Making Oreos At Home | But Better 

We definitely agree with you guys. Not really a competition bc we ended up making something super different. But this isn’t the end of the Oreo saga. ;)

A big part of why yours turned out so different is because of the cocoa powder you used! Oreos are made with Black Cocoa Powder, not regular cocoa powder. Black cocoa powder has been heavily Dutched, so it's darker and less acidic than regular cocoa powder, which effectively also changes the flavor of the cocoa and the cookie. I'd also say put the cookie dough into a fridge overnight to let it firm up!

The desirability of an Oreo has most to do with the quality of how it absorbs the milk when dipped in milk. You never did a milk test! However! That cream could probably work really well in an oatmeal cream pie! PLEASE MAKE AN OATMEAL CREAL PIE!

When you want to prepare homemade snacks or deserts, you unconsciously delve into making your own version of the thing, which is extremely common, but when you are conscious of the aspects that you want to include and those that you want to exclude, then it becomes your crafted and inspired desert. That was exactly shown in your video demonstration; although they do not look like Oreo cookies in terms of shape and crunch, you have made them much more soft and large with a creamy filling, yet the Oreo flavor is still there. This is by far my favorite video, and it has nothing at all to do with Oreos, but it helps show the varying levels of quality in mass produced foods and what we can accomplish by making our own small batches. Compared to the Twix video, its pretty easy to see that if you can make better shortbread, better caramel, and better chocolate coating, then you will obviously wind up with a better Twix, which isn't hard to do because the bar is already so low. But Oreos are already pretty close to perfect (so long as you get the ones with more cream), so what is there to improve? You can't change the taste too much, or the balance between the cookie and cream gets thrown out of whack. Also, if you like a softer cookie, that's fine, but then it really stops being an Oreo, so you can't call it an improvement. I think trying to make it richer and more complex tasting is the best way to improve it, but things like flavor balance and milk dunkability can't be compromised in the process.

He did not made a "but better" version of an Oreo, he just made a totally different cookie that is not recognizable as an Oreo. It does not have similar texture, size or color to Oreo. Its like comparing a car to an SUV, both have four wheels but it's just an unfair comparison.

Oreos are, by British definition, biscuits (they're hard and go soft when stale) but you've made a cookie (which are soft and go hard when stale) which means you've failed the brief Josh. When I was a kid I remember them being delicious, but recently I went back and checked out the ingredient list and sometime in the late 90s early 00s they adjusted the ingredients (took out the lard, added vegetable oil, high fructose corn syrup etc.) personally I think it made them taste different.
