I think this makes sense, Kyle had to account for the risk that Purdy didn't look the same coming back so he needed someone he thought could be a genuine starter. Obviously that isn't what happened, Purdy came back looking better than ever and I'm overjoyed about that.
Also, as we saw last season, anything can happen deep in the playoffs. You really need a good insurance at the backup QB position that can win you a game (or 2).
I took it as Kyle thought it unlikely that Darnold could take the job from Purdy,. It's not happening in practice and he'd have to do something phenomenal (while Brock struggled) in the preseason. Darnold thought he could play better than Purdy, but now he knows better and is being a great teammate.
I think Sam knew he could play better than Trey, so that if Purdy was not healthy he would get to start. I'm not sure he ever really thought he was better than Purdy. But who knows, and really who cares. Old news now.
I'm sure Sam was probably picking Brock's brain, too, lol. One of the top 6 QBs in the league. Sam needs to push for probably his last starting opportunity somewhere. His weaknesses are Brock's strengths.
@@justinsnow1269 Yeah the talking heads are all about giving Darnold another chance. I wouldn't take him. He's a stopgap at best for a new HC or OC trying to run Shanny's system, but don't expect to be over .500.
Really hoping we get our 6th this year. It would be nice for Sam Darnold too. Win a championship and then go compete for a starting role somewhere else or re-sign with us.
My read on this situation is Darnold was looking at this primarily as a development period, with the chance of taking the job a long shot. He almost certainly looked at his career as being on life support and the most likely reason for that, given it’s not seemingly a character or talent issue, is the organizations he’s been part of which is fair. Being a starter on another mid or worse team would likely be the final nail. The whole GEQBUS is funny because well, the name and whole ‘ghosts’ thing… but he appears to be a genuinely humble, hard working guy who had trouble adjusting to NFL speed. I do wish him the best.
Darnolds problem is similar to Trevor Lawrence and Jalen Hurts that once their first read is gone, they are very uncomfortable and very erratic and deer in the headlights.
Darnold probably seen purdy success and thought he was just a system QB and it could be a good situation to revive his own career. I'm sure he knows now that's not the case. Purdy is more than a system QB
Purdy looked better last year than Jimmy G ever did with SF so I'm pretty sure Darnold wasn't counting on beating him out for the starting job. But he sure as hell showed Shanahan what a lousy job he did with drafting Lance :)
I hear you but nah he's the first ever Brock Purdy. The only records montana still holds, that purdy hasn't already met or is on track for, is his most passes in a superbowls without an interception. IF we make it to the big game at this point in his career then he COULD be on track for that as well
Y’all comparing players that played 40 years apart😂😂🤦🏾♂️just stop Joe is the goat of his era Brady of his, I would take Joe over TB12 100 out of 100 times TB12 was protected he would not have been who we know him to be playing in Montanas era mfs need to quit it same w mj/lebron/kobe just enjoy these athletes stop trying to figure who’s best bc it’s a preference at that level
Feels true. We had no idea at that time just how BP would come back from surgury. What I find interesting is how it did work out for Sam Darnold. Although he did not beat out Purdy of course, he was able to get a year in with KS. I can't but help think that did him a world of good. I remember the guy from years past and never thought he was that good, because as you just pointed out, the 'system' he was in was not any good for him. I can see him going somewhere next year and getting back on track. One more thing, the LA game. I was a little dissappoint for him in that he really played with the backups most of the game. Did not really get to see his developement but for some in the first half. Way that goes. So who will be our back up next season? I don't see Wentz wanting that job.
Brad, don't forget that Schlereth, who played for Broncos and still lives in Denver, was the guy who on draft night 2021 tweeted that Rodgers to Denver was a done deal. So for a guy supposedly in the loop/know for the Broncos to be so wrong doesn't give me credence for anything he says about the 49ers.
As someone who has gotten plenty of sourced information that was right and wrong, I understand that just because you got something wrong, doesn't necessarily mean you are not credible. Things change at a rapid rate in the NFL and things like that happen.
Nobody was going to beat out Brock. Kyle said it was possible, but the way he talked about it made it sound like it was basically impossible. The team had already rallied around Brock. Barring his arm being mangled, it was his job and his only.
Lance was always going to be the odd man out. Sam was an insurance policy in case Purdy's arm didn't heal or if he looked to be a one hit wonder. Doesn't take any Schlereth behind the curtain info to figure that out.
Kyle TOLD Sam he was competing, when Kyle was REALLY just covering his bases in case Brock's injury was worse than expected. Nobody thought Sam had a chance vs. A healthy Brock.
