This video explains the common issue of ghost touch that affects the infotainment system on many Mazda 3 vehicles and shows step-by-step instructions on how to fix it for free.
@@arjitshrivastava5017 if it has the same screen like in the video and it is experiencing ghost touch then it has it. Disconnecting the ribbon like shown in the video or replacing the screen will solve the issue.
Still out here changing lives 3 years later. Been driving me nuts for 3 months now. Additional disassembly was required for the 2017 but still worked. Absolute legend. Thanks for the video!
What was going on with yours? I have a 2017 Mazda 6 and my screen keeps backing out, almost as if my back button is stuck, but it doesn’t appear to be stuck. I’m not sure if doing this will fix my issu
@@501_spyder the ghosting of the display as explained in the video was my main issue. Music skipped, calls made and dropped where the main problems. All fixed now.
It was nerve wrecking to cut the ribbon, but SO THANKFUL it worked!!! The display on my 2017 Mazda 6 looks a little different than yours. There are WAY more screws (~4 big ones & 6 small ones) to disassemble to gain access to the ribbon, plus there isn't a white bar connected to the ribbon. Very glad it worked, and it only cost me $10 for a socket extender to get that first bolt. Thank you to the creator and to everyone who left tips in the comments! :)
I just did this in my 2017 mazda 6, I was getting the crazy ghost touching more n more. Literally had the head unit out in 5 mins, so darn easy. Then disconnecting the ribbon was also simple. While I had it out I used 90% rubbing alcohol and cleaned off the scratchy anti glare coating, now looks shiny n smooth and no more ghost touch. Thanks for sharing this!!! Such a simple fix!! I never use my touch screen either!
Thank you so much for this video. My daughter’s 2016 Mazda CX5 Touring was having all sorts of issues with random button presses. We updated the firmware, did the Car Play upgrade and updated the Nav SD card hoping all that would fix stuff, but while it improved a little, the ghost, as we called it, still persisted. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon your video and some others discussing disabling the touch screen did everything resolve. While the 2016 CX5 Touring has a slightly different looking head unit, it’s still very similar to what you show here. The ribbon is at the bottom of the display and just needs to be unplugged/detached. I’m not a very techie person and found this a do-able project (especially after just having done the Car Play upgrade). Just a little bravery that it will all come back together and your video was all that was needed. A big thank you from my daughter and me for putting this together. All the best!
Man is out here doing the Lord's work! Been dealing with this intermittently for a year and it's just getting worse. Never use the touchscreen anyway, so great way to save some $$. Thank you for taking the time to put this out there!
Absolute legend, worked perfectly. Our Mazda 3 also "ghosted" when driving as well. I thought the control module in the console was the issue, Mazda wanted $1100 for a replacement which would have done nothing, I would then have had to buy a screen. $2000 all up, so many thanks.
Thanks for these instructions. I just finished disconnecting the touchscreen cable- no more ‘ghost’ screen 😊. I’m somewhat of a newbie and your detailed steps made removing the trim straight forward. Thanks again.
I just finished this on my 2017 Mazda3. Big dollar savings. Like yourself, I never used the touchscreen. Your video is perfect in detail and clarity. Many thanks.
Absolute lifesaver, even 14 years later. This process was pretty much identical with the 2018 Mazda 3, just requiring the removal of ones more bracket before accessing the ribbon connection.
Thanks for the post. Tried this on my 2017 CX-5. Was able to do it, but not without a couple of adjustments. In the 2017 CX-5 there is a small plastic piece blocking access to the “ribbon” you have to disconnect. Since it was either make this work or give $800 dollars to dealership for a new unit, we decided to cut off that plastic piece with a dremel tool. Success!! There were also a couple of additional bolts to remove, but those were no big deal. Couldn’t have done it without this video!
Thanks so much for this video. My wife's car just started having this problem (55k miles). What a giant pain. I was able to make this "repair" in about half an hour. Since she never used the touch screen, it hasn't impacted her at all.
Thanks, Radi, for taking the time to post this well-made video. Your instructions worked great for me, and the ghost touch is now solved on my 2015 mazda 3.
