Im still plenty happy with my 14” m1 pro machine :) tbh, it really does seem like you can have a professional work flow on all m1 machines, regardless of tier. I got rid of m1 Mac mini bc I wanted portability, but I really don’t think I needed the extra hp for Logic Pro.

Hi guys and thank’s for all your hard work. I’ve been following along for quite some time now and went with your initial suggestion on getting the 48 core Ultra instead of the 64 core. Ordered directly from Apple on march 16th and just had an e-mail from Apple informing me it should arrive next Tuesday may 3rd. Initially Apple stated it would take 10 to 12 weeks to arrive (living in Canada and all...), but now it seems i’ll be getting it after 7 weeks (minus one day). I probably won’t be a good (objective) candidate to evaluate the Studio combo since i’ll be upgrading from a dying mid 2011 27’’ iMac. I’m pretty sure i’ll just be overwhelmed by the performance of the computer and the Display’s image quality. Aside from my TV i’ve never seen a 4k display up close let alone a 5k one. This being said the damm box better be quiet or it’s going right back to Apple no matter how long it takes to get another one. I’ve waited this long, a few months won’t make a difference you know ? Although i wish it be ‘’perfect’’ right out of the box. Have a great day guys 🙂

Received my Mac Studio 2tb on Thursday 4/28 that I waited about a month for. Had the horrendous fan noise. The replacement offered eta was June 23. Spinning down the fan to 1100rpm was very helpful along with moving the Mac Studio about 3 feet away from me. The genius bar confirmed they could hear the high pitched noise but their floor model doesn't have the issue. Oddly, I am leaning towards keeping this unit because it is the devil i know versus the one I don't.

When the fan inevitably gets full of dust, how will you clean the fan? Disassembling Mac Studio is major surgery, with lots of small delicate parts and wires that could be easily damaged.

Faster chips can cause software problems been through this in past as a server admin. Things are executing so much faster that things that were in a loop waiting for something to finish do realize what it was waiting for was already done before the loop was even setup. That and overly simplified description of issues I had to deal with a couple times. So increase speed can create a whole new world of pain for software. Especially software that is timing based.
@lm6036
@lm6036 2 года назад
That is poorly written software then.
@DerekDavis213
@DerekDavis213 2 года назад
No modern, properly written software will FAIL if it runs on a faster processor. There are so many different Intel, AMD, Apple silicon chips out there, the software cannot depend on very specific, timing conditions. What you are describing was true with some video games, 20 years ago.

Loving my Ultra/64/128/4 machine. So quiet, cool, and fast for everything I do. Lightroom Classic 53,000 NEF photo imports (2TB of images) and previews done in well under an hour. The facial recognition is incredibly fast too. Finally a usable feature! Also the Topaz suite of Denoise, Gigapixel, Sharpen, & video upscaling is insanely quick. I wasn’t normally a video guy as it was too frustrating slow to process on my old rig but I’m finally using FCP and applying something like stabilisation is now a few seconds instead of minutes! My only concern is that the WindowServer process seems to be taking up 30% of the GPU with 3 monitors (5K & 2x4K) when not doing anything. I’m not sure if that’s slowing down the applications when I actually need the GPU power. Would love to know why it’s busy all the time. Oh and it took very little time to load over 100GB of application data into RAM. I’m not regretting the 128GB RAM option! Main regret is not going for the 8TB internal storage as the price increase from 4TB actually is competitive to an external NVMe connection but would also have been faster. Great buy! Studio Display is still on order and I’m guessing that will be the let down given the camera seems to be junk.
@ArielBrener
@ArielBrener 2 года назад
Nobody talks about it but Apple computers are having trouble using 4k monitors with scaling because needs to convert it into 5k and then split it in half. So that is the reason your GPU is working hard even when ideling. The way to solve it is to downgrade to 1400p monitors. Or use all 5k
@RossWynne

@@ArielBrener Much appreciated for the pointer. Did some research after your comment and I can understand the issue somewhat. Just ordered a second Studio Display. When they arrive they’ll replace the two LG 4Ks and have them join the Ultrafine 5K in the 3 monitor setup. Thanks for the help!