Love your takes dude, should have more views and subs. Niner fan since 87, living in Denver now and we all know the denver SF connection. Old dad mike was niners OC in the chargers super bowl for God's sake, including papa McCaffery. Keep it up bro!😊
I would hope regardless of who your starter is, if you are bringing in a 'back up' they should always be good enough to feel like they are always competing to be the starter.
He should've been the best player on the field when it was backups vs backups and he was one of the worst. I'm sorry but Sam isn't even an ok option to be a backup. They need a new option next season
@@worldofheidi23 that’s true and he looks to be an improved player but the fact that people said he’d start for us is just disrespectful to Brock. Because Brock did unforgettable things as a rookie. Sam didn’t. Sam’s been the same kind of knock off QB for his whole career but he looks like he’s a different player now.
I always thought that they brought in Sam Darnold to be the starter. The key is that Kyle and John knew that the locker room had to be okay with it so they couldn't just insert darnolda's number one.
I think Purdy was starting no matter what he looked like in preseason. Sam came to replace Trey because they had to get rid of him because it was too much of a distraction and that wasn’t treys fault. I mean a media distraction Sam never came to compete
It's interesting how despite all his efforts to improve his game and even grilling Purdy on the game plan, Darnold remains mostly a one read QB with a habit of fumbling the ball. He's probably sharp and impressive in practice but not so much in a game. What's also interesting is how far behind Trey Lance must've been to lose the backup QB spot and then get traded to one of the conference's biggest rivals which shows the Niners felt zero threat from him.
Trey was moved for a combination of 2 things. Salary cap and they weren't going to give him the live reps. Trey Lance's worst game has never looked as bad as Sam's lol
When Darnold had remotely decent players with him in that Rams game, he played really well. They moved the ball, they scored points, he made strong accurate throws. He looked less awesome when playing with the backups of backups, which seems like something that would happen to anyone.
Do yall have any idea how much chaos on the locker room if they gave 1 qb to someone else after what brock did on his rookie year. BTW, sam darn old looked ok against an LA team that showed nothing, held back starters etc. Etc - Darnold ain't brock
Darnold actually looked pretty good against the Rams in the first half when he had a decent percentage of starters on offense. Not sure what game you were watching.
I look at Jordan Love and it makes me think, did Kyle give up on Lance too soon? But then Schlereth makes the comment: Lance I don’t think he even dresses up at Dallas
Exactly. Thank you. Darnold is in the position he is right now for that exact reason. Don't know what any of these Goombas are yappin about. Darnold sucks.
@mrdirtslife2688 Is Sam Darnold not a back up? Have you looked up his career stats? The guy has thrown double digit picks in almost every year he's been in the league, besides last year and this year. Here, I did it for you career TD-INT: 61-55. Incredible stat line right?
Makes sense. Kyle never wanted trey and was probably done with him after the bears game. Kyle picked cousins and his best year was with matt ryan so he doesn't seem to value the dual threat like we all thought. Plus he had kap and said no. Bringing in sam cause he didn't even know if purdy would be ready and didn't believe in lance seems very plausible.
@dakotastyles then why did he admit to not knowing how to play him? He got rid of rg3 because he wanted his guy cousins to play. That's why he was still tied to cousins when he got to sf.
Sam is maybe half the QB Brock is at this stage of his career. He’s gonna need to play behind a strong O-line and he could develop into something. I seen Trey Lance get better as the games developed. Sam doesn’t. Lance has greater potential but both guys need coaches that can give them playing time. Glad Sam has only had limited time bcuz our passing protection is cheeks.
what he’s saying about all the plays and schemes darnold had to learn…. …..is what gives me hope that Shanny has OTHER plays and schemes he could pull out of his bag when it comes time to face the ravens again.
Mark has high quality commentary & analysis, quite unique and nothing else out there like it. The host, however looked mostly bored and uninterested while Mark is talking (the guy on the clip with Mark, not Brad of course).
Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure at one point Darnold was announced the starter when Brock’s timetable was a return for December. If Brock wins a Super Bowl after what he’s been through and is consistent enough to go b2b get ready for infinite Brady comparisons
Glad everyone like Sam and everyone is talking him up but I hate to say it but I don’t see the talent on the field and I didn’t even feel like he beat out Trey lance for the backup spot
I slightly disagree with your analysis of what he said. Schlereth said Sam turned down other starting opportunities to come and compete with Trey in case Brock was not healthy at the beginning of the season. I think Kyle and John were very explicit that if Brock was healthy he was the starter, but if he was not, that was the only way Sam could have a chance. I didn't get the impression that he was saying that Sam was ever competing with Brock. But, really it's all irrelevant.