Honestly, I actually forgot my 2017 was even a touchscreen and was thinking the problem was in one of the switches lol. Thanks for taking the time to share this
Haha that's how I was too cuz I never use the touchscreen but figured out it had to do with it as it would only happen when the car was stopped or coming to a stop with slow speed
You just saved me $1200, since my warranty expired LAST MONTH. It fixed the problem in a 2018 Mazda 3. I forgot it was a touchscreen anyway, so no loss. THANKS!
Awesome video!! I have a 2018 Mazda CX-5 and my touch screen was driving me insane. The dealership said the only way to fix was to replace at $1,500 for unit (+)labor. Thank you brother!!
Amazing!!!! Just did this to my 2015 Mazda 3 with a ghost touch and it worked great :) just disconnected the ribbon piece that is connected to the white piece where he pointed out. Thank you!! Also the dealership said they “couldn’t disconnect my touch screen” when I asked - clearly they just didn’t want to!
Thank you for the guide! I recently bought a 2015 Mazda 3 and this issue in the bottom right corner. So if you were listening to music at a stop it would skip forwards over and over. I'm like you and never use the touchsceen so this solution was perfect!
My 2015 Mazda 3 just did this for the first time this morning. Freaked me out because I was just listening to some ghost stories right before hand. 🤣 I'll have to give this a go. Thanks!
Thanks, this was a great solution to my problem. My car was not subject to the recall. I never used the touch screen, so this is a great answer to the problem.
This issue drove me insane to the point I smashed my control knobs in, in a fit of rage 😂. Now I have ghosting and broken knobs. Wish I found this video sooner lol
Just did this to my mazda 6 2019, works perfectly. One update to my model year, plastic cover on my unit was covering the ribbon cable, you need to unscrew the remaining screws, tilt the bottom of the cover up and you can see the ribbon cable in the same spot as in the video. Fyi something holds the cover from the top- no need to remove the whole cover just make space to disconnect the ribbon+ plastic sometimes catches on the connectors, so pay attention to that. Thanks for the video!
Thanks! Occasional ghost touches on my 2015's screen have been driving me nuts. Problem got WAY worse yesterday. Found your video and 10 minutes of work later, the problem is gone.
You are the man! Thanks for sharing this info. Like others, I thought my issue was the control knob. I had to go a step further and seperate my screen to get to the ribbon(2016 Mazda3) which was only 4 small screws. I like my car again:)
Thank you so much for this video, my partner and I just fixed my infotainment system on my 2014 Mazda 3 saving hundreds of pounds, I am extremely grateful as it was driving me mad 🤣🥰
Thanks for the instructions! This ghost clicking issue was driving me crazy! (Mazda knew it but refused to recall just extended the warranty to 7 years which mine is denied by dealer, they said the sales had retired blah blah blah just do want to honour it anyway so I DIY...) Just few tips to add to those got the same problem 1. there are 4 more screws on the back and bottom, remove them and with a bit of force you can separate the plastic cover from the display unit. Make the gap wide open 2. use the tiny flat head screwdriver to pull the white part outward, it will release the cable easily 3. be careful when you're loosing and tighten that main screw at 4:43, you don't want to drop it! Trust me! Hope this help.
Thank you so much for posting this. My 2015 Mazda 3 was similarly possessed and your video was very clear. I was able to pull the ribbon cable and no more ghost touches. Only thing I will add: If like me, you managed to drop that bolt down into the abyss of your dashboard and can't retrieve it, the thread size is M6-1.0.
That's good info about the bolt thread. Thank you. I have a video on the way showing how to replace the touchscreen digitizer if you want to regain functionality of the touchscreen.
@@radieyevanov Thanks! To be honest, the only thing I ever found the touch screen useful for was entering addresses, but I haven't used the navigation system in years. I just use google maps or waze on my phone now. With all of the other infotainment functions, I always use the jog wheel anyway. The ghost touch issue was especially annoying for me because I had disabled the motion lockout, so my screen was going crazy all the time, not just when stationary. But I'll certainly check out your repair video when it goes live.
@@davec.4925 I am exactly the same as you! Never used the touchscreen so was easy to disconnect it. But at the time I made the video they didn't sell third party screens so it would have required buying the whole unit to get the touchscreen back. Now a third party screen is very cheap so I figured I'd put out a video about that.
You just saved my sanity. I couldn't figure out why my radio randomly scanned for new stations. I will contact dealership tomorrow to see if I qualify for recall that they extended for 7 years. If not, I will disconnect.
