How to be a great makeup assistant tips are here! I give you several important rules to being a great makeup artist assistant. I surveyed well over 50 Key artists when writing Assisting Rules! What I found out is, it's not so much the mistakes newbies make on the job, it's the annoyances that newbies bring to the job that can get you fired. You must understand that when you make the Keys day go smoothly--you fabulous people will be thought of in a positive way and asked back. It is those who complain endlessly about the poor choices at lunch, who rather socialize than work, or those who have no respect are normally the kinds of artists that don't make it in this industry

Your voice is so soothing ! I wish you did an audiobook. It would be therapeutical and educational all at the same time 😂😂 During my make-up studies I had to cringe so many times when I had an interesting internship and was sent there with fellow students. Say we were on a movie set with 2 for 5 days. The nerve some aspiring artists have to begin the day by getting in late and then starting to negotiate in the evening whether I can cover them so they can attend someone's birthday. Oh and the personal talks and chatting around... can't even imagine how it has to feel as a key ! I know it annoys the crap out of me when I need to supervise someone. Thanks for taking your time to educate us all ! Always so helpful and inspiring! 😘😘

YES CAROL you do feel my pain lol Yes, this business is filled with people who do not understand how to act on set or with the opportunities of assisting. They blow the chance to get their foot in the door and then will say this industry is hard when a career isn't given to them. It really makes me sad because I truly believe being a makeup artist is the best (didn't say easy) and I would hate for a few mistakes to derail someones career. Also I've started being a trainee at make up department with zero makeup experience. One of the the set etiquette I've learnt is not to ask about make up infront of the talent. I asked about color correction (not appropriate time to ask) as talent will become self conscious. All the way from South Africa

Love the video, it always helps if there is somewhere to find this stuff out. As much as we think this is common sense, that doesn't seem to be in abundance these days and some people have steeper learning curves than others 😜. Thanks again and love the glasses too

Wow these tips are great! I’m an aspiring makeup artist and just started working as a PA for the makeup department for a new show on NBC and also American Idol. I appreciate having a list of what not to do, and some of these are things I have done and never thought would be a problem.

Hey DeShawn! Another great video! Please keep them coming! I'm reading your book but haven't gotten to these parts yet. I cannot believe assistants are behaving in this manner. The things you mention seem like basic common sense, but I guess it's just me.

Thanks for the vedio and advice. You can always learn something new. I never thought to have the assistant unpack my kit! Though I'm not sure I would? When I get to set I go into auto pilot mode. Now you have me thinking!!!

I totally understand--I was the same way, all auto pilot. BUT at times it does come in handy especially when you have an assistant that knows you--you know? Now I make sure I demo how I like it done and the next time my assistants can do it. BUT believe me Rick I totally understand lol Thanks so much for watching.

In my opinion, a lot of the rules that you stated for makeup and hair assistants can also be applied to film and video production assistants or interns. Thank you! This video is educational and inspiring.

A Great video all in all! I just wanted to point out that being a vegetarian or vegan is not a special or ridiculous request as you put it...as a key you should take care of your asistants well being.

Hi Urska If you read Assisting Rules! I mention people wanting specialty meats meals as well. It's all ridiculous when they can literally have meltdowns over food. I always warn my assistants about Lunch and yet they still complain. I care tremendously about all my assistants--good and bad. BUT when I have already told you, that if you have special needs for your diet and you bring nothing with you AND than complain about not having exactly what you want--than yes I find the request absolutely ridiculous. I read a few books for makeup artists but there really isn't all that much information covered with assisting . I've had some work as a MUA but I'm still in the process of learning set etiquette , all the do's and don'ts as a MUA . So I would like to assist for a while until I feel like I'm ready to start being a key . This is such a relief to know that there is a book out there all about assisting . Can I ask you does your book talk about the best way to approach and ask another makeup artist if you can assist them . I ask this because so many artists looking to assist "ALL " say the same thing which is , I love your work and If you ever need an assistant i would love to work with you. I've heard other Mua's tell people if your looking to be hired as an assistant try think of something clever or different to say to stand out or ask to take them to lunch But basically in a nutshell it's the same question your asking another artist which is can I work as an assistant for you. Even if they agreed to lunch , then what ? Some artists might think that's kinda odd or weird to ask them to lunch . I'm sure they know you're still asking the same question at the end of lunch. This is an area where I struggle a bit with trying to come up with something clever or different to say when asking them if I could assist them. For me if I am asking it is because I do like their work and yes of course I would love to see and learn their style and different techniques in all they do while assisting and helping them with whatever it is they need me to do to make their work day run smooth and perfectly so they can focus 100 percent on client they're working on . At the end of the work day that artists work shine and stands out above the rest . And... for me i got to work with an amazing artist and learn a few things along the way for my career as a makeup artist. What different ways could you suggest to ask an artist if you could assist them to not sound like everyone asking the same thing . Also I'm curious as to what gets your personal attention and has you say yes when someone asks you if they could assist you .

Hi Eileen sorry for the delay have been traveling. Yes everything you just asked for is in Assisting Rules and more. It is a comprehensive deep dive into assisting and you will find it beneficial along your journey. What gets me, is seeing potential assistants write me in the way the book says. I do not place anyone on my assisting list who hasn't read Assisting Rules. It is vital to me that they understand the ways of assisting and what to do. Everyone who has ever approached me after reading the book does so in such a professional and informational manner I can only be attracted to that style. No one after reading Assisting Rules has ever dared utter that nasty comment "I want to learn from you lol. So Eileen its all there for you to devour. Great question

I'm a bit confused. What can assistants talk about on set?

Hi Kim great question. Conversation should be -- How can I help you? is there anything you need for me to do? How would you like for me to unpack your kit? Remember you're there to "help". AS I mentioned in Assisting Rules I talk about have a core conversation--the conversation to have before you get to set. You can ask these questions beforehand, and be 100% prepared to work. Assistants should remain as silent as possible--allow the Key to lead. In other words, if they talking about other things (than the job) than you can talk about other things as well. If they are of the quiet type--keeping quiet would be better. Again having that core conversation laid out in the book will help you get through the day a lot easier. Hope this makes sense. Hi, Ciara when I make these videos I generalize a lot because as I say no two keys are the same. What I should have said was, ask permission from your Key before you take a photo of their setup. I have known many Keys who find it a violation and will get very offended Some fear it will wind up on Instagram etc., and it is an invasion of their privacy. I’m interested in what the pay rate usually is for assistants? Is it a flat rate, based on per hour, per person, or a percentage? I know it’s different based on each artist. Anyone willing to share their past experience?

HI ANGELA the highest rate I have seen has been $250 per day for an assistant. That is for the day. Hope this helps