He says Sam would have to beat Brock out in preseason, which is a direct indication of competition. If there wasn't a competition, that would be zero reason to say that.
Darnolds only chance to start was if Brock wasn't ready by week #1. All the media information and 49er team information that has been out since preseason indicates that the only QB competition was for the QB2 spot. It was stated 100s of times by the 49ers team and media that if Brock Purdy is healthy he will be the starter week 1 no matter what! I think the media is trying to blow Sam Darnold up so hopefully another team will pick him up to be QB1 after he becomes a free agent this year.
@@TheSFNiners I heard him say to compete with Trey, but maybe we need a transcript to be sure. I know I listened to the interview before you played it. I guess maybe if Brock didn’t look like himself initially then he may have had a chance. But either way it’s water under the bridge. I am not convinced Trey really had a real chance to compete for QB2 as I think they all though Sam was better, especially given his experience
the guy who was MVP of the league when he was healthy? I love these little digs you guys make. I bet it makes you seethe that Purdy is Christian and Kyle's dad supported le ebil orange man. Kyle probably supports him, too. How does that make you feel?
So Sam darnold needed a year of rehab and knew he’d be looked at differently after spending a year with Kyle and it all came at the expense of trey lance lmao. I know Kyle saw it as an opportunity to remove the distraction out of the room lol
As a player, you're always competing for the starting job. Even now, Ji'ayir Brown is competing for the starting job for next year. They on the roster cause they wanna play and show what they can do in the field. No player in the NFL is competing to be a backup. They're all trying to be a starter.
Panthers fan here. i always liked Darnold. was surprised and happy when the Panthers traded for him, but angry when they didnt draft an OL to protect him. I know Shanahan wanted him, idk why they decided to trade so much to move up for Lance, when it would have cost a lot less to get Darnold away from the JETS. Darnold in 2021, would have beaten out Jimmy G and probably have led the way for the 49ers to win a title.
Purdy was a revelation the moment he took a snap in a game. Then a freak accident, but if his rehab was successful, there was no doubt who the #1QB was gonna be. Lance was a '(we hope) Mahomes' and he wasn't close. From the interview, it sounds like Darnold is gonna be a really good QB coach after time as a QB, but there is no comparison; Purdy's ability to see the field and connect with team-mates is simply beyond belief! Darnold is good and can probably do well and later teach the position; Purdy's teamwork, vision and execution are AMAZING! BA in the opposite corner of the end zone? Sure! Why not? BANG! 9:22 - Shanahan may have seen Darnold as a starting 9er's QB, but he got here one draft-pick too late. 10:18 - Sorry, no 'but, hey'... That's Jimmy G's problem. The game is 4 quarters long; winning 3 of them is like winning the Daytona 499. You lose.
I don't think there was enough difference between the two. What sealed the deal in my mind was the contract salary. Lance had to go with his salary once BP became the starter. And I thought we got extrememly lucky to off load him to Dallas. Cleared a lot of room to sign other players this last year.
This is great competition for Purdy!!…with that Mr. Irrelevant sticker on him and someone coming for his job, this young man is going to be great…he’s got Dawg in him!! Wait cha turn Sam I Am.
I personally think Sam Darnold thought that Brock Purdy was not all that when he signed and even if he was the original timeline for Brock’s return was like week 2 or 3 of the season barring any setbacks. Obviously Purdy healed way faster so Darnold was not given the opportunity to “prove” he was better in actual game time. Darnold playing the entire game against the rams was to make up for the fact that the team promised he would start some games when they signed him
@@dr.deborahbarr4389 I don’t know about promised but it was definitely an incentive that the niners had no healthy qb1 when he signed so there was a strong chance he’d get to play even if it was just for a game. Look at how easily niners qb’s get hurt on top of it
There was no guarantee that Darnold would start any games besides maybe a preseason game. Darnold's only hope was if Purdy wasn't healthy by week 1 he could start.
No shit, that’s obvious, I could see that from a mile away. Then there was a moment where Purdy was on tv, and Sam Darnold was standing in the way, seemingly purposefully. He knows Purdy earned his spot, and Darnold is pissed off that he made the “wrong decision to come to SF”… I don’t trust him, and I think he’s all about himself, not the team.
I don’t understand why you would be surprised. Of course Darnold would be coming in to compete with Purdy and Lance. However, Shanahan probably knew Purdy was the man, but he needed to entice Darnold by promising competition. Look for him to bail out after this year.