I have had a LOT of issues. External hard drives seem to completely spin down all the time, despite me setting them to stay running. They also seem to run MUCH slower than on my iMac Pro. I bought the Mac Studio M1 Max with baseline CPU/GPU, 32gig ram, 2tb SSD, and had the issue with the whine. It was still present at 1100 RPM of the fan. I actually brought it to an Apple store, and they told me they could not reproduce the issue and all the hardware was normal and would not do anything about it. I'm guessing the room they tested it in was not as quiet as my home office since it's only audible when there is no other noise. Debating if I should return it and wait another 6-8 weeks in hopes that another new one won't have the same issue...

Thank you for the reviews. Well the excitement of the announcement of MacStudio has waned, and so has my desire to immediatley upgrade my 2017 iMac Pro Intel 10 Core with 64GB of RAM to a new Mac Studio. It didn't help that the Studio Display has similar specs to my current iMac 5k screen. I will wait a bit for the fan and other issues to resolve, and see if anything is announced in June as far as Mac Pro or a 7K external display is concerned. I did order my iMac Pro when they were first announced, but was fortunate there were no major issues with that release. If I do purchase the Studio, I will likely stick to the Max chipset and use the difference for increased RAM and SSD. I do still love my 2017 iMac Pro!

Your second export graph refutes the criticisms of the first (shows the Ultras exporting at much higher speed). My understanding of h.264 is that it doesn't parallelise well whereas h.265 does. Also, exports with adjustments will lean on the CPU/GPU so detract from the 2x theoretical encoder speedup. Why is the M1 Ultra throttling? It's not a thermal issue so why? The GPU winds the clock right down when low occupancy is detected but this is crazy.

Great deep-dive video as usual. Has anyone looked into the CA laws on PC power usage? The less upgradable the PC, the less power it is allowed to use. I think this is restricting the functionality of the Mac Studio. Also, the cable from the PSU to the MB is tiny (from what I saw in tear down videos) likely has to be restricted to the tiny wire doesn’t melt.

I own a Mac Studio display, and while I agree that the webcam sucks (worse than the one in my 2013 iMac), the thing that annoys me the most is the lack of a power button. I originally thought, “who cares about a power button?”, but that was before I realized that I was going to have to occasionally power-cycle the monitor to work around issues like the speakers no longer producing sound. It has only been a few times, but having to reach behind my desk into the rat’s nest of cables back there to unplug the thing is really annoying to me.

I spent £8k on the Mac Pro in Jan 2020 and it was the WORST money I've ever spent on hardware! Just a weedy machine where I often spent much of my time staring at a spinning beach ball (even though I upgraded the GPU). When Apple released the Mac Studio - again to much fanfare, proclamations of top speed/perfromance etc. - I tried contacting them to complain that my Mac Pro is a piece of shit...their response was - "too bad...buy the new product" they couldn't have cared less. Have bought Apple machines as a Video Editor for decades but now thinking I'll never buy their over-priced, underperforming products again! I've now sold the Mac Pro and was considering a Mac Studio Ultra...not now!!!!! Seems to me that they market these machines as something they aren't - gushing about speed/performance that isn't achievable. Time to ditch Apple/Final Cut for Premiere and a Ryzen PC build!!!!! Their customer service is the worst I've experienced from any tech company.

You won’t be able to use Studio Display like a standalone machine. There are few reasons for it. First is the video channel going into the display is directly wired to work with thunderbolt 4 hardware. A13 chips won’t be able to handle the refresh throughput required to drive that 5k. If I were to make educated guess, at most they may have a minimum capability to run the display in a restricted debug mode with a reduced display quality. Don’t expect Apple of all companies to expose that to the users. Second, the wiring of the A13 are specifically made to communicate with the thunderbolt like a USB attached “hub” for speaker, mic and camera. The peripherals works in two modes, a pass through where A13 just appears as a hub that is supplying camera, speaker and mic to the PC/MAC on the other end or a mode where A13 device specific controller is accessible to PC/MAC of which only Mac know how to operate it.

