Making A custom fiberglass seat pan for the XS400 build! In the last video I made an electronics tray and now its time for a seat. This time I chose to make one from fiberglass instead of steel or aluminum. I ended up changing directions from my original idea for the seat and love where its headed now! Enjoy the video and let me know if you have any questions.
Great video showing another seat build. I based mine off of his method.

Nicely done. Fiberglass is a learning curve for sure. I find cloth to be easier to work with, but my experience is with aircraft repair. Full fabrication from glass is something I have yet to dive into. Great lookin part for the project hoss!!

Nice dude, I use FRP quite a lot on my stuff, your imagination is the only limitation 👍🏼 if I can pass on a tip, if you rip the fibreglass rather than cut it, it will flow in to the next layer much nicer and have a more consistent thickness 👍🏼 Also once you finish, I run over it with some 80grit quickly just to take off any spikes that love to find your fingers when you least expect it 🙈 Happy new year dude, all the best Wayne 👍🏼

You are definitely NOT 'an idiot'! I don't know what part of the country you live in and you may not have the access to fiberglass materials that we have here with our large boating community. If possible you should check on the availability of fabmat in your area. This is for building up an area on either side of your center flat bar seat support. I really appreciate your logical approach. I would suggest that you focus more on resin saturation. You are off to a suburb start. In time you will come to understand that fiberglass work has to be done in it's own area especially the grinding and sanding. Keep at it. Be well, Tom.

A plastic spreader along with a trimmed paint brush starting with the unidirectional glass first layer would have helped to lay it down. Styrofoam for backing / support can be fit prior to glassing the scraped out with kitchen fork after. If possible immediately after laying the last resin coat use a vacuum clothing storage bag to draw out the air. Shortly after set up use heat gun at medium heat for final hardening. 👍✌

I love this seat mount idea. I'm about to steal it... after I buy these mounts, of course. Also, do you think you'll need to trim the attachment screws prior to upholstery to prevent them poking you in the butt or will the padding be sufficient to cover them? Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!

Yes the screws will be trimmed. I felt it was obvious so I never addressed it in the video.

I do think people can get a bit down in the weeds with how something is "supposed to" look and not let the bike tell you what it needs. Proportions are definitely important but there must be some freedom in there

Trying something similar today but completely missed the mark on making a frame which looks really nice. I have a fibreglass seat pan (3-4 layers) made that I was thinking of putting rivet nuts in for fasteners. You think it will hold up or you think it will crack on me? Also a bit worried if it would actually hold the seat in place with 4 bolts into fibreglass.
@BrickHouseBuilds
@BrickHouseBuilds 10 месяцев назад
Thats hard to say for sure. Id use your best judgement on that. If you are worried about it and have the ability to make changes before its covered I'd say go for it.

Hi! I have a question completely unrelated to a fiberglass seat ... It's about headsets, or at least that's what we call them on bicycles. You know what I mean. In motorbike restoration videos, I always see the old style loose bearing -balls-in grease being replaced. I don't think I've ever seen the races being replaced. But more to the point, even with 50 year old steel racing bicycles, you can replace a shot old headset with a brand new, 1 inch, sealed bearing headset. It wouldn't be period correct of course, but will work far better. So how about motorbikes, where a headset is much less visible, so period correct shouldn't be a problem. No sealed bearing replacements available?
@BrickHouseBuilds
@BrickHouseBuilds Год назад
Not sealed bearings but taper roller bearings. Very common conversion actually. I do it on pretty much every bike
