March Was The Worst

March Madness hit differently this year, and not in the way you'd think! With only three books under my belt, it was officially my worst reading month ever - but oh, what a trio it was! Dive into the emotional rollercoaster with Guy Gavriel Kay's A Song for Arbonne, the powerful and inspiring journey of Viola Davis in Finding Me, and the magical rebellion in Simon Jimenez's The Spear Cuts Through Water. Quality trumped quantity this month!
But April is here, and I'm on a mission to redeem myself with an ambitious TBR list that screams. On deck, we have the epic Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson, the mind-twisting Recursion by Blake Crouch, the timeless 1984 by George Orwell, and Ken Liu's fantastical Veiled Throne.

Couldn't agree more on Finding Me, that is one of the best and most impactful memoirs I have personally ever read/listened to. What a woman! Glad you loved Song for Arbonne, I've read most of GGK books and my favorite is Lord of Emperors by far (but start with Sailing to Sarantium). Hopefully SoA lives up to it. Dark-O you absolutely deserve the increase in subs, you'll surpass me in no time, and be nipping at the heels of Mike and Merphy in no time. I loved what you had to say about Viola Davis' story. As you were describing her struggle with colorism, I sat here questioning everything I knew. I'd never once stopped to think about the 'type' of role she was able to win - because all the films I've seen her in, whatever character she plays, becomes the absolute focus of my attention - her talent is so incredibly apparent - It never occurred to me that becoming the insanely amazing character actor she is, was due to *not* being cast in more traditional, central, romanticized roles... mind - blown. I'm ashamed to say it was an aspect of bigotry I didn't even realize existed. I hope you remember us little people when you make it big 😁

I'm late to the commenting game... but if you're in for more historical fiction with a fantasy twist I have to say I've found mostly black authors hitting it out of the part with that lately, though obviously they're not easy reads as they've tended to deal with really heavy racism topics which as fantasy is an escapism isn't everyone's thing. If you haven't gotten to it, "Dread Nation' was a pretty good YA duology about two girls who went to a 'finishing' school after the civil war with a twist. the people who died in Gettysburg didn't stay dead. These ladies fight zombies. Tensions of the time + one being black, one being black but 'passing' with a well off parent rather than scholarship if you will creates an interesting dynamic and approaches to life there. I'm not sure if you mentioned you read "Ring Shout" a novella on a similar vein. And "The Deep" -people who didn't make it across during the slave trade become mermaids. On the slightly less heavy side "The Watchmaker of Filegree Street" was an interesting Victorian era Alt where there is one character with teh ability to see every possibility at once which often looks like knowing the future. ONe series I ADORE that I've been putting off reading the last one of is "Thieftaker" who works 'by day' independently tracking people who have evaded others, hiding the fact that he's able to do magic and see ghosts living in Boston during the American Revolutionary War. Really broad set of characters. "Even Though I Knew It Would End" is a novella set during prohibition about two ladies living and hiding their relationship...oh and one happens to be a magical detective and one more sworn to religion. And the first one may or may not be employed and owe her soul to a demon. Adored it.

WOW!! You have truly made my day! Thank you so much for these wonderful recommendation. I am always looking for new authors of color to read, particularly if they’re addressing heavy topics with a fantastical bent. This is a really great list, and different suggestions than anything I’ve received.

@@KindlesandKicks OH gosh! I'm always worried I go on too much. (hence the 'rambling' part of name) also would note all but Theiftaker is has prominent queer content. theiftaker is also written by a white man however one of the most prominent characters/strongest/most respected is a black elder woman who uses her ambiguous history/origins to her advantage. And the main character was sentenced to work in the Caribbean as a prisoner for several years so was exposed to all the inequalities there. It's one area I wish we heard more about.

@@reflectiverambling1148 You're absolutely right about the historic inequities in the Caribbean not being explored often. That's sounds like a novel that would highly enlightening for me.
