Hey - thanks for the video. I wanted to add a comment in case others had the same issue as me. I got the old unit out by twisting it without issue. The new unit was very difficult to twist into the spot though. After looking very closely, I could see the little black tabs on a semi-circular rotation were not in line with the blue tabs. I tried forcing them in line to no avail. I then depressed the column/lever all the way and the black tabs then moved into line with some assistance. I could easily position the unit and twist it (about a quarter turn counter clockwise) into place. This video helped me a ton! Thought I’d add this little addendum. Good luck out there. (Mine is a 2009 Mazda 3 hatch)

Great Video. I had the same problem with my CX-5. Quick fix was to open the switch and hose it down with WD-40 worked fine till the new one arrived for replacement. THANKS
To remove the switch rotate it in the bracket then it can slide out of the hole. I found it rather easy to look in the hole under the steering column and use a 16" flat screwdriver in one hand then reach in with the left hand to grab the switch and pop the connector off. Much easier that trying to get 2 hands up under there. Was only $26 at the dealer, to make sure it's a factory genuine part. 2016 CX-5 was # BN7N-66-490A
Big help my friend, thank you! What helped me was to go on back, look at how the switch was positioned, then get out, go on my knees and stick my hand up, feel for it, then turn it clockwise to take it out. To remove the white connector, I used a flathead screwdriver and pressed down on the tab while pulling the connector off. To put the switch back on, I laid on my back again, got the switch back into the hole correctly, then went on my knees, felt for it and turned it counter clockwise to snap it into place.
Duralast Part no: SW8241 (2014 CX5 GT AWD). Changed it in roughly 20 seconds... Tips: 1. Use a flat head to push on the white clip to remove brake/stop light clip/plug. 2. There's 2 small black clips under the blue rounded clips that need to be rotated into the mounting bracket to ensure it is seated property. 3. If you get stuck, you can use a key/pen to poke into the covered hole near your shifter to shift in an emergency. This is done by removing the small cover to the left of your shifter and pushing down on the white plate below.
thanks it worked for my 2011 Mazda 3 but it was a crampped area to work, almost imposible, so i had to wonder how you videoed it at the same time and made it look easy!, anyways thanks for the very helpful video!
Definitely not easy to twist into place. Tip: reposition yourself to get two hands up on it. One hand stabilizes, and the other twists (counter-clockwise)! Great tip. Mechanic quoted my wife $460 for a new solenoid. Would've been a complete waste of money. This was the $20 fix for the win! No mechanic needed (just a little effort in a tight spot following the break pedal up to this blue switch. (2014 Mazda5)
Thanks. This saved me over $100. Just a few tips, have a small flashlight and a tiny screwdriver to help press the release tab on the switch. The space is very cramped. I'm over 6 feet tall and had to contort myself into a pretzel to get under there.
I have a 2012 Mazdaspeed 3 that I'm having brake light problems with. Sometimes there is a delay in them lighting up after I depress the pedal. Im doing this after work today, so hopefully it solves my problem. Thanks for the quick explanation!

The brake light sometimes comes on sometimes it doesn’t when I press the pedal and occasionally the shifter won’t come out of Park. Where do I place the piece of cardboard that you mentioned and how does it help? Thanks!
I will try this and I'm very impressed my problem is my tail lights don't work everything else does my blinkers my brakes my reverse my headlights everything works but the taillights will this fix that issue? I have tried other things but no luck yet..? Please any help...would be amazing....mine is a 2004 mazda 3 ..thank you in ADVANCE!!!!
So I ordered this part and I'm going to attempt to replace it tomorrow. My car is randomly not shifting out of park as well, but the break lights do work. The main issue was the car was not consistently starting right away and then all these lights were popping up on the dashboard (TPMS, Traction control, check engine, and break system monitoring failure) and the dealer wanted $155 to even plug an OBDII reader in to diagnose it. I went to Oreilley Auto parts and they checked it for free and it said the error code was the break switch. So hopefully replacing it will fix the issue. The current one doesn't seem to be loose or anything, so it's probably bad. Any other advice would be much appreciated.
hey man, I'm attempting to follow your instruction but I had a question. I can't seem to get it to turn once it's in there. it turns a little but not completely. it's in there but the two blue tabs that stick down are in the divots and I can't seem to turn it. any suggestions?
thansk for at least showing the mounting holes. It looks the same as 06 Mazda5. this has got to be the worst and tightest spot ever to work on any car. even Toyotas are easier. im trying to get the switch out to give me enough room to loosen the upper right brake pedal nut just so i can reach the blower motor but it looks likes more work than its worth to remove switch in one piece though! For anyone that isn't a contortionist, be sure to unbolt the front seat to slide it back a foot so you can lay on your back on the floor rather than on your head.
This switch was keeping it from shifting out of park? My brake light comes on without pressing the brake but if I lift the pedal so it doesn't touch it so much the light goes off. I figured it was just this brake light switch but this switch will also keep it from shifting out of park?

@@fradista17 get a flash light n mirror and look at it. ur looking for a electric box mounted on the car. it should have a button that retracts when u press it. or when u press break it will press on it. there

@@fradista17 sometimes is just the pedal not pressing on the button. the correct fix is to adjust the length of play on the bolt adjust the nut. but card board makes it work. by making it push. did u test if the box work?