Used this video to guide my fix to my 2017 Mazda 6 ghost touch. It was slightly different on the 6, but worked out well. Thanks for creating and sharing.
@@hamzipamzi the ribbon itself is not white, usually dark bronze. The clip it goes into on mine was white but I'm sure it could be a different color as well. It's the wide flat ribbon at the bottom!
This just saved me so much time and headache on my 2014 Mazda 3. That actuator arm has actually popped out of it's pivot but it reseated no problem and now it works like a charm. Gotta hand it to Mazda for actually putting in effort to make shit easy to work on in these cars. (looking at you American car makers)
Good luck! It's just the bad touchscreens. Not Mazda's fault as they don't actually make the touchscreens but they have learned and switched them out on the newer ones.
Outstanding video! Totally explained and easily solved our issue with the "ghosting." The dealership informed us that we were 5 months past the warrantee and wanted 1,100 dollars for a full replacement. We had no idea this would happen til it did, they didn't care. We performed the fix you demonstrated, now it's completely fixed! You just saved me 1,100 dollars.
Thanks for the instructions, really helped visualize the procedure, took me about half hour. Separating that cable with the back cover still on is a bit ambitious, mine was firmly enough in place that I had to go a step further, taking out 4 more screws to take that cover off. Easy enough. Do you happen to have any idea what an extra connector might be in there for? I found it when I took off the display unit - in addition to the 1+2 I had to disconnect, there was another one, not connected to anything.
Horrible. I missed the so called extended warranty period. Mazda never notified me... Idk how, I have owned the car since 2016. I am on this fox Thank you so much!!
Thank you, just bought a 2014 and it has ghost touch issue right in the bottom center. I have been having to drive around with it on the main home screen so there was nothing to click but this will allow me to be able to actually sit in my music screen and navigation without it going crazy.
thanks a lot, I was wondering how to fix this issue without jacking up my car lol, my infotainment screen cracked along with the front windshield glass while parked in Vermont during a snowstorm. this happened after owning the car for 7 years, just as a reference for other people.
I just did this in my 2014 hatch. What started as a very random single beep (wouldn’t change anything) has grown to completely changing the radio station and activating GPS, disconnecting Bluetooth, etc, so the touch screen had to go. I never touch it anyway 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks for making it easy. Didn’t break anything (although it definitely sounded like it on the way out 😬🫣 👍🏼
Thanks for the video Radi. Polish Mazda dealer Odyssey pretends not to know anything about this issue. I don't believe them. They want money for diagnosis ghost touches. With your video I've fixed it in 30 minutes. I don't care about touch feature, I hadn't used it at all.
They always make it look easy, but because it’s auto repair, there are always complications - like stripped screws, stuck clips, and extra dismantling to do. Thank you though… it took a few days and a couple extra tools I had to buy, but I finally got it done. 😅
Thanks so much for this video! I am in the UK and my Mazda 3 is a 65 plate and this has been happening for months! We assumed it was dust or crumps within the console so we will try this. The amount of times calls have been made 🤦🏼♀️😆 thanks again 👍🏻
@@radieyevanov I also found whenever someone phoned me whilst diving, I could never answer it, the call would be cancelled immediately and there was nothing I could do about it! So frustrating. Don’t know if you or anyone else found this?
Just called Mazda dealer. No luck with warranty for my 2015 Mazda 3 😞. Might ask my brother to perform this for me since I suck at fixing things 😀. Thanks for the video
Im incredibly uncomfortable pulling my dash apart 😢. Ill have to deal for now, but happy a fix exists! Right now, shuffle gets pressed constantly. I'll revisit this if it gets worse.
It's either you pulling it or someone else when the time comes. First time doing anything like this is always nerve racking. Maybe it's just me, but t's satisfying once it's off 🙃😄
Thanks for this. I couldn't get Mazda to honor a late warranty fix even though I had been in and out of service for this type of issue many times. Probably filing a claim with the BBB
You are welcome! If you ever decide you want the functionality of the touchscreen back you can go the extra step and replace the screen for 30 bucks. I have a video on that coming out soon.
Thankfully my 2015 M3 iGT sedan hasn't gotten this ghost issue. It just has an audio problem where the sound on the speakers on the left are low or muffield. Not sure if it's a BOSE Amp issue or the speakers are going bad.
