforced. I love that you have these little "almost" non-sequetors here and there. They are interesting side comments that add to the content.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I can’t think of anyone who can explain complicated medical issues with the clarity that any lay person can understand. Thank you and keep up the great work. 🙏
Please put out a cookbook and/diet please! Esp those who have diabetes, fatty liver, overweight, high cholsterol. This would be greatly received! I had that coronary calcium scan it was zero!!! My Dr was shocked and said better than his! I want to get off all my meds. My goal to plant based diet. My goal this year and next year. Do you recommend paleo?
Your videos are wonderfully informative, and your B-roll and graphics are the best I've seen. Thank you for doing this; your channel is a new favorite now!
Had a hella gallbladder attack in 2020. Passed a 7.5cm gallstone. Still have my gallbladder. Changed my diet, still have my gallbladder and no issues in 4 years
WOW!!! This is one of the most intelligent and informative videos on nutrition I have heard on a very long time. Thank you doctor! 👍👍👍👍 🧡. 🌹 Subscribed
Thank you doctor, I've been watching some of your videos and this one has had the most influence to me. Especially when you said in 3 days we can restore our gut health with more whole foods and fiber. And cutting up cruciferous vegatables and letting them set for 30 minutes? before cooking, increases certain benefits to our bodies. You pact a lot info in one setting. So I'll have to watch it again.I appreciate your research too. 😊
In the past two years, I have been grinding my own flour from organic wheats to make bread. It sounds like this bread is one of the best foods for my family. We also live in apple country. Glad to know we have a couple good things going for improving our health.
I appreciate your knowledge. I would love to see a typical day of food you consume, which would not only be nutritionally informative but also how you balance amounts/quantity ratios. TY.
This is a very thorough video! It's recommended alongside a Mcdougall video on high blood pressure. On Mcdougall diet here and lowered my total serum cholesterol from 210 mg/dl to 120, 7 years ago at age 48. That's why I did it. It also lowered weight by 50 lb and blood pressure enough to come off the medication, which also controlled high resting heart rate. I no longer have that either. Now, 7 years later, everything is good except weight is now down just 35 lb and I plan on fixing that.
This half year i almost died 4 times due to Thrombosis. I then consume vit d3+v2 (mg4) . My condition drastically return to rather normal in 2 weeks. I no longer have chest pain
The FDA (food and drug admiration) should not be in the same sentence. This is why trillions are made in health insurance. They are criminals. I am grateful for individuals like you. Thank you for being a super hero. We need more individuals like you. God bless you.
Wow I could not agree more with everything you relayed in a way that was interesting and understandable, not to mention so reasonable and honest. I will be watching your other videos as I’m sure the content will be so worth watching. 👍Thank you. So many Dr.’s are just not helpful with anything to do with nutrition aside from the obvious.
This is helpful information. I need to lose 40 lbs and I'm tired of being harassed by keto/carnivore fanatics in my life. I tried strict keto for 3 weeks and felt nauseous the entire time. My only issue with beans is how to eliminate the flatulence.
I found that I had to start slowly, a few beans tossed into a salad or soup. Slowly, I increased the amount of beans to 1 cup (this took months), 😊😊and now, I no longer have issues no matter how much I eat. I think it takes time for your gut to adjust. Good luck!
What a very interesting and knowledgeable video. Everything you say is clear and defined. Most enjoyable and understandable video I have read ever..🤗🤗💐💐
Dr. Liu, you are a wealth of information to countless people around the world. Thank you for everything. I am in the process of changing my diet, but I am worried. I'm in my mid-40's and eat fairly healthy already, but I have been on three strong medications for 15 years, and they will be with me for life. Am I doomed from all the chemicals going into my body from these medications? Should I not even continue to improve my diet? I hope you have a second to provide a quick answer. Thank you.
The average person will be overwhelmed with this doc’s data mine. And I’ve yet to hear anything about the effects of exercise. She’s very knowledgeable and no doubt very confident with her competence. But not a teacher, just a data dissemination. I’d recommend she slows down the data dissemination by coming up with a basic strategy that an adult might follow to make significant improvements in their lifestyle and health. She might start by emulating Dr. Kenneth Cooper’s approach. Now there is a teacher who made a difference. Also Nathan Pritikin!
