We drive the Mazda 3 hatchback and see what this small car is like to drive.
The Mazda 3 is one of the most popular small cars on Australian roads, and for good reason. This hatch and sedan make a fine pair, with good looks outside, one of the nicest interiors in a non-luxury small car, and generally polished road manners. But the Mazda 3 has gone unmarked in recent years, which has seen sales figures fall, partially in favour of the new Mazda CX-30 SUV. But is there still a good buy here?
Should you consider the Mazda 3? Or is a Volkswagen Golf, Toyota Corolla or even the new Skoda Scala a safer bet?
In today’s video, John takes a detailed look at the high-spec Mazda 3 G25 Astina hatchback to give you detailed insights about this vehicle.

Really good review mate! Well done! I love all the Aussie ones. They love Mazda and they are fair. The UK journalists are a lot more critical because it's all about the german branded car, and Mazda doesn't get a fair shot! So thank you! :) Top Job! I have the 2L 180ps manual AWD which I don't think you get is Oz but it's fab and I love it tremendously! :)

I think the Mazda 3 is one of the only cars out of a few, i would consider buying. I don't need a giant SUV with big wheels and is expensive to maintain. I just need a car to drive me around from point A to B. Finding a quality small car like a Mazda 3 is getting harder and harder.
@kevinW826
@kevinW826 3 года назад
Exactly this. My only down side is the gas mileage, especially if you get the AWD. They have to fit a smaller gas tank. But my next car I am looking at a Subaru crosstrek as it has a 63 litre tank vs a 46 litre tank. And I deal with the snow so even though I have snow tires, 6” of snow on unplowed roads is twitchy.

Have my G25 Evolve for over a year now. The 2.5 motor is more than adequate, spritely even. Fuel consumption is a big plus, daily commute of 80km mix of highway and urban, gives back 6.3L/100km, really happy with the purchase, wish I had specced up with the Bose though

Great car looking for an updated powertrain. It's basically the same engine & transmission as debuted in 2013. Needs an 8 spd auto, and a 160kw SkyActive X 2.5L engine, and only then this is without doubt the best small car in its class by a mile, and would really make people think twice about spending another $30k on a BMW 320i etc.

The naturally aspirated 2.5 engine is pretty good (I have it in BN Series SP25GT) but I won’t be updating until Mazda Australia releases the 3 with the 2.5 Turbo available in North America. It’s not just the straight line performance I want but the extra quality feel and effortlessness the turbo provides. It’s just that little bit extra that will turn the 3 from being a good car into a great car. Come on Mazda Australia. You know we want it.

MY20 models are plagued with electrical problems. They are presenting with airbag faults which Mazda grounds the car. Takes weeks for parts. People have reported it happening at just 500 kilometres anywhere to 30,000 kilometres. Two owners I know of are in the process of refunds and replacements. The BP has been by far the most problematic with teething issues of a new model since the introduction of the BK. Currently three at work to fix seal issues with doors, battery malfunction, and a replacement of radars on the windscreen. Would not bother.

I bought the 2.5 ltr model, l like it, but there are things l don't like about it that no reviews ever mentioned, l had a 1.5 turbo Focus before this. So what l don't like, The sat nav, poor, spend lot time playing with hand on mouse thing, figuring out where you are, it takes you on some weard routes, not always clear where to turn etc The fiddly tiny buttons for fan, etc Tiny icons for showing if air is coming into or recircerlating, if it going to feet, screen or face etc, these tiny buttons are confusing, and distracting as u try figure out what they are doing I still haven't figured out how heater works in car, confusing Above issues would be solved if a nice little panel was there to push, that was clearly marked Husband is 6' 4, he wishes steering wheel could raise more than it does You need take headrests out in rear seats to fold seats down properly, ok if short, but if driver has their seat back a bit, can't lay rear seat down Interia lights on dash, sat nav, only seem to have 2 settings for brightness, one being not bright enough, other being far too bright Low profile tyres look nice, but over some things like tram tracks, feels like your fillings in teeth could fall out Just thought I'd give an owner's point veiw other than just pointing out the great things about this car

Great review mate, but I must say I just can't warm to this current design of the Mazda 3 hatch. It looks great in the front half but then it just looses it in every way. The rear design is just to curved and low. I currently own a Mazda CX3 with that same style of gearbox and it is seriously temperamental. It sometimes behaves smoothly, but for the most of the time it's jerky, and if it's pushed it tends to have a majorly bad lag, it revs high and barely moves then suddenly speeds off and is totally unpredictable. Quite disappointing as Mazda have always been terrific.

This isn’t a bash on Mazda, but these cars are far from premium cars. Full disclaimer, I actually plan on purchasing a MAZDA3 AWD sedan in a few months so I definitely don’t think it’s a bad car, but... I test drive one and for all the praise journalists give these cars, they’re really just average. For starters, the interior looks nice, but the quality is really only surface deep. Start actually poking around and you quickly realize that the whole car just feels kinda hollow. The rear is cramped, the trunk is tiny, and the lower plastics are very scratchy. A Toyota Corolla doesn’t look nearly as pretty or as upscale as the 3, but in almost every metric the Corolla FEELS like a more substantial vehicle. The Corolla doesn’t creak like the MAZDA3, it doesn’t feel hollow, and even the ride is better thanks to its double-wishbone suspension. Where the Mazda excels is design and the fact that is offers AWD which I prefer. And with the exception of the Corolla, the MAZDA3 still feels better inside than a Civic, Elantra, Forte, and Impreza. And it looks better than all those cars combined. That’s why I plan on buying one. AWD, great design, affordable. But don’t believe the hype, it is NOT a premium car.

That styling is a bit hit and miss. Beautiful front end, but the doors look as if they are dented and that C pillar is just a slab of metal that doesn't gel with the rest of the design. As for the price, they're dreaming.

Guys. Rather than spending all the video time about how good or bad it is, how about talking about how bismall Mazda after sales customer service is? I a sure that will get you more views as there's so much negatives aspects about this side of the brand.

@@chasingcars understood. But reviewing after sales also will get you more views I believe. What good is a car if it starts to show faults after a few years that mazda (or any brand's after sales) does not want to fix? I believe your viewers will love this new side as well and I am sure it will help to improved after sales customer service.

Hi, I have a 2016 mazda top spec which I bought new, please consider your options carefully before buying. Don't rely on looks. I have had a few issues with my mazda 3 that the dealership refused to fix for free in spite of the warranty. Currently there's my tensioner that needs fixing, mazda fixed it for free about a year and a half ago, but the same issue is happening and now they want $800 to fix it. There's also my starter motor that they say is noisy and reccomend that I change at the "low" price of $550. Last year I changed my serpentine belt at mazda for the "cheap" price of $650. I love my mazda and the way they drive and always drive it very conservatively, but for the sake of my pocket, my next car will be a toyota.

Large hatchbacks are rediculous and ungainly looking things. This Mazda must be at least the size of an early 80's Commodore. It's not even stylish anymore. I had a '79 Mazda 323 RWD..........that was a small, attractive hatch! Room for four plus some cases. It was big enough. The Yaris hatch and Mazda 2 hatch prove that small hatches can still be done whilst including the latest safety features.

Robert, you may not have considered that the dynamic assessment of the car happens over a week and not simply on the 20min you see on camera. Pretty hard to talk and drive at ten tenths...
