DeShawn! When I read the title of this video I thought I was going to get some good scolding, especially because I do believe in the phrase "fake it until you make it". I was able to finally breathe when I realize you were talking about lying about what one can do. I do not believe in lying about your work because yeah it will blow up in your face but I do believe in putting yourself out there with knowledge and no experience so you can actually get the experience. I find that there are some good MUAs out there willing to give you a chance. Thank you and all those makeup artists for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Hi Im a hairstylist in ct and I'm not interested in faking it but I would like to assist someone and learn make up and wig application for show and movie productions,I'm interested and would love to learn the whole process.i would appreciate any recommendation you have to offer me on how I should go about achieving this while being able to still work behind my chair to support myself?please any advice would help.

Very informative! I’m a terrible liar so even if I wanted to I don’t think I could fake it until I make it! BUT quick question...people always say when you’re starting out never say no to a job...how can you do this while still being responsible and not looking like you’re disinterested in more work coming your way?

Amen Girl! I have never liked that phrase, faking it till you make it! Several years ago, I worked with an artist that played a good game of being fake. The more I questioned their work, the more they avoided me. I found myself doing things for them that seasoned artists like myself should know to do, that they didn't know or could deliver, but claimed they could. I do a check off list with any new assistant in testing their skills. I will always respect a person more if they are truthful and upfront in the beginning versus trying to play me. I would rather mentor a future artist, knowing they are a hard, honest worker with a willingness to learn than a liar. It's funny the things you see over 24 years in this industry, lol. Thanks for sharing, but I'm curious to know if the photos that we see of senior Makeup Artist work in magazines or online. Are the photos unfiltered and untouched? I thought they were retouched..

First off I wish my name on here was I AM MAKEUP. To answer your question--Hell Yeah everything is retouched. All of my 100+ editorials are 100 touched in some way. As I say in the video, this is about newbies who use all these filters or photoshop and they CAN"T republicate their own work. Im talking they truly suck in makeup but all their work they present is flawless. I will dare say 99% of senior artist can do everything presented and more that you see. So is our work shopped--yes, but if asked to complete the look in person --on the spot, I can do it ;) Hope that make sense. Thanks so much for leaving a comment! DeShawn

thank you for this video. i am not a makeup artist but was a therapist for 12 years and completely preached this as well. anyone in any field should watch this video and learn from it. hearing fake it til you make it is one of my pet peeves to hear and so glad someone else feels this way as well cause everybody acts like this is the way to be

I have a real concern. I have reported a particular woman to RU-vid. She lies and says she is a makeup artist. And has her channel to that effect and it's illegal mistake in Maryland to say you are and make a farce and have your channel as being one. That's fraud and RU-vid is doing nothing about it. Although it is against their rules and policies and should shut. This woman down and her channel cause it's fake. But they haven't yet.I can't believe RU-vid

I see this all the time, especially when dealing with film and commercial. Assistant has become such a dirty word now and I find that sad. There is a sense of running before you can walk that you are touching on that so many people don't understand.

James they keep trying to run and the "SPLATTT" fall down. I just don't want them to cause those kinds of mistakes "OUCH" I wouldn't want any of us to learn like that special effects girl--woooooooo when I tell you EPIC firing I mean it. You learn a lot of lessons when you see your fellow artist make so many mistakes. Sending you love darling :)

Thanks for this video! I have watched others video about assisting and it can happen that the assistant MUA couldn't even get a credit for a campaign. In this case, how is it possible to get recognition or improving the proper clients lists (with no stealing them from the key MUA of course) without being considered a liar?

No, what she did was she photoshopped work with people of color. She allowed the "finished" photoshopped images/work to be used as a "true" interpretation of what she can do physically when she knew she couldn't do any of it. That right there is "perpetrating a fraud" and a huge HELLLLLL NO! Only show the true work that you can do with your own hands and not something manufactured by someone else. Is assisting the best way to gain experience?

Hi Betty I am biased, clearly I wrote the book on Assisting. For me my career changed dramatically when I assisted. The education was invaluable to me but I can honestly say it does depend on your Key artist. They have to be invested in teaching and as the student we all have to be proactive in learning when they don't'. The other way is to test. Which is getting a team (hair/Styling/Model/Photographer) and build your book/site/portfolio/Insta/experience. That is done over a period of years, and you will have amazing work to show to progress to higher and better test/editorial/print work. All of this Betty really goes hand-in-hand to build a career and for me the best thing I did for my career was assisting. Ms. DeShawn Hatcherrrrr! I'm so delighted that I have found you! I appreciate the advice you have poured forth from your well of knowledge and I have gleaned many valuable pieces of info that has contributed to my career in makeup I have a question for you: I see this trend in makeup and I want to know your opinion....do you agree with the practice of powdering the skin after you moisturize the face, before applying foundation? So it's like moisturize, powder, foundation. What is your opinion regarding this method???

I walked into a law firm asking if they were hiring for reception or because I was out of work and money, so the man came out asking me if I had experience with this position and I said yes and he said send me your resume and then it happens he called me in for an interview and I lied about doing this job so the day of the interview I’m very nervous about him noticing I have no experience so I decided before I walked in that door I needed to be honest with him and tell the truth and guess what I still got the job and he said he really respect that I came forward and so your right that lie would have caught up with me once someone heard the way I would have answered that phone.

Hi Victoria, Boards are reference tool of compilations of photos you use for the shoot. So if you had a shoot on "Coming to America", there may be african clothing, tribal makeup pics and even some stills from the movie on there. The creative crew uses as discussion and to create looks for both H/M. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

Yes I get it ♥️.. There's just one thing though.. Whenever I do a collaboration with a photographer, then he/she usually retouches the images (skin, pores, etc..) and send them back to me.. Would you consider this faking it? We know that every image/campaign we see out there is retouched to some level. What's your opinion about it?

Ahhhhhhhhhh Miss Marta I ask you this one simple question--can you replicate what you get back? Or did the photographer fix the way you apply foundation, eye makeup, etc drastically? If you were to take a picture with your phone-without filters, will it look close to the photo--minus maybe acne clean up, a little skin clean up , or a total color change ( BTW most digital photos must be color corrected) So if you can honestly say HELL YEAH DESHAWN I can do this with no problem, then you're 100% ok. BUTTTT if you look at that photo and it looks nothing like what you did and you can't even fathom how to do it--then go take some lessons and realize you have more work to do when it comes to your work ;)
