Our buddy Matt stops by with his custom built 2500 work truck that Scram Speed built specifically for WORKING. Under the hood it packs a 408 LS with AFR heads, forged bottom end, Bullseye TCT 80-87 turbo, and a Jakes 4L80E transmission. Whole turbo kit was hand built by Scram Speed, using a stock Duramax radiator and intercooler.

That is really cool guys, as it comes at you it appears to be a duramax with a loud turbo then as it passes, you notice it’s gas!

Now this is a build I can get behind. Don’t wanna spend 50k on a diesel? Slap a turbo on a 15k gasser and it works all the same for 20k. Awesome

You can buy a diesel for 10k. Just leave the truck stock so it stays reliable. That’s why you buy gas anyway, not for power.

Everyone thinks it’s worth it’s weight in gold. Vehicles with bad trans or engines are pulling 7-8k. Not a shot in hell your getting a good diesel for 10k. Don’t get it mixed up.

Who says you need a diesel to pull heavy trailers. Just a turbo! And everything that goes with adding a turbo. Huge difference between Matt's truck and my stock 02HD with 6.0L and 4L80E. Mine is working pretty hard with about 12,000lbs behind it.

Very nice truck, really like the blue color. The sound is nothing but bad. Wondering it the turbo helped MPG on the truck. I have a 6.0 in a 1999 Chevy 2500 Excab 4x4 tow package 3.73 rear gears. Great engines the 6.0. Bought it with 110,000miles now it got 214,000 still going strong. I have two other Chevys a 2001 2500HD Excab 4x4 Duramax LB7 94,000 miles; and a 2004 3500 Crewcab 4x4 8.1 (496ci) 4.10 rear gears. All three are good pulling trucks. Would like to see and know more about the Blue Chevy 6,0 turbo.

Do you have a link to the crank case vent box y’all used? Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s what that was sitting behind the overflow tank? I need something similar to vent mine. Looks real good!

Nice.. big inches ls motor and a camshaft spec for low rpm torque. Or even go bigger with gen7 gasser Big block with turbo. I know you can't beat low low rpm diesel. But try as much a possible for low rpm and low boost torque on a gasser. Don't even think about hp. I like to see any body would try that. For towing high rpm not good. Only for fun and short distance its ok, or showing off ur truck.

Truck is right around 6k. It had about 800-1000lbs of salt in the bed. Truck was 6940lbs, trailer 5660lbs, skid 9900lbs. Truck+trailer=12,000lbs Trailer+skid=15,560lbs Truck+trailer+skid=22,500lbs

Jesus that would be so damn sick. I tow 6-12k+ daily in my 04 2500hd 6.0 and I'm dying for more power. I see the Duramax radiator and intercooler, but how does it run with those e-fans?

How well does it do pulling more than its factory rates for at 12k? Mine is an 07 classic regular cab 2wd 6.0/4l80e with a 4.10 gear. Only rated at 10k. The 2wd reg cab has the highest towing capacity out of all the body styles. More the truck weighs, just subtracts from gvw. 16k gvw for these trucks.

@@dickbrugh5562 That's just the factory rating. I've pulled 12k with a 03 extra cab 2wd 4.8L/4L60E, 3.73 gear. Just had brake controller, 10 ply load e tires, air shocks in the rear and hitch with anti sway control bar. That's about 3 or 4k more than the factory rating with the small LS and weak transmission, small brakes and small rear axle. Didn't go down mountains but did several 800 mile round trips along the I-10 and changed the trans fluid more often.

I’m thinking about boosting my 2500hd and trying to figure out what turbo to go with. I’ll pull at most 8500lbs maybe 10 times a year. It’s my daily and might drive 15 miles a day.

Yes it currently has a Jakes 4L80E that has been treating him very well. Only hickup we had was trans temps due to the converter. Had to install a massive setrab cooler and it seemed to do the trick.

I have a 2006, 6.0 Silverado basically stock besides a cold air intake and a tuner. I want to do this to my truck but still be able to use it for truck stuff like towing a heavy trailer or run through a mud hole. Would I still be able to do these things if I souped it up like this?

Chose a setup that makes power down low. Stick to a truck cam, i think texas speed's stage 2 truck cam is the most you can go before it sacrafices low down torque and still makes more power up top when youre not pulling something. Pair it with a smaller turbo, something that spools quick down low but dosent choke out when youre really reving it out. Youre not going to make as much power as someone who went balls to the wall but itll make useable power down low and still be a lot faster than it used to be.

I have a 2011 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 with the iron block 6.0, I'm researching putting a cam / long tube headers / twin screw supercharger to achieve this type of power to tow my 12k RV. Thoughts? I'm also curious as to what mpg this turbo gasser is getting towing this load?

It's just hard to justify supercharger money when you can literally turbo a truck for half the cost. Even less than half if you fab up your own merge using the stock exhaust manifolds etc. Heat management with a screw blower is another issue. I can imagine IAT's towing with one would be pretty spicy. Those sandwich type intercoolers work well. But they're expensive as hell and make the SC sit really high up. As for fuel mileage I can imagine it's not great. I'd be surprised if it's getting 10 mpg once it gets into boost.

Agreed with the other guy, turbo setup is cheaper and imo better optimized for heavy loads. S/c is rpm dependent but turbo is load dependent. Both will make major torque but the turbo is kind of more fluid and wont be as inefficient at low load/light cruising.

I have a question. Where does the exhaust coming from the turbo get routed to. It looks really tight on the passenger side. I’m doing the same kind of setup with my suburban 2500 and the engine bay fills up fast.