Wow thank you! Great idea! I'm literally starting a plant based diet to lose weight and overall change my health and type 2 diabetes. I have fatty liver too so need to eat better. I have started prebiotics/probiotics too. Great videos!! Ezetimbe on too!! Generic livalo and Vacepa!
I would love for you to make a video about how to reverse sarcopenia. I lost a lot of muscle from Covid and am very slowly gaining it back. I do resistance training and HIIT along with Yoga, and am a clinical exercise physiologist, so I have exercise down. There is a lot of conflicting information about nutrition, however. Many scientists say to increase quality protein, which I have done, and I supplement with leucine occasionally. I do have lactose and gluten intolerance, and most likely histamine intolerance. I can't tolerate very much alcohol at all, so when we go out, the bartender is told to make it a tiny amount. I feel sick the next day if we go out to eat, even being careful . I am now 70 and overall healthy, with nothing out of range in my lab work. I have a very high HDL and always have. I definitely would like to gain back more muscle since my body composition shows I should gain about 10 lbs. of muscle. Five would be great but I seem to be holding at 118 lbs. and am 5'6". I feel like the aging population can use all the help we can get to keep our muscle.
Hi. I’m also a clinical AEP. We get one subject on nutrition and that’s it in our degree. Muscle hypertrophy is a science. Muscle hypertrophy happens as a result of stress on the muscle. Unaccustomed resistance training damages some of the muscle. The muscle is weakened for a few days and then rebuilds the damage and adds a bit more (provided you supply the amino acid building blocks through nutrition). If you just keep doing the same loads or volume you maintain muscle because there is no longer a stress on the muscle requiring further adaptation. If you don’t exercise the muscle at all after the adaptation, the hard earned muscle you added just gets broken down to save metabolic energy. So the key to muscle gain is to work each muscle enough to trigger a stress each time (progressive overload), eat sufficient protein, especially leucine containing protein, spaced every 5 hours if you are just using a quickly absorbed supplement, and then exercise twice a week each muscle so that you do not lose the muscle you gained. Smaller muscles such as deltoids, biceps, triceps and abs can be trained more frequently.
I am 100% on board that we are what we eat. Can foods I stay away from. I think we can all benefit from Info. on proper food preparation of the foods that are good for us that do need to be cooked
Great video, but I disagree on eating the fruits at the beginning. Doing that will greatly increase your sugar and obviously the insuling response, which greatly contributes to metabolic disease
How do you get absorbable calcium through diet? I’ve been told to eat dairy- cheese and yogurt for sources of absorbable calcium. These contain saturated fat, especially cheese. I eat cheese and yogurt daily. What do you recommend for good absorbable calcium sources that will not raise cholesterol and add saturated fat to diet?
Me too, also I slice apples, add juice of 1/2 lemon, add top with cracked black pepper. Doesn't sound good but it is. I saw it on Jacques Pepin cooking show. Sounds like it wouldn't go together but it does!
Thank you so much! I have been looking everywhere for this information. I have one question: as a person with both low hemoglobin and low-ish blood pressure, but higher cholesterol, what are the best foods for rebalancing these chronic tendencies? I'm afraid that consuming liver or lean red meat is not the best strategy. I will start my meals with salad henceforth. Thanks again!
Can you do a video on Kepner, who was the first one to reverse heart disease and did it with the rice diet. I agree with most of your information, but you never mention Dr. Dean Ornish.
So cooking a batch of steel cut oats and then refrigerating it to eat the following days is actually beneficial? I often freeze some of it too when I make too much. Not for long, but it allows me to make 2 weeks worth in one go.
When you cool starch (grains, potatoes, pasta, etc.) they form resistant starch. The resistant starch functions like fiber in the GI tract. The latest science I read said as long as the food isn't reheated above 140°F the resistant starch remained. Hope that helps.
Hi Dr. Liu! I just recently found your you tube channel & so glad I did. I watched several videos & working on viewing past videos. You mentioned supplements you take & it is provided but somehow could not find it. For example the turmeric extract supplement, how can I find out what you are taking. Bit B12? Also where is best place to buy nutritional yeast, garbanzos & beans. Thank you so much! Keep up the Good Work so I can watch more educational video.
nacproplus.com/ I take most of my daily supplements here which has turmeric and B12. I think you can buy those products in multiple grocery stores. They are all very common to find. I stick to low salt or no salt and organic beans when possible. I prefer Bragg's nutritional yeast.