Darnold is a good backup. He's not a starter, unless he has to be. I sure hope it doesn't happen in the playoffs but if it does the 49ers will still have a shot at winning the SB
You pointed me to a spot where Mark says that Shanahan told Sam that Sam couldn't beat him in practice cause he's already earned the right to start with what he did last season. Continues to say Sam would have to beat him in preseason. If it was not a competition, that would not have been said so not sure what you are having a hard time understanding about that.
@@TheSFNiners - he literally said "I know, but I can beat those other guys". Your "analysis" following the clip that it was open competition with Brock is completely false and misguided. Every job is open, even Trent William's job if someone became a stud, so don't be obtuse Brad. If Brock "turned into a pumpkin" and his arm was not good to go, then he could have lost the job to Sam just like Russel Wilson came in as a rookie and took the job from the big money free agent Seattle Signed in Matt Flynn. By "Stink" made it clear that Sam knew he was coming to SF not to take Brock's job but to prove he could be #2 and MAYBE be #1 if there was a clear problem with Brock, not that it was an open competition. Stop it. Oh, and I didn't need 10+ minutes to make my point like every video you drop that could really be like 2-3min.
Sam is Jimmy G 2.0. He's not elite. Yes he might be nice guy, team player and professional footballer and has a good attitude. BUT he's not elite, cannot read the field and buckles under pressure
He really wasn't "competing" for the starting job. He was competing for the backup. Kyle said it "Brock would have to melt". Understandbale that Brock was the starter and he would have to lose by not being the same player coming off injury. Also, kind of sounds like they are gassing him up some as he is heading into free agency. This is a marketing job trying to get him a new starting role somewhere else.
Everything related to the famous "QB controversy" in San Francisco, really only existed in the minds of people who podcast, journalists and fans who ignored or pretended to ignore that months before both Lynch and Shanahann had already said "our QB is Brock Purdy" from that moment until the start of the preseason, everything was a media show without meaning... as for people being unsure if Brock Purdy couldn't come back from elbow surgery....please!!! Joe Montana is back from a back injury that doctors say could leave him paralyzed. .. now, with technological advances 36 years later, elbow surgery created doubts... oh come on!!!
I feel so sorry for Trey. He wasn’t supposed to be drafted by us. He should’ve gone to a different team. He definitely would’ve fit perfectly but Brock has done something no one’s ever done before as a rookie. He’s a rare breed.
Trey Lance would have failed no matter where he would have landed, he is not an NFL QB, him coming to the 49ers has nothing to do with him failing as bad as he did.
Lets he honest. He came to be number 1. We didnt know how purdy would be after surgery. the moment they signed him he would not be qb3. He definitely did not beat Lance either. Trey was better in practice and games.but Trey since brock is qb1 qould he a distraction. The only competition was to see if he could be better thanbrock post injury. Which still lines up to this story.
@jaykun182 your comment made me fall out of my chair seriously no other QB for the 49ers has been able to do what Purdy is doing right now just admit that he is extremely talented this must be a joke comment
@davidyadegarians6963 huh? Your comment makes no sense to what I said? I never once said purdy isn't talented or anything against what he has done.lol the video and my comment was talking about the off season and training camp. 1. Purdy just got back from Injury so we had no idea what he'd be. 2. I said there wasn't a real competition, the moment darnold was signed he was coming to fight for qb1 3. I said darnold didn't even beat Lance, he pushed out Lance cause he'd be a distraction and they already told Sam he'd have a chance at qb1 but bare minimum qb 2. So again what of that says purdy isn't good or isn't doing something special? 🤔
I think human performance scouting is a sham industry and no person has ever demonstrated the ability to identify talent beyond basic probability.. Purdy is a perfect example of this. The same group of people who fluke drafted him...made a horrendous trade for Tre...never once saw Brocks value until they were forced to play him. The truth is we all learn together during the real games
All fine and good, except Shanahan specifically said before the season started that Purdy was his No. 1 because Purdy had earned it from his performance from last season. So I don't know where these guys are coming up with this narrative. I suppose if Purdy had muffed it during the preseason, then Darnold might have had a chance, but we all know how that went. Schlereth is okay, but he is not a number broadcaster, and may be just trying to generate some clicks for his name.
Trey wasn't Kyle's choice. Simple as that. Purdy arrived and showed that a) he can play & b) big arm QB isn't needed by Kyle. Also, trey wasn't a 'bro' that Kyle likes
