I've driven an MX5 for just over 3 years. Two of the three I've owned were totaled (not my fault). I sold my crotchrocket because I enjoy walking, now I'm selling my '13 MX5 hardtop GT manual because If I ever get Tboned by a Ford F150 i'm dead. (As a nurse I see wayyy too much that makes the MX5 scare me now. I ordered an Audi TTS)

The NC is much heavier, not as well equipped and uses quite a bit more fuel (which, considering an MX-5 is a potential daily driver, is relevant).

base 1.8L NA is around 2200 lbs. NB, probably 2300. NC, 2500-ish. Not exactly "much heavier," and can be as well equipped as desired...although i prefer my base NC. Also has 170 hp (or did in 2006), which i rather enjoy.

John DeMings For an MX-5, 150 kg is a large difference. The ND can still be equipped better than the NC. The MX-5 NC is a very good car, but the least brilliant MX-5, at least in my opinion.

More reliable? Do you know that ND has HUGE problem with gearboxes, while NA are bulletproof?

***** Nope, this is actually the first I've heard about that. I shall investigate this further before I commit to buying one. I was making a general point though, I wasn't specifically talking about the Mx-5

Mazda has made changes to the gearbox and internals, all cars built after the 5th of Sept 2016 have the new parts.

Mystyler 13 Did the gearbox problems affect the ND at all? From what I've found by searching through online forums, it seems to have been the NC that had the issue. But to be on the safe side, I'll aim for a 66 plate when I come to buy one!

Phantomwhite Hi mate, yes, both the NC and ND had gearbox issues early on. In the case of the ND, it has gone onto its second revision of gearbox components. This revision pretty well replaces about 50% of the internals and includes new second and third gears, among other bits. While there are many, many NDs happily chugging around in the wild without broken 'boxes, which will never break, there are some that have lunched themselves. Most are from owners who track or autocross their machines, but a few have never seen a track and gave up just the same. Those of us in the community are looking for patterns, but there really isn't anything conclusive. I'd say those owners have been unlucky, but getting a post September 5th build should keep you free of heartache. To put it in perspective, remember that all first gen models of the MX-5 have had problems. NA, "short nose crank" issues; NB, CAS, coil packs and bearing failure; NC, gearbox trouble and rod failures, etc. Happy, safe motoring.

for street use, still mx5 is way more funner!

The soft suspension is for when you use the car on ragged B roads. Mazda deliberately did this especially for the USA market.

a mk1 that is in drivable condition in germany, where I live is at least 4000€. nice ones are at least 5-6k if you can find one. cheapest I saw for sale was 3200 but it was a nugget

Thank you- so many commenters are (IMHO) getting this wrong by saying the NA looks bad. One has to bear in mind it's a little roadster and the styling out to reflect that fact. The ND's attempt to look all growly and aggressive is just ridiculous!

People generaly are binary on their approach its a little bit more complicated (IMHO)

I was seeing motor trend today, and discovered that Miatas have a bad fame of being a gay car or not agressive enough to women get "excited" over it i guess that Mazda tried to be more agressive with this one, it just not worked (IMHO)

Marcelo Tezza Right. I think it's largely a cultural thing tied to geography. The classic small roadsters I mentioned (and which the MX-5 was intended to mimic) are all British. In England driving a small car with good handling quickly over back roads is typically a 'bloke thing.' In America, we've got much more open space and more long straight roads, so men are associated with big powerful cars that go fast in a straight line. It's the divide between drag racing and rallying that results in some cars getting seen as more or less 'masculine' in different parts of the world. I'm American, but I've got an uncle who did rallies in an Austin-Healey 100-4, which I think is super cool. Alas, I know guys who're my age who don't like the look of the Austin because they think its proportions make it a 'chick car.'

test drove it yesterday, it's a fast little car the 2 liter, feels much faster than the gt86. honestly, it got just enough horse power, TC kicked in more than once when i drove it.

Well mazda didnt really say anything, it appears so. They just get sheared even by normal street driving. People at 5-15k miles and the numbers are raising. Mazda should bloody recall this.

Yep, the only flaw of the car and it has to be such a dealbreaker... 370Zs are juicy :)

There are always going to be bugs in the beginning of a new generation. They probably won't recall it unless it's a safety hazard, but I'm sure they'll fix it in the subsequent years.

It's consistent with testing! Ture about needing to branch out before hand though.

Its not really an over rated car as they are around 20 years old yet are more fun to drive than most modern sports car

A GTR is overrated as fanboys claim it can destroy many cars. but this isnt everyone knows this wont even stand a Focus but anyone can tell its fun to drive.
