My 16” MBP M1 Max is mainly a desktop replacement for me, usually docked on a 24” 4K monitor but I’ve been thinking about going to 14” model for portability and to be able to work in more locations other than home. I’m just hesitant of the smaller screen display for photo and video editing, I remember the older 13” MacBooks really felt too small for long editing sessions.

Thank you Tech Chap. I stumbled upon this video recently after purchasing a new M2 MacBook Pro base model. I'll share that last year, I mistakenly bought an M1 Max 16in 32 GB 4TB (because it was the only available laptops at the time I needed an upgraded): although it was a hefty price paid and powerful machine, I realized that it was too much power for me in the past year. Things I used the M1 16in. for were some video editing, zoom online education for a part-time job, live-streaming games, photo editing, typing up lessons, surf browsing a few times, etc. I was also on the go and believe me, to those who are considering between the 14in and 16in, the 14in size is what I would prefer people to get if you're deciding to bring your laptop everywhere for portability. If you are not into 3D modeling or heavy duty workload 4K production and such, 14in. is the one for you. You always don't have to own the biggest and latest tech too if you can find the M1 at a very good price. I also agree that the 16in. is more of a desktop replacement with its screen and heft. Although the 16in has great battery life, the 14in still lasts you throughout the day and depending on what you're using it for. In conclusion, I sold my previous 16in M1 Max as it was too powerful for my needs, and am now greatly enjoying the lighter feel to the 14in M2 Pro, great screen, ports available and the latter. This year, I purchased the M2 14in pro base model and it's still a powerful machine. I hope to anyone who reads this finds peace knowing they bought the right laptop for their specific needs and not make the same mistake as I did saving money.

Waiting for the M3 version 16. Hoping that it gets real-time raytracing like the iPhone. Of all the specs, I need to bump up memory. On my M1 with 16 GB, I hit that max limit all the time and it is frustrating. Going to max out the memory on my next Mac.

Just bought myself a 14" M2 MBP upgrading from the intel 2018 15". Unsure whether I've made the right choice! Everything definitely feels slightly smaller. I don't tend to travel a lot, but the option is definitely a plus! My laptop mainly remains at home and I normally just connect to my 4k 27 inch monitor. Is the additional weight of the 16 inch and the screen size that much more noticeable - especially if just using at home mainly? Any thoughts on whether I should return and get the 16" instead? Any help would be appreciated!
@zeroxjf
@zeroxjf Год назад
The weight of the 16-inch isn't necessarily the worst thing, it's more just how bulky it is. Doesn't fit well in places like coffee shops or airplanes. It is great if you use your computer mostly at home and it fits comfortably on your lap - but if you're on the go frequently, the 14 inch tends to be a better choice

I got the 2021 14 inch base model last summer in John Lewis for £1,733 which I thought was a decent price, so I won't be upgrading anytime soon I already find it to be one of the fastest laptops available for that price, I'm more of a Windows man tbh and I still much prefer Windows 11 to Mac OS on the other hand since Apple started making their SoC CPU's with integrated memory and GPU it really beats out any Intel/AMD laptops and even quite a few desktops. I'm trying to teach myself video editing with FCPX and DaVinci Resolve because I simply refuse to buy Adobe's shareholders a new porsche each 😁Well you know what I mean Premiere Pro is outrageously expensive and crashes very often, unlike the competition which is way cheaper plus you get to own the app or it's even free with DaVinci, I think if you're coming from an older Intel Mac and you video edit then it really would be worth the upgrade but as you suggested if you can still find the 2021 model you'd save yourself a fortune and could buy 1TB external M.2 ssd with the savings, thanks for the review

One other thing you didn't mention is that Apple charges $50 more for applecare per year for the 16 ($149 vs $99) So over the course of 3 years, that's another $150 which is just apple profiteering. You could probably make an argument that it costs them more to fix issues in a 14 than a 16 due to the smaller form factor, so I don't see any justification for that huge of a premium. Personally, based on what I do, and the fact that memory and storage is not upgradable in any manner in these machines, I will always pay a bit more for both storage and SSD space. There is nothing more annoying than constantly having to clear things out of the machine or move them around just to be able to do what you want to do. I wouldn't go with less than a 1tb main disk and 32 gigs, but then I make substantial use of virtualization, although any sort of workflow that handles a lot of data will benefit from additional memory in most cases. Having spec'd these out a good deal lately, for a 16" vs 14" with all the same specs (m2 pro, 30 core gpu, 32gb memory, 1tb) the 16" costs about $300 more (not factoring in the aforementioned applecare).

The 16” comes with a couple of bonuses: the display is larger, you will get more of that beautiful mini led display, the bezels look slimmer due to the ratios, the notch looks smaller for the same reason. The 16” gets a larger trackpad which is more convenient to use and the speakers are better giving richer sound. As far as battery life the 16” gets three hours more in terms of web browsing, and also gets a more powerful 140 watt power supply.

