Some 40 years ago, in the Autumn of 1981, Mazda took the wraps off of the MX-81 Concept. Created in collaboration with the hallowed Italian design house Bertone, the MX-81 represented a futuristic vision of a Mazda.
The MX-81 is particularly significant in Mazda's history, as it was the first vehicle to wear the 'MX' prefix. 'MX' broadly means 'Mazda Experimental', and is reserved for Mazda models that fly in the face of convention, pushing industry boundaries and driving about change. It's why our first all-electric vehicle, the MX-30, was christened with this nomenclature.
In the case of the MX-81, after its reveal at the Tokyo motorshow in 1981, the car remained in various states of storage. Many years later, in 2019, Mazda Italy took it upon themselves to work with Mazda Corporation in Japan to set about restoring it to concours. The process was completed just in time for the 2020, Mazda 100th anniversary.
This film, entitled 'The Shape of Time', documents that painstaking process.
