I started last year and what i've learned is that all the rank up "shortcuts" come from getting better at positioning. There is so much stuff you can implement after a few games and see results immediately like back post rotation, using pads over big boost (you save/score more), don't overcommitting as last man (you get less scored on), trusting in mates (stops double comitting) and more. The only "Shortcuts" you can get for Mechanics is that you learn it the right way from the beginning, by watching a good video about it and doing it step by step. It still needs a lot of time to be able to do it consistently, especially in games. Really good Video, thanks Wayton.

@@redfox9726 Yeah there are a lot of small examples of common situations like that were you can learn an easy solution to deal with it. Conceding a goal because your teammate didn't save the ball sucks, but if you positioned yourself to follow up after his save, you did the right play and that matters way more in the long run because you can't control what your teammates do. But you can try to improve and make the correct play. For the speedflip: it starts to get famous and used in diamond and i often see champ player that dont even flip on kickoff. Its frustrating. I think Kickoff is slightly underrated while aerial mechanics are overrated
@MinecraftTestSquad
@MinecraftTestSquad 2 года назад
One big thing about a speedflip though: it's easily countered if you read it, and most people make it extremely easy to read. I've noticed that people don't tend to adapt their kickoff much in my rank (D3) and I've developed a kickoff (probably not the first to come up with it) that completely destroys a speed kickoff quite consistently. Most of the time, they'll keep doing it and get even 50s or completely dunked at kickoff. The only issue is I have to see it coming, because otherwise my kickoff really isn't all that good and I risk losing it. I read a speed kickoff by watching the nameplate of my opponent. If it does some weird curly crap, I know they speedflipped (or attempted to do so).
@miqc1108
@miqc1108 2 года назад
@@MinecraftTestSquad yeah, you can do the speedflip as well with precise aimed flips like flipping in the direction the ball is going and afterwards you are closer to the ball than the opponent. Or the safest variant to just do a front flip and be as goalside as possible. The way when your opponent tries to hit it around you is very easy to counter, but of course you need a faster kickoff than a kickoff the speedflip beats. You can't just drive straight at it.

As a GC2 I learned most of my mechanics in low diamond and just kept practicing them. I have really good mechanics but for a very long time my positioning and game sense held me back. I'm glad I worked hard on my mechanics because it's a super nice skill to have and some of the shots u hit are amazing but it does take a bit longer to push those ranks. So basically if ranking up is your goal work on gamesense but don't feel any shame for trying to learn advanced mechanics early. But it does take time, don't ask people to help you just grind it out and keep practicing. Give it time.
@danilio8
@danilio8 2 года назад
I never bothered to grind mechanics since I don't play the game a lot. My friends said I should be better at positioning, and I listened to them. They told me my mistakes, how I should rotate etc. Soon after, we were winning most of our matches by purely playing solid positioning. Managed to reach Champ 3 and then stopped playing again. Wayton's video's are making me reconsider whether or not I should grind out mechanics and play RL again🤔
@bawlzack7877
@bawlzack7877 2 года назад
@@danilio8 Firstly, well done in reaching C3. Although I respect Mr Pilkin's opinion and he makes some very compelling points, mechanics are still important for progressing to the higher GC and SSL ranks. If you are happy with where you are in your progression and you don't care about your rank, then all the more power to you. However if you want to progress higher, you need to start focusing on mechanics. At the higher ranks everyone is pretty good at decision making already. That's simply because that's the easiest thing to get better at and they have all put in lots of hours. Decision making alone won't help you there because you will be way too easy to read, and you will get outplayed by more mechanical players. And lastly, you should most definitely play RL again!
@GaryWalter
@GaryWalter 2 года назад
Every sport I've coached, hockey, soccer, baseball... I've had my players focus on position and being a team player. We work on skills during practices, but my focus - for long term success - is to teach position, thinking ahead, and cooperating with the rest of the team. It's always worked well. Except when you get a naturally talented player who can score at will - or outplay anyone. BTW, it's no fun to play with these people. (Back to RL) When I'm matched with a player who is gifted in their mechanics and can outplay the other team's ability to make saves, I'm left with three options: a) compete with my teammate for the MVP position, b) continue to be a good teammate and pick up the defensive roles (even the ones that don't make points), c) leave the game. Either way, it's really no fun playing with a teammate who is so focused on their own mechanics and goals that they ignore their teammates. IOW, I agree with @Wayton
@soundinc876
@soundinc876 2 года назад
Hey! Great video and very informative. I believe in rotation way more than mechanics, but rotations depend so much on how good you are at reading the ball, your teammate's position, and the other teams skill and consistency. It's not exactly easy to fix just by being aware that it's there.