Regarding chapter 6 where he talks about optimising for the M1, where can I see more information about Apple making it easier to optimise for the M2 and future M chips? I feel like Adobe have never optimised After Effects to run at a Macs full potential. My 10core iMac Pro never seems to get pushed hard with After Effects, no matter what I chuck at it, I just have to sit there and wait for it to do ittthing whilst watching the CPUs and GPU idling. When I open Davinci and create the same effects in Fusion all CPUs and GPU are turned up to Max and the effect is done in quarter of the time it took in After Effects. Slowly moving away from Adobe. Just need more time to learn Fusion.

Having iPhone 11 capabilities in what is marketed and sold as a "display" would be redundant, as anyone paying that much for a professional display is presumably hooking it up to a professional computer, but... if all the hardware is there from the SoC to the RAM to the SSD storage, why not? Even if just for novelty purposes, having a 27" iPhone 11 minus touch iOS input would be entertaining at minimum. Also highlights that any modern smart TV is essentially just that: a smart phone minus the touch panel and a smart phone app store.

(If you are still building a list of Mac Studio problems) I was so excited to get my Mac Studio. I've been waiting for an option like this since the 2013 trash can model. But... I have a clear problem. I use 3 monitors and every time I start, restart or wake from sleep, my Mac Studio puts the monitors in a random order. It starts with monitors in a 123 order, but then it is a dice roll each time I use it. The monitors could be 231, 213, 312 or any possible combination. It's a 2-3 minute fix. I have to go into System preferences/Displays and rearrange them each time. And then pull my windows back and forth to have specific screens where I want them. Not a horrible problem, but not one the best (IMO) computer company in the world should have. Apple apparently doesn't know how to fix it yet. After being escalated to highest level, they told me it would be addressed in a future OS update. The first one didn't include my fix. Hoping for the next.

I think the idea of having some sort of browser or interface outside of the Studio Display isn't a great one - primarily because there is no control over the display. How would it know if you were done with your session and to turn off, for example? Does the chip in the display actually have the capability to tap into the ports? The big consideration is if the Studio Display has a wifi antenna. It might not. If it doesn't, then there's really nothing you can do with the chip on its own. But, let's assume for a minute that it's a full board with the proper wifi antenna. IMO, the solution is to, instead of loading up iOS and navigate some interface, start with making tvOS better. tvOS doesn't have the capability for webcams or audio input, but it does have the capability to drive audio, and that's really the only part that differentiates the two. Since tvOS is a fork of iOS anyway, they could really monopolize on this: * Give tvOS the capability to handle incoming video and audio streams. * Produce an Apple webcam dedicated for use with tvOS over Thread or Wifi, so you could make Facetime calls, with Centerstage, on your TV. Families with an AppleTV but, say, Android phones and PCs, now can make Facetime calls with their family. No cables (except for power, unless it can work off a battery) needed. * Bring this revised version of tvOS to the Studio Display. Considering that you're dropping that much on an Apple-only display - one that works with Apple devices, so you likely have another Apple computer - you more than likely also own an iPhone or iPad, which has the remote app built in to the OS. That would be such a simple thing - run tvOS when your mac is disconnected or sleeping. Add a few settings when run on the Studio Display to configure when it would turn on (never, when turned on via the remote, or when no signal is detected), and, bam, you've got a great experience. The only thing that would be troublesome is it's a 5k display, and tvOS supports 4k. Would that mean scaling? Black bars? AppleTV's aren't that expensive, and what you get, by comparison, is basically already built in to the display, aside from the HDMI output (not necessary) and the ethernet port. But maybe, if there isn't a wifi antenna, it could detect an ethernet dongle (if that's possible) and try to connect with it. And, even when running macOS off your Mac Studio or MacBook or whatever, it could continue to act as a Home Hub in the background, as long as it's plugged in. I think it would be a killer proposition for Apple to do this, and, for me, would make this monitor go from an "eh, I've got an Ultrafine, it works well" to "this serves two purposes and makes my life easier."

I hear you mate. I spent £8k on the Mac Pro in Jan 2020 and it was the worst money I've ever spent on hardware! Just a weedy machine where I often spent much of my time staring at a spinning beach ball (even though I upgraded the GPU). When Apple then released the Mac Studio, again to much fanfare, proclamations of top speed/perfromance I tried contacting them to complain that my Mac Pro is a piece of shit...their response was - "too bad...buy the new product". Have bought Apple machines as a Video Editor for decades but now thinking I'll never buy their over-priced, underperforming products again! Seems to me that they don't give a shit about their Pro customers.

