Alot of "criminals" are mentally ill people to varying degrees. Some are redeemmable others aren't. The US tends to fail the people who are through lack of access to mental health programs. That and or funcyionally illiterate. An estimated865% of inmates can't read or read a t a juvenile level. Imagine being a grown man and can't read or write. That's essentially societal condemnation before having the opportunity to even contribute to it.

I can tell she definitely has really good mental health crisis training. I appreciate officers who understand the difference between mental health and an actual threat.

If one county says he is not suspended the other does then it is a clerical error per the DMV. The cops hands are tied so the car must be towed per protocol but a civil tort claim will get your car back, and any damages you suffer. Telling him that would have helped calm him down because it makes sense and is true in some cases

I think the officer was actually controlling the situation pretty well for someone who was so unstable. Had it been a glass break and grab him as a solo officer, you now risk being dragged, ran over or sh0t in the process. I have helped train crisis negotiation and other high-threat medical/tactical training. She did very well in the situation. As soon as another cop pulled up, he was running no matter what she said. She kept him there as long as possible. I think had she forced his hand and tried to remove him it would have become more dangerous. He still would have ran as well.

I dunno man, it's easy to imagine any number of situations where that level of timidity from an officer would lead to lots of loss of life.

@@RunstarHomer I'm not sure about that. It's always better to try to deescalate, rather than start with military mode right away. It genuinely scares people and, most of the time, makes things worse. Obviously, if there's something dangerous going on, I'm not saying to stand there and say everything's gonna be okay, but in situations that start off without violence, it's always best to try and keep it that way. Yelling and physical contact will only escalate the situation -- we've seen this countless times. The type of cops that do that are the reason that more than a third of Americans support a decrease in police funding.

She's awful and she's going to cost people their lives. She's one of the worst cops I've seen.

It took that to quit drinking and now I’m over 7 years sober and have a great job and a 4 year old son. Sentencing more people to prison isn’t gonna fix anything…. How about we try to get all the people that are in on non violent drug offenses out first before complaining about someone getting probation, also a good chunk of our labor done by humans in the US is done by prisoners for an extremely low rate. Nobody would steal if people could get well paying jobs. I’ve been down before and you don’t understand how bad I wanted to steal cause I was disparate for something. Most lady cops don't have the muscle or size to "just handle" the situation. They have to talk the suspect into doing it, or they end up hurt when one resists.

I think that attitudes within departments are moving more towards rehabilitation of offenders rather than simply punishing them. There's still a ways to go. I'd give it another 10-20years.

She was so awesome! This should be the go to training video for deescalation. She was magnificent. She brought his mind back to the reality of the not as bad punishment, brought his mind to college and positive things, controlled and used time to her advantage, worked well with her coworkers and even calmed them down.
