In this video I make a rain and wind-swept visit to the costal Island of Lundy, United Kingdom. One of the UK's declared greatest natural wonders. Travelling on the Island's supply ship: the 1950s era MS Oldenburg.
Lundy is the largest island in the England's Bristol Channel. It lies 10 nautical miles (19 km) off the coast of the county of Devon. Lundy gives its name to a British sea area and is one of the islands of England. Taking its name from the Puffin, a rare seabird that is found on the islands cliffs.
Lundy is included in the district of Torridge with a resident population of about 28 people. These include a warden, a ranger, an island manager, a farmer, bar and house-keeping staff, and volunteers. Most live in and around the village at the south of the island. Most visitors are day-trippers, although there are 23 holiday properties and a camp site for over-night visitors, most at the south of the island.
In a 2005 opinion poll of Radio Times readers, Lundy was named as Britain's tenth greatest natural wonder.
The island has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and it was England's first statutory Marine Nature reserve, and the first Marine Conservation Zone. because of its unique flora and fauna. It is managed by the Landmark Trust on behalf of the National Trust.
The island has a long and turbulent history and has changed hands many times, owned in 1100s by the Knights Templar, and usurped by the brigand Marisco Family in the 1200s. In modern times the site of the wrecking of the Battleship HMS Montagu in 1906. And the site of two Crashed German Heinkel HE111 Bombers in World War 2.
Today the Island is a semi wold sheep farm, and a popular, if challenging to visit, tourist destination.

Fantastic video. Fascinating. I've walked the SWCP and kept on seeing Lundy in the distance, tantalising. You can see it from Pembrokeshire (around Tenby) as well. Thanks for all your trouble in making this! 😊😊

Looks like a really fascinating place to visit. It's incredible to think of people living there way back in the Bronze Age. I imagine they would have had tough lives somewhat similar to ancient Icelanders, farming sheep, foraging seagull eggs or even catching seabirds, and fishing.

Great video of Lundy. Bideford is my home town yet I’ve only done the trip just once, all be it it was fantastic weather wise & we were escorted back by a pod of Dolphins. By the way for those intrested there is a small camping area allotted in the village.

Loved the video. Thanks. We used to go there on hols when we were kids in the 70's/80's with mum and dad. I now live in canada but took my kids back there a few years ago. They loved it too. One of my fav places in the whole world.

I've been to Lundy, it was two years ago and brought back some great photos from my time there. We went on the ship and it took about 2 hours in a semi rough sea to get there. But I enjoyed the day trip all the same and the pub was a real treat apart from how wild the island really was. For me, exploring the old abandoned homesteads was a real draw thinking back to who once lived in those houses. I'd love to go back again some day.

Loved it, Lived in devon for the first 22 years of my life, moved to Thailand and spent an evening in a bar in Wha Hin drinking with the engineer of the Oldenberg where he owns a cottage, turns out we know all the same people. Very odd.

I got horrendously sea sick on the way out to lundy years ago. I spent the first hour thinking i was going to die then the next hour wanting to. I was petrified about the return trip but thank god it was calm. Amazing place with some fantastic climbing. I want to go back soon bit this time i think ill splash out and get the helicopter!!

That was so interesting. I have booked to stay in the radio room for two nights for my 66th birthday as I start getting my state pension and will blow £250.00 on that :) It is also a good incentive to get fitter. I have subscribed and will proabably feature a bird watching video on my channel ~LOL~

Thanks for that video. We are first time in North Devon and we explore places around. Few days ago I didn't even know that there is any island. Beeing on the beach I noticed Lundy and started to read about it. Yesterday bought ferry ticket and I'm going with my dauther to visit island.

Thanks 👍 for making this video back in around 2000 I was on lundy island for one week helping to rebuild the long road path that goes down most of the island it was awesome the group I was with we went line hook fishing and caught fresh sardines and Pollock that I cooked also we went lookin for perigrin falcon and puffins and our guide was harpin on about something called Lundy cabbage...I went to back of island is it called devils hole or devils cove or something like that where it's a hole and a sheer drop into the sea my friend went to close to the edge got scared n frooze i had to tell him to lay on the ground carefully and do soldier crawl away from the edge I visited that little church as well we had a lady who was related to royalty helping us she was nice i think she was connected to lord cardigan I can't remember it was long ago.

It may be of interest that "mariscos" in Spanish means seafood...perhaps that is the origin of the name since there was trade up and down the Gailic / Galician coasts...

Hmm, Interesting. This prompted a memory of my visit to Lundy a good number of years ago when Filming for the TV program 'No73' , it was children's program and we were there to film a young girl resident. We flew in, Fixed wing (Islander) with all the crew and gear and we had to do a pass to scare away the sheep first ! It felt like the brakes were on before we touched down as it was so short !! But I do remember it being very tranquil (until any interview when planes would come over). Certainly recommend a visit.

Interesting video thanks - I live in South Wales and have often thought about visiting - maybe staying in one of the Landmark Trust properties. This video convinced me that I'm now too old and too soft to do the trip 😂

I believe , probably at further charge you can continue to stay in your property or similar one, if there is a vacant property. Also heard of guests staying in a small room at the rear of 'St Helena' church. very simple room bed etc , used for visiting clergy.

This is a brilliant guide. We visted Ilfracombe and made some intentative equries. Can you advise if there is any transport from the quay to the village for the elderly!

yes , if you enquire before hand there is a Land Rover which will take you & your Luggage to the top of the island from the Landing Jetty/ return you too. However being a Land Rover you would need to be able to negotiate the step up/ down etc . once booked in the Lundy reception next to the Marisco Tavern , all luggage is delivered to each property on the island & collected prior to sailing back to the mainland

yes there are. I stayed in Old Light Cottage many times& the window overlooks, Ackland Moor. At Dawn & Dusk you will see Deer on the moor grazing, although they stay some distance away

Would you say there's enough on Lundy to occupy children for 4 hours or so? We'd like to go, but we're worried they're going to get bored.

Depends on age, under 10 I would say no. To walk around the whole island and see every landmark would easily fill 4 hours, but young kids won’t be able to do that. If you get a very bad weather day (which is common) kids won’t want to be out in the driving rain …. it’ll be a grim 4 hours sat in the Tavern or Church.

Does it have a post office with lundy stamps??

yes , has a post box & mail is stamped before leaving the island with normally a 'Lundy Postmark' & 'Helicopter or 'MS Oldenburg ' ink stamp. The shop sells 'Lundy ' Puffin Stamps, Post is considerably cheaper than that of Royal Mail Postage. The island shop / MS Oldenburg both sell Stamps & First Day Covers of past stamps

Officially No. There is no cell phone coverage on the island. However in certain locations eg High ground, in good conditions you can get a weak connection from the U.K. mainland.

Virtually no Mobile Reception or Signal throughout the Island. Just 2 places you can receive / send messages etc , depends on weather etc. Outside the Marisco Tavern on the Lawn or top of 'Old Light' in the Lantern room, i found only between 22-00pm and Midnight, it's very hot & miss 😊