I will definitely go for an M-Mac once they have RTX support in the hardware for the GPUs and once they are optimized well enough to make better use of the hardware. Don't get me wrong, the M-Macs are amazing with their efficiency. Still I would value it a lot if they would run the GPU with RTX components and higher Speed but less battery time. But at least I would love to see blender performance like on a mobile RTX 3080 or upcoming 4080 mobile. I would be fine not to get the desktop performance but to be on par with it mobile wise in stuff like Blender, Maya and Octance, well I would throw my money at them. But this takes time and currently I am rendering on windows stuff and just turn on my Mac for little research. But I will be back and hope for Apple to solve all my issues and get HDMI 2.1 into pro machines(another weird cost saving choice). The display is a bummer, it is too expensive, it is overengineered, the A-Chip is useless, they could even think about face unlook or stuff like that. Yes, great speakers, yes, great contrast, yes very sharp and good IPS. For 1,4k with height adjustable stand totally fine. But no real native HDR, no 144 Hz, no dimming zones, no hdmi 2.1 and so on. It is beautiful but beautiful doesn't make the cut if you need "damn good, almost perfect".

I have had the base Mac Studio with 2TB for about 20 days. Four times it has happened that when I have woken up the computer, it gives me message that "your computer was restarted because of a problem" - it states " LLC Bus error from CPU1 FAR=0x5c0183018 LLC_ERR_STS/ADR/INF=0x11000ffc0000 .... continues more such text". And separately three times when computer was woken up, the internet connection was not recognized. On restarting, it recognized internet fine. However, I have not experienced any noise issue or computer not responding when turned on, as mentioned in this video. Any suggestions on what should I do? Should I consider returning the Mac Studio ? I used a 27 inch Imac from Feb 2011 until this Mac Studio, and never once this situation happened with it.

Yes, swap it out for another model and make sure you get Apple care. Usually anytime those issues pop up it’s an issue with your particular machine. Getting it swapped out for another machine almost always solves it. Same thing happened when the m1 minis came out. A percentage has problems like that.
@MarbsMusic

No I haven't had anything like that, if so I would probably return it to Apple. Do you have any thunderbolt drives plugged in or anything besides the monitor? Showing a bus error in an SOC would be very worrisome. The sad thing is to get another in 2TB may take some time. I just got the base because upgrading anything meant I had to wait. I have an M1 Pro MBP with 1TB so I knew 512GB would be pushing it on storage but unless you go with a Thunderbolt enclosure the ports limit the transfer anyway. I picked up a Samsung T7 2TB model, it's no where as fast as the internal drives but for logic it's more than fast enough for now. Plugged into M1 Max Studio I have the Samsung T7, the USB A dongle for a Logitech MX3 (smoother than bluetooth) and a Dell S2721QS monitor then I'm using the new black Apple trackpad and keyboard via bluetooth and some studio monitors into the headphone jack. There have been times my oldest has come home to use the Music / Studio room and unplugged the monitor from the HDMI port on the Mac Studio while leaving everything else on so he could plug into his laptop. Still no crashes as you have described when reconnecting any cables or anything. It could be a software issue but again the idea of a BUS error is problematic since everything is soldered on the same SOC. The last time I saw a similar message was a bad PCI slot on an Asus motherboard back in 2003 that had been in use for a number of years. I just moved the card to another slot but you can't do that on this AND it's a new and expensive machine!

@@MarbsMusic Appreciate your response. Apart from internet ethernet cable, only two other things connected to Mac Studio are (1) AOC 27B1H display via HDMI and (2) Apogee Duet 2 audio interface (USB A) working through Rosetta. The display works fine (wakes up and off promptly). The audio interface works ok too, however the mapping of Apogee controls through my previous IMac was better (eg: I could change sound volume with keyboard keys, and Imac remembered all switches' functions once assigned, which Mac Studio does not when when computer is used next day). I am no expert but unless there is a fault with Mac Studio internally, my hunch is Apogee audio interface might be the culprit or not! I turn on and turn off audio interface 2/3 times daily usually as sometimes I listen audio through Mac Studio speaker. I would hate to return it if the two aforementioned issues in my first post could be addressed somehow by Apple. If the problem is my audio interface, issue may surface again whether it is another Mac Studio or M1 MacBook pro (which I would consider if Mac Studio is returned). The other issue that internet was not recognized by Mac Studio on three occasions after I woke it from sleep is strange too and then it worked after Mac Studio was restarted. Honestly, I would have paid same or even more money for a M1 27" Imac tested integration. Anyhow ..