I began thinking about rotations and positioning nearly 2 years when I watched a Sunless video about it. Rotations and positioning really DO matter, and it works wonderfully as long as the whole team knows how to rotate and where to be positioned on the field. That actually got me to rank up more quickly and got more wins. And like Wayton said. Sure, your mechanics may be bad, but knowing positioning and rotations is VERY effective and will help you rank up faster. It honestly works wonders! I'm glad you made this video Wayton. A LOT of people really need to understand that it's not all about mechanics👍🏻

You imply all Rocket League skills fall either in the mechanics side of things or the positional side, but I would argue you're missing a category of skills and it's also incredibly underrated. I would categorize RL skills under 1) mechanics 2) decision making and 3) reads. Reads (of your team mates, opponents, and the ball) give you the information to work with, decision making is the process that turns this information into a plan and mechanics is what you use to execute that plan. If you can't read the play accurately and quickly, all the decision making in the world isn't going to help you the tiniest bit, because your plan will be based on incorrect assumptions about where the game is going. Positional tricks like back post rotations are a way to mitigate poor reads because they let you make plans that are mostly go in situations that are easy to identify. Generally, rotating back post is going to be a good idea in c1 or lower game and your ability to read the play is unlikely to be good enough that you should do something different based on your assessment of the situation. Typing it out like this I guess I realize that things like posturing for your team mates and faking are a bit weird. They mostly fall under decision making but the they rely heavily on your knowledge of reads. Not only do you need to be good at reads, you need to be consciously aware of it and know how you can influence the reads of other players on the field. You also need to know about their decision making because you also need to know how those reads will affect their decision making.

This is really true; a hard and fast rotational rule won't be much good if you just can't really see what's going on in the game. I've always thought that 95% of this game is about perception. And when you perceive/read things well, that ALSO helps immensely with your mechanics. You can't air dribble if you can't perceive exactly what your car position relative to the spot on the ball you touch and the angle of the camera will do to its trajectory.

I'm in low champ. I spent the last 3 months straight learning flip reset and double flip reset and i have them down pretty easy and was pushing for the triple flip reset, + many other mechanics. I did not play any comp at all, but competed in champ tournaments nearly every day and was unable to win a single one. That whole damn time. I was getting so frustrated because I can do all these shots a lot of people my rank can't, but I had deteriorated so badly in in-game skill in basically every way and it just got worse and worse. So, recently, i gave up mechanic training entirely and swapped every second of my rocket league time to purely focusing on shot accuracy, power, speed and competitive matches to just re-learn and re-experience myself. I won a champ tourney 3 days ago after less than 2 weeks. Do your fundamentals people, if ranking up or winning games is your objective. Although these were not my objective while i was having fun training mechanics (it's ridiculously addictive to me), i did not have a clue as to just how bad it was making me at the actual game. I might have ranked up to GC if i had spent the last 3 months doing this instead of fancy shots no one lets me set up in-game anyway.

Great video! I'm a rocket league OG (started playing August of 2015) and fully agree with this video. My mechanics are actually well under my rank but I get by pretty easily by knowing how to defend those things that people tend to know how to do at my level, keeping track of where everyone else is on the field, and being solid on all the fundamentals. IMO people practice newer tricks too much compared to trying to be consistent. It's pretty funny to me when someone hits a ceiling shot flip reset against me, then we win when they whiff a couple defensive backboard reads or botch a few clears.

