My 11 year old girl put on some serious makeup today, we are visiting my dad and when he saw it he jokingly said to take it off. She came down and asked me if I think she shouldn't wear makeup like that. I told her that my opinion is completely irrelevant when it comes down to what she wants and what makes her happy, and i accept anything she feels is right for her. I told my dad and he apologized and felt bad that she took him seriously and that he made her feel bad. I'm a bit traditional in some ways and my dad is very much more so, but he understood immediately that he messed up my making her feel any type of way, and my biggest goal is to make sure my kids are happy with who they are and how they are. Nothing matters more then a child's self image and the comfort they have in their own skin, and ultimately your acceptance of that.

It really is on point, and I'm speaking from my own experience here living in a blood red state with a very conservative father and a complacent (at best) mother. That statement sums up traditional conservative parenting in a nutshell. I know I for one would've been spared a lot of heartache and resentment if only my own father had simply loved me for who I am, instead of shaming and ridiculing me for who I'm not. Because I am not him. And I'm not even trans or gay, so I can only imagine what those kids are going through on a daily basis. Now I'm a father of two boys myself, just like my parents, and I'm really trying my best to be the best father I'm capable of being, and to cast out all the behaviors I inevitably inherited from my own father. I know I'm doing better than he was to me, but it's still a daily struggle for me to not resort to those toxic behaviors. Because that's just what I learned from him and I guess I didn't have many other positive role models to show me the right things to do. But I certainly know all the wrong things to do, so I guess that counts for something.

Walsh is definitely severely mentally ill, and should have nothing to do with adults, let alone children. For him it's not just a grift, there is this horrible lingering sense of authenticity to his persona. It's not hard to tell a slick conman from a true believer, if you're not one of the people under their spell. What's most abhorrent about it is that he is given a platform and paid to run his mouth there, offering him sense of validation even beyond his normal Gawd-brain self-delusions. That, more than anything else that Ben Shapiro does makes me sick. Walsh is the type of guy who would push Ben in a vat of boiling acid, if his "religious sensibilities" (aka megalomaniac narcissism) was pointing him in that direction, and he'd be able to get away with it in legal terms. That's what that part of "I would do anything to..." is. Those not so veiled threats about him potentially, some day, exploding with unhinged murderous rage over what is essentially nothing but a bomb he's been building in his own brain over these years. Honestly, he reminds me quite a bit of mass stabber/shooter Elliot Rodger when he was making video after video about how unfair and terrible women are and how they need to be punished by him, how entire world needs to be punished for "rejecting" him.

Yeah, that’s because those trans children (who have likely been having these feelings of gender dysphoria for awhile) have seen other people online (I.e. Well a few things though. Saying you'd rather die than allow something to happen--that is different from saying you will kill yourself when it happens. He's saying he'd be willing to die to prevent it, because he loves his kids and he doesn't want them to be sucked into that culture. You can hate what someone is doing and still love the person doing it. It's what Christians are supposed to do, a lot of them just struggle with it. Rebuke isn't the same as hate. Telling someone what they are doing is wrong can and should come from a place of love. But we as a society have accepted the false premise that if you love and accept someone, then that means you're completely okay with whatever they are doing. That's just not the case.

Whether he inconvenienced my ability to hang out with friends/girls rather than going on a stupidly boring cross country road trip. It was ALWAYS about his interests. (For what it's worth, he has changed quite a bit over the past decade. In a way you rarely see right-wingers do. There is something to be said about that.) And while that certainly was an inconvenience, I'm only comparing the controlling aspect of a parent; not the day-to-day struggles of U.S. trans folks.

@TabiTash, thank you! I am the dad of an amazing 16yo trans daughter. As I have heard others say, and I can echo, the fact that she is trans is aming the least interesting things about her. She is one of the most authentic people I know. She cares about people and is COURAGEOUS in defense of her friends who are trans (and those who aren't). We are currently fighting several anti-trans youth bills where we live. My daughter has spoken out in meetings with state senators and representatives; she has been interviewed multiple times on our local news. She makes me so damn proud every day! My understanding is that such incidents, like the amount of people who regret transitioning, occur in a small percentage of trans folks; I have heard that doctors closely monitor hormone levels and the functioning of the body in other ways on a regular basis, so I would imagine this would militate against the worst side effects happening as a rule.