@@entasis.fifty-four Yeah I understand that perspective. I think it certainly depends if it’s a fun machine or luxury purchase or if it is for work. In my case I would rather have the fastest possible device and deal with the growing pains than shift platforms or have a less capable device. It isn’t Apple honestly, it’s all technology and tech companies. Like the horrible Samsung Display panels or the terrible support lifespan for many android devices, or red ring of death on the old Microsoft Xbox, or the faulty ssd on the newer PlayStation. I can’t think of a single comparison of any company at all that doesn’t have quality control issues at some point. So I don’t think it’s anything Apple can ”get matters right”, I think that’s what buying new technology is. Comes with the territory. A percentage of devices on any mass production line will have flaws, and a larger percentage will not (hopefully). But they recall products from Cars to mobile homes every single day. No product is immune, and technology in general is often far worse because of how precise the engineering has to be. I say swap it out and see if another model is any better? Then just sell or return it if not. No loss either way.

@ghost-user559 2 года назад
@@TechRealityGlasgow Well what I mean is many comments on this channel alone indicate most people have a silent model. As you suggest it is possible that is a subjective measurement if they are used to louder machines, but I think not based upon previous decibel tests I have seen. Similar issues occurred when the m1 came out with various issues among a percentage of people. Just like a percentage of people had screen issues with the original Retina display peeling off, and a percentage of people had faulty butterfly keyboards, and a percentage of cars have faulty brakes or engines, but we still drive. I’m saying if you got that percentage of machines with an issue, that does not mean the overall product line is the issue, it may be your own machine. Generally with these issues in the past, a return for a new model solved all the problems. In a few instances this was not the case (like with the “display gate” issue where it was a matter of time, or the faulty graphics cards in old models of the MacBook Pro). But my point is you will never know if you don’t try, and if it’s as simple as a return and a different machine fixing whatever issues you are having, that is worth the inconvenience. But it does depend whether or not having the machine for your workflow is essential or a luxury. If it’s a luxury that you don’t truly “need” because you have other machines, then I understand being more particular about waiting for a revision. But if it’s something you use regularly, I wouldn’t wait for some distant update which could take over a year to roll out.

One thing that reviewers should be doing to apply the proper context for the webcam is to show what the videos feeds look like coming through the other side of a zoom call. Right now reviewers are just taking the raw feed and uploading to RU-vid, which has much better quality than zoom compression. RU-vidrs are constantly thinking about video from the perspective of how would you look on RU-vid, but that’s not what this is for.
@fmax30000
@fmax30000 2 года назад
This is funny! Why would it be Apple’s fault if Zoom has a $hitty compression algorithm?! They should show the video as is right coming out of the cam. If RU-vid makes it worse then that’s on RU-vid not on Apple just like when a reviewer uses a bad mic to show a set of speakers! If Zoom is bad it’s on Zoom to fix their bad compression. You know these cams are used for a lot more than Zoom! I’m not with Apple approach here but just trying to be fair.

@techinrl9869 2 года назад
I wrote about this problem on another forum and agree with you. Reviewers are not testing the webcam as a webcam. They’re testing it as they would with the main video cameras on an iPhone, which is not what the webcam is for. To properly test a webcam, you have to actually make a web call. Single FaceTime or Zoom calls plus multi-FaceTime/Zoom calls should be made to examine the quality of the picture as the people on the other side of the call see it. Who cares what you look like to yourself? Nobody’s using that camera to take photos for their photo album. If the resulting call looks like garbage compared to other webcams, Apple has some serious fixing to do, as much as they can do with software. If it looks pretty much like every other webcam out there, we need to find something else to complain about.