I don"t want to flex or something like that but because of it (mechanics) people think i m higher ranked than i am in reality . Tip for every single plat- player. For me if u re person which doesnt get rl serious enjoy, u can do what u want. I left platinum for over 2 month and i am still shocked, how often players on diamond ballchase and doublecommit all the time without playin rotation or a well learned defense awareness. You are so rite Wayton. well said! Feels like most of the player on diamond just have offense skills and are not interested in defense. For me it mostly ends in games, where i completely stay back and catch up the next attack. Emberassing most times...

This was motivating. I'm in a slump atm I had so many long very bad playing sessions where my mechanics and game sense were so bad that I haven't picked up rocket league in almost 2 weeks, that's coming from an everyday player. Im high diamond breaking into champ and I felt I needed to work on my mechanics to get better and these next level mechanics just aren't clicking for me. I've been practicing air roll for the last 10 months and I can not get it down. I felt I peaked and was kinda done. Maybe I'll pick it up again. Thanks for this video.

This video truly is an eye opener, although I know that in my case Rocket League is not about ranking up. I try to have as much fun as possible and there is nothing more exciting than pulling off a mechanic you've been trying to learn for days. (a bit salty seeing you reach c1 on a keyboard when I finally hit gc after 600 hours or so)

I’ve been D3-C1 for several seasons. Nobody is hitting flip resets. Most players can hit an aerial, but You might see a true air dribble once every ten games. Back post is the most important thing Diamond players need to learn. Most goals aren’t from an amazing offensive play. It’s from a breakdown in rotations.

When I was a plat 1 player I always thought that I needed to work on mechanics and the first one I started practicing is power shots and yes it did help me get to plat 2 I still sucked and then once I found a video all about positioning and rotations, that all changed and then I became diamond 2 in 2s and diamond 1 in 3s, I was actually impressed at how good it feels to make a play off of simple rotations and constant pressure you can apply in 3s and I won my first tournament that season too! Waytons video on rotations and positioning is definitely a video you should watch if you haven't

When I began playing RL with my friends we were initially ranked at Gold 2-3. I shared with them a video on backpost rotations, and within a few weeks we were sitting at about Plat 2. We can barely aerial to save ourselves, none of us can speedflip, I'm the only one who even tries to hit the ball off the wall, we probably wiff like half our challenges. But we rotate. Backpost. It's that easy.

the thing about doing the mechanical wizardry when its actually consistent is it gives an imeadiate push instant pressure for the opponent and your team can relax. thats by far the biggest advantage of higher level mechanics vs positioning but you need good positioning to reliably get the setups needed. for example up at gc hoops a straight up powershot is not what gives you a goal, it will get defended as long as there is a defender. but a pop up air dribble with high level of control can do so much more. dont sleep on mechanics, but also dont force learn them too quickly

I'm C2/C3 and can't consistently air dribble or ceiling shot yet. I haven't even touched flip resets. I see others try them often but it very rarely works even at that level. As others have proven, you don't need any fancy mechanics to rank up.

Ok so I played rank for the first time today, only stuck to casual for a while, I can only semi consistently do an aerial about the height of the goal and almost never go for anything higher. ended up in diamond 2 div 3. I expected to be mid plat max, did not expect to hold my own in diamond lobbies where people can get up way faster than I can and go for balls I would never attempt to go for. Side note, it is so nice to have team mates who actually rotate back instead of both being in the same corner on the enemy side.

I'm Champ 1 and can usually air dribble fairly consistently now. I've put a lot of time in free play to do so. But I never even worried about trying to learn it until I got in champ because I was always more concerned with rotation and being consistent enough to not whiff on saves or crucial 50/50's.