I ended up getting the M2 pro 14 inch base with 1tb drive upgrade and power adapter as its the best value given that apple nerfed the SSD speeds. I did some tests and the thermas are not great on M2 Pro base as it is, so I would be weary upgrading it to the full M2 Pro chip. In Canada the price of full m1 pro vs m2 pro base were about 200$ and the only downside performance wise is slightly lower multicore CPU test. The WIFI and HDMI upgrades easily make up for that. My tests had m2 pro binned running AI photo culling pinned at 6000 rpm on fans and 105-107C. Binned M1 Pro was running at 100-103 with fans at 4000 rpm. Cull time was 24:52 on M2 Pro binned 33:51 on M1 Pro binned. So we do have higher performance but also more heat. Just as a note same test on my main workstation with Ryzen 5900X with 128 Ram, CL18 3600 with full OC and liquid cooled, same sample cull took 20 minutes. Given how linearly these scale, for some tasks the Full M2 Pro could be a perfect desktop replacement for most people in a lot of workflows. As a note, I do make conditions not great for these test on purpose so the MacBook tests were ran on a bed so the airflow was not the greatest with ambient of 21C. M2 Pro binned did not actually throttle and still had 800 RPM of fan speed in reserve so given heatsync changes and higher power draw and therefore heat, I think 14s sweet spot is binned M2 Pro for price, performance, battery life and value... So what you said lol :D

the thermals are just fine the fan curves suck stock they want them to run high but make no mistake there is no issue with thermals on either the 14 or the 16
@EugeneKam
@EugeneKam Год назад
@@frostgodx I mean they are running at the limit of thermals on 14. I think for these chips throttle happens at 110 so only a few degrees of the thermal limit. My point was more that 14 is pretty close to thermal limit this M2 generation due to different smaller heat spreader on the heat sync or higher clocked chips, or combination of the two. And like I did mention the tests I did are in more extreme conditions for that specific reason to see how they perform at the limit.
@frostgodx
@frostgodx Год назад
@@EugeneKam I can appreciate an opposing view but that is just incorrect in all counts. To go into more depth the 14" only appears to be at the thermal limit when you use the stock apple fan curves/speeds which allows the chip to reach over 100c under heavy load to maintain user experience and fans not blaring loud. If you set your curves with an app like TG pro you can place a FULL 100% load on CPU and GPU for 10+ mins straight and never see a single digit above 87-88c. Though of course the fans are then sitting at 5800-6k rpm and are sitting maxed out which isnt realistic however there is still a good 15c to go before your maxing out the cooling system. Take any new windows gaming laptop and its common practice on them to run the fans at full speed and even have 3 to compensate for the heat and in many of those they are forced to throttle just to perform. These M1 and M2 chips simply are far more advanced along with the chassis redesign and cooling system being the best in a 14" on planet earth for the size. For some reason all the mainstream testing is on the stock fan profile which is pretty terrible at anything besides keeping it quiet which makes sense as thats what most people went berserk about on the intel models. As far as the heat spreader its smaller because they know they are allowing the temps on the die to go higher and dont want it to compromise the unified memory chips and shorten longevity which again makes total sense. I have done extensive testing on both 14" and 16" max 24 and 32 core gpu models since the 2021 release of the originals in this chassis and last week on release picked up a 30-core gpu 14" max and 38-core 16", i got a 38-core 14" finally delivered to me yesterday from my custom order and this is what I am basing my info from. I fully expected results like you are saying and like other videos show but again im just not when i am not running apple fan curves.
@EugeneKam
@EugeneKam Год назад
@@frostgodx I get what you are saying and I agree with creating profile, but the problem is an average consumer would not spend the 10-20$ on TG Pro to remedy the situation. The fact that you have to buy additional software to control the fans is already a fail on Apple's part in my opinion. Its a slipery slope, and that's why I appreciate most reviewers not using TG Pro to actually modify default behaviour of the machine to demonstrate the characteristics that at least 80% of the people are going to experience. At this point I could in theory get even petter pefromance via TG fan control and replacing the stock thermal compound with liquid metal and more dence memory insulation pads. As for Apple having the best thermal design, I would have to disagree. Apple is not using vapour chambers or larger heatpipes or anything really exotic that some of the other manufacturers use, including LM. The reason they are still running well enough is the ARM architecture just generally runs cooler, the actual thermal design of the chassis and heat spreader/fin stack is very generic and sourced based on cost to adequate enough cooling performance rather than anything else. Which is one of the reason why they chose to go with more dense NAND chips compare to M1 generation. The cost difference for chips themselves is about 1.10 dollars going from less to more dense memory, and loosing 40% of the speed. These are rough numbers based on and cost themselves. Add a few seconds for extra chip placement and fractions of cens for extra soldier and storage costs and you are very little to loose quite a bit on these machines. Buts that's pretty off topic. Apple products like any other company ultimately has the products built in a happy compromise between engineering and accounting departments.

I would be tempted to say the 16" MacBook Pro. If portability is your priority than go with the Air. If you're not a content creator (video) I would go with the Framebook (hope I got the name right) as it allows DIY users to configure the laptop, although there are some isses that may be a dealbreaker, e.g. screen, fan noise and battery life. Apple is simply too expensive after getting a decent amount of RAM and sufficient storage to overcome the slow speeds of the lower capacity storage options. And if you need Windows software then the virtual machine software is also an added cost. Apple is simply too expensive for what it is once extra memory and storage, and better processor performance upgrades are factored in. Not to mention that it is a boat anchor if anything goes wrong or it becomes too slow down the road because you can't upgrade it. As for residual value, yes Apple is better simply because there are fools out there that are willing to buy obsolete Apple laptops to get that stupid logo on the screen cover, e.g. old MacBooks with Intel processors.