Where did you get 6940 for the truck? Single cab 2500 6.0 should be closer to 5300-5400 full fluids maybe 5600 with added weight of turbo setup and gooseneck

@@Scramspeed Well scale was weigh off or he had something else going on because nearly 7k lbs for a single cab 2500 is way off. Even a 2500 Suburban is going to weigh maybe 6k. A 1500 will weigh about 4500 lbs and the main differences between a 1500 and 2500 is the rear axle (about 200 lbs heavier), more leaf springs (no more than 60 lbs) the driveshaft (15 lbs), a 4L85E trans (85 lbs heavier) and front end about another 100-200 lbs, radiator and HD cooling maybe another 25 lbs.

Not any more difficult or time consuming than typical swap stuff. It had a few teething problems like every serious custom build does, but nothing major.

Supercharger would likely be cheaper and easier, and give good low end power. You'd be paying for it in gas mileage though. I'd personally go turbo

Well, I know fuel economy is largely dependent on driving habits. Lets just say mileage probably isn't as good as it could be.

@@timphilmon8573 I don't really keep track of it. I'd say 6-8 in stop and go pulling a trailer. Obviously how much weight your pulling is going to change it also. I've got a heavy foot so that doesn't help either. Once you get up to speed and the convertor locks it drives pretty normal!

If I had to throw a number at it I'd say somewhere around 700 to the wheels.

It made right around 650rwtq on 12psi. The heavier the load the more load the turbo has. In this video it drives a lot like a diesel. About quarter throttle and its at psi pulling that much weight. Once up to speed it's back in vacuum driving like stock.

You have no idea what you're talking about. The setup is built specifically for what it has. Forged internals, etc. People with clean, well put together combos, like this, know what they're doing and know who to reach out to to further back what they're doing. Customer did not want too much torque down low. When it has the plow on the front and salt spreader on the back he had concerns about just spinning immediately when trying to push snow. Decided to keep a higher RPM intake to keep the torque soft in the lower RPM area.

You would be much better off using the stock intake manifold if you're towing with that setup. Probably losing 80-100 ftlbs in the mid range with that short runner stuff. It's been proven time and time again those manifolds don't produce hardly any gains until 6k+. Now if it's just for looks, then whatever. LS3 intake manifold or a FAST manifold is by far the best choice for 90% of people.

@@allanb3222 More torque up top? He isn't towing at 5500 RPM. When you're towing, you're lugging the engine, you're nowhere near the efficiency range of that short runner intake manifold. I doubt the camshaft is even correct for that style of intake manifold.

Depends on how much weight it has behind it. If it's just the truck it has some lag. With the weight of the trailer in the video, it's basically instant.

I’m shocked you were getting 6940 for truck weight. My 2005 crew cab short bed diesel SRW weighs about 7100 with a 50 gallons of fuel and me in it.

truck had 1k lbs of salt in the bed. 2 passengers plus 1k salt, truck probably sits around 56-5700. pretty close to stock.

​@8SecSleeper they don't make a regular cab short bed 2500hd just FYI. Toolbox full of stuff is couple hundred pounds. Plow bracket is a 100lbs. The turbo itself is probably 50+lbs. Has a big intercooler.... this isn't a stock truck at stock weight. It's also 4x4 if you happen to miss that too.

The high ram seems like a bad choice and just extra unnecessary money the factory would probably be better everywhere below like 5 grand for no money extra but at those power numbers the stroker was unnecessary its not like its going to make it any more reliable and its not like its going to make much of a difference with the turbo if its not way to big which if its making 650 i assume its not

The customer specifically wanted the high ram to knock some torque out of the bottom end. Half the year this truck has a snow plow and salt spreader attached. He claims it is nicer to push snow with something that doesn't make instant torque to just spin the tires. Plus it looks way cooler.

I’m doing just that! Lol I have an lbz duramax, but I just bought a 6.0 truck to turbocharge that’ll replace the lbz. Diesels are just to expensive to maintain in my opinion.

Hell no....that thing will never outlast or out pull a diesel, especially doing it efficiently. Diesels are way more robust and provide that torque you want way down low, but to each their own.👍

@@2015_Rubicnn 120k mile one owner truck, one month after I bought it from the original owner it needed a full set of injectors that cost me over $5k. I can build a complete 6.0 lq4 for that price. Lol

You can build them gas engines in them trucks to handle them loads who says you have to have a diesel to do everything and especially when diesel engines are more expensive to work on pickup class not 🚛🚫

I hold trailers for fema After katrina, , After gas expenses, I made three dollars and fifty cents an hour. The guy's driving diesel trucks slept at a hotel. I slept after I ran out of gas money.

No I won't say that you have to also understand they were using Big blocks back in the day for buses and dump trucks and duallys back then a lot of them had gas 396 or 454 Big blocks in they were pretty rugged and last a long time in can take a beating. for instance my uncle had a Chevy Silverado 96 with a big block in it that thing pulled a three car hauler like it wasn't nothing the engine was rebuilt but it was pretty strong. The only thing a diesel may have advantage is torque in gas consumption you take that turbo off of it it's just like a gas motor. Turbo gas big block like a 454 or 502 it's a different ball game when it comes to the pickup truck class

Truck is right around 6k. It had about 800-1000lbs of salt in the bed. Truck was 6940lbs, trailer 5660lbs, skid 9900lbs. Truck+trailer=12,000lbs Trailer+skid=15,560lbs Truck+trailer+skid=22,500lbs
