Singer Zora Cock about the song: “My Soul’s Demise is a song about love and pain, about being willing to do anything for the one you love, no matter what, even if it means destroying you in the meantime. But sometimes you wonder if that person would do the same for you. It is inspired by the medieval practice of sin-eating, a ritual in which grieving families hired a sin-eater to consume the sins of their loved ones. The sin-eater ate the food left on the deceased's chest. It was believed that the food absorbed the remaining sins of the deceased. The sin eaters were paid next to nothing for their services, and were reviled and viewed as dirty people full of sin. The villagers even avoided looking them in the eyes. I learned about the Sin Eaters when I saw an episode of Outlander that introduced a Sin Eater ritual.” The idea behind sin eaters is basically the same as cannibalism. By eating the other and making it part of your own body, you absorb its properties. In Christianity, bread and wine are symbols of Christ. By symbolically eating Jesus during a church service, one absorbs his purity and erases one's own sins. Here the deceased is symbolically eaten and the sins of the deceased are taken from him into the body of the eater. Religion is strange. Fun facts: the corpse is a former bassist for the band. Through the video, the band took another special farewell to him. The churchgoers are Patreon supporters.

You are the best! I love all of this information. If I ever start a band it’s going to be called Sin Eater (assuming it’s not taken). Thank you for sharing

I was just listening to this song today. Everyone else has explained the video and the lyrics already, and much better than I could, I really want to add how much I enjoy this beautiful guitar solo. I was about to suggest their newest song "Moonflower", dropped just recently, but I agree with the other person who commented Cemetery Skyline.

I will definitely check out Moonflower. Funny, my reaction for Cemetery Skyline was set to drop today, but it got fully blocked. Most of my reactions get non monetized for copyright and I understand that, but I have only had a few get completely blocked. It’s very disappointing because one of the others was a Dark Tranquillity video. I love the band and I really enjoyed the song by Cemetery Skyline, but I can’t help be feel like Michael Stanne doesn’t like me as much as I like him. In reality it’s probably not him, but the folks around him. Either way it stinks to create something that will not be seen.

@@MattsMoshPit1 Aw man, sorry about that. I saw other reactions make it through, I really don't know what the criteria is at this point. Hope you enjoy Moonflower though.

I think the bigger reactors have deals worked out with the labels. One of these days a label might stumble across my channel : )

I am still trying to figure it out. There are some artists that share in the money. Some to where it seems like the label in general claims everything but allows you to still post (this is standard for the majority of my posts). Some release the claim later on. I rarely get full blocks. If I were the label or publisher, I would keep the money but still let the video post because it’s very small but they could make some money for nothing and get more eyes on the music. That’s just my thought. Either way it stinks that I couldn’t post it.

Others have given you the song meaning. It is the 3nd of 5 singles off of the 2nd full album "A Dark Euphony" (Cicada was the 3rd from it). They dropped a new single a couple weeks ago, not on that record, don't know if it will be on any future album, It's called "Moonflower" feat Marjana Semkina. Check out some of the older stuff too. "Until Eternity" from 2015 was my intro to them. And "Snow White and Rose Red" feat Ulli Perhonen, from 2019.

I'm just gonna copy a part of Zora's explanation on the lyrics/video to make you understand the concept a little better: "It’s inspired by the medieval practice of sin-eating, a ritual where mourning families hired a sin eater to consume their loved ones’ sins. The sin eater would eat food left on the dead person’s chest. The food was believed to have absorbed the deceased’s lingering sins. Sin eaters were paid next to nothing for their service, they were reviled, and seen as filthy people, full of sins. Villagers even avoided looking them in the eye." There's also a more personal story that led Zora to write the “No one can even look me in the eye, everybody is flinching away from me as I pass by” part. Her dad was admitted to a psychiatric clinic due to psychosis, he thought he was the devil and it felt like people could feel the evil in him so they would flinch away from him as he walked by. I love this song because it brings together something dark/mysterious from the past with a personal touch. I love her sources of inspiration so much. Totally my vibe. Oh, and the video... it's amazing! The guy who did the video has won an award for it at some Dutch film festival recently. Well deserved!

OMG!!! I love the whole Sin Eater story. Not gonna lie, I feel like I would totally sign up for that gig. I would try and insist on pizza or hamburgers left on the body or maybe a donut.

Beautiful personal and intense song and great video. I love how the vocals and short guitar solo convey the dark mood and intense feelings of the song. It should perhaps be added, according to the record company's accompanying text for the song, that in addition to the band's supporters, Zora Cock's parents can also be seen as extras in the video. I'm looking forward to more songs from Black Briar.

Now you know what the slice of pizza on a dead persons chest is about....probably best leave it. Well, of course it depends on how confident an atheist you are..I guess.

lol, while I am more agnostic rather than atheist, I would eat the sinful pizza. It’s not everyday you get the opportunity to eat pizza off of a dead person. 🤘

Not bad, but I misread Blackbriar and was expecting Blackbraid 😆. A bit disappointed at first when it wasn’t black metal. Have you listened to the first song from Cemetery Skyline? It’s a new band with members from Insomnium, Dark Tranqulity, Amorphis, Dimmu Borgir and The Abbey. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y1PQE6cxXK4.htmlsi=al8X7sQiuiLVyaAA

It’s funny you mention Cemetery Skyline. My reaction for it was supposed to drop today, but it got completely blocked. Most of my videos can’t be monetized for copyright. I am used to that, but this is one of a few that I have encountered to get completely blocked. It makes no sense at all. You would think they would want the publicity.

It happened once before with a Dark Tranquillity video. I am not sure if it’s the label or the band. It’s sad because I love the band and really enjoyed this song. Also I have seen Blackbraid mentioned a lot but have not checked them out. What should I check out by them?
