Lucille Ball on The Johnny Carson show. Sorry for the bad copy, will try and get it better next time.
BTW the gift lucy brought for Johnny was a cup of earth worms gift wrapped beautifully. lucy was pushing the idea of earth worms and their necessity for gardening at the time. The video was recorded from another device and not a video conversion,. so I did not control the edit or tracking

junk can oh I had no idea this interview was in 1977, I thought it was the 1980s. Wow time did fly by, Lucille Ball would be 107 now, and Johnny would have been 93 in October 23, 2018. He would probably still be alive now. They both left us way to soon, she was only 78 in 1989 and he was 79 in 2005, we could have had her throughout the 90's, and early 2000's, and with Johnny he was very reclusive and didn't like the lime light, but I'm sure he would have wrote a book, and did very rare interviewers on podcast here and there. They were both national treasures.

Most actors are very insecure, that is why they are good at acting. They are projecting a persona, not their real selves. Most are always trying different parts to find a persona that feels good to them. Some never developed a regular personality and that is good for the rest of us to a point. But sad in a way, we all love them because they are not afraid to be someone else and take a risk doing it. If they have the gift of sponteniety the comedy follows. Without that they fail and they feel it first when that happens. I am glad the good ones keep on going, they are a legend when they are good and we see them shine. It makes all of us feel better. Johnny seems very comfortable in himself and that is why he was good at what he did. He was good at letting his guests shine and just asking the right questions and listening. Lucy looked tired and old here, but she was. She is worthy of praise for the experience and comedy she brought to all of us. She is kind of a matriarch in a sense but nobody could replace her, only use some clues as to how to better their own craft. For example Carol Burnett had her own persona she developed which was funny in a different way. All great in their diversity.

Roger Cain Carol Burnett got her start on the Gary Moore show he had a 1hour show in the late 50s early 60 the good old days when TV was clean free from sex and Homosexualty, cussing but they were funny with out all that stuff that's why we love them and miss them today. Even old Bill Cosby was funny and clean. I'm just sorry he didn't use his brain instead of his head he would be in the trouble he is in now. What a shame people let sex ruin their life. He is not the only one. Charlie Sheen has aids now and drugs he was very funny but now he is a hasbeen. Like alot of other stars have become. That we forgot about but we still hear from time to time of getting off after they killed their wife and x wife. Or they kill their self for some odd reason. It's sad we have so much bad in our world today compared to these shows in the 50s &60s

You can see how uncomfortable Lucy was on this program. She said that Johnny intimidated her, because she felt that he was more talented than she. She admitted to always being nervous when she appeared on his show. She said in a separate interview that she could do funny things based on what was written for her, but that Johnny had a brilliant comedic mind and created his own laughs via his terrific comedic mind. Her response to her nerves was to be caustic and overly direct, but underneath it all, she was scared.
@Bigbadwhitecracker

Actually, I prefer her in a setting like this without a script. I mentioned above an episode of I've Got A Secret from 1959 where Johnny is on the panel and they have to guess Lucy's secret. What ensure is one of the funniest 10 minutes of live tv I've ever seen. She proved to be a master at improv.

to some she would appear mean, but watching her shows when new and reruns, is behavior many comedians took. they wait to allow audience to get it, and doing all this is most often done without them laughing. i remember as a child, when watching, it had very often been commented that to laugh at ones own "funny" was frowned upon. but what a blast she cont. into all 3 of her series. seems there was a 4th ( im too old to recall lol)

@knowallcity- It's said that she didn't like thinking about life after death unless it was appropriate- when thinking of religion or life practices- but in her mind she was probably thinking "Here i am, on a TV show, all dolled up, having so much happiness going on, and your asking me about a time period where I dont even think i'll be around in?" It just wasnt an upbeat or interesting topic for her i guess lol

Many here don't "get it". I admit - I don't take well to Lucy and Desi's brand of comedy now. It seems Lucy is always conniving to get on Desi's Show or otherwise do something inane with Ethel. But it needs to be remembered - this was in the early 50's on into color TV. If one had 4 stations - they were lucky. If people didn't laugh - or thinks her voice was screechy - women had little place on TV. Look at crap now. Lucy trail blazed in 2 rooms basically and it was 1X a week not reruns 7X as now

Hmmm. This kinda makes sense now; "You're not that interested in me, Johnny. I know you like me, but you're not interested in the inner me.." She's talking about the time they were at a party together, and the men were in one room having a conversation and the women were in the other room. Cher and Lucy were together, and both of them started making wise-ass comments to the men and Carson got peeved at one point, and was asking Cher to leave! Lucy dragged her in the other room, laughing.

jess00821 there was a awkward interview she had with Dick Cavett were she was not really into the interview in 1974, although she adores Dick Cavett and has been on his late night talk show meny times and the two have been really good friends. On this particular day back in the 1974 she seem not into Dick Cavett adolescence, young man, perverted, fantasies, about her in her 1930's and 1940's movies, he kept saying uncomfortable stuff like how he fantasized about her in a movie were he thought the ladies in the movie were naked, but they were wearing white bikinis, and he would say "what that did to a young man in those days", she wasn't really amused by his sexist questions. I highly recommend that interview.

@LKKruse- I dont think so...she WAS responsible for putting many of those shows on the air. The shows that DID make it were good and bad. THIS TAKES NOTHING AWAY FROM DESI. He helped shape Hollywood. If some of the shows that he FOUGHT to put on, were never on, some of hollywood would have never been impacted. So I do understand where your coming from too.