Can confirm - I've been constantly hitting GC rank since 2016/17. And I still have not scored a single flip reset nor ceiling shot in a ranked match, neither prob could I if I tried. Point being that most of the fancy mechancis is by no way needed to reach the higher ranks in RL. I only play like 30 something hours pr season and you get GC way before the rewards matches are done. Positioning and teamplay beats that spinning flip resetting guy every match :)

Idk, i feel like speed flips is something you could learn a lot earlier on. I started speed flipping in gold, I didn’t really get it down until i was in plat (which didn’t take too long). The speed flip obviously wasn’t perfect for me yet but starting in gold gave me time to get decent at it by the time i hit plat and it’s help do a lot for me at such a low rank. Having a stronger and faster kickoff really helped me. I might’ve not been doing it completely right like maybe 40% of the time but i was mostly consistent with the flip and able to boost all the way through it with a clean land which is faster than a just ‘boost at the ball’ kickoff either way. But now I’m in diamond and I’m pretty sure i got it down for the most part.

I remember one day when I thought I was really good at rocket league, I was low plat and never really watched rocket league videos or RU-vidrs etc, until one day I watched a squishy video on RU-vid where he was explaining how the game should really be played and things like that can’t really remember any details but basically I realised I was terrible like really bad and I started really focusing on rotations and decision making and things like that and within 4 months jumped from low plat to champ 2 which also isn’t great but it’s better than a whole lot of people like how I used to be morale of the story is when you become self aware and try to work on what you’re doing wrong you can fix the problem.

I'm a player that values positioning VERY highly perhaps even to a fault. I've hit 2 actual air dribbles in the 6 years I've played this game, I've never hit a flip reset or even tried, and I've never hit a ceiling shot. Now all of this being said, I recently got into champion 1. This was all because of my positioning and only a fundamental understanding of the mechanics. Positioning will win you almost every single game if your opponents make mistakes. Only at levels where your opponents don't make positioning mistakes and have a perfect defense do you need to learn all the fancy stuff to outplay them.

I know i might be a lil bit late for the answer, but i still want to share my experience with rocket league. I started back in 2021 early-summer, and reached champ1 in 120h in-game. I just watched Lethamyr's series about ranking up in 2s and 3s, and absorbed information like a sponge. The only thing i learned by the time was basic straight aerials, and speed-flips. Because they seemed to be easy to do in KBM. Now i have smth about 500h total in different accounts, and im still champ1(div4 in peak). I noticed, that somewhere in d3-c1 you begin to experience difficulties in the game due to lack of mechanics. So now i am training my air-dribble and ceiling shots. I can do them, and i learn them really fast, because i have a basic understanding of how the car works, but i still do them inconsistently due to lack of practice. The point of my comment is -- i was champ with 100h in game without mechanics And i still have champ with mechanics and 500h. You can easily get to GC2-3, even SSL(youtube videos, hi) without mechanics. It's just that it will be quite difficult, and the reasonable rank to start training your mechanics is around d2-d3-c1

The only "mechanic" I would recommend to a plat or diamond players is to get comfortable jumping off the wall and air rolling to direct your car. The entire reason being that this opens up more field that a player can comfortably hit the ball from, improving offensive and defensive plays

I started watching this video with skepticism. Currently I'm Plat 1. Practically scared to play competitive matches because I think I'm technically inferior to the others and I will make them loose. Mostly doing aerial shot practice. So i said fuck it. let's try. I started applying rotation, waiting on 2nd post, did saves i would have never done when i waited in the middle. Also changed my position in attack a little far back, i did some aerial goals (the only aerial in the matches), no crazy spins just getting it inside the goal. I won 9 of 8 matches and fucking ranked up.....this is sorcery.

Thank you so much for this video. Being a C1 player with ZERO advanced mechanics (I rarely even attempt air dribbles), this one really speaks to me. Especially the line about players usually not even being aware of how bad their positioning is. I'll have teammates who hit 1 in 20 mechanical moves, both go flopping up in the air to the other end of the field, accomplish nothing... then blame me while I'm left defending a 1v2 or 1v3. Cherry on top if it's a party of two who are going to go agree with each other in their echo chamber, haha. I'm just completely fascinated by the amount of mental gymnastics players go through to deflect any responsibility from themselves.

imho I'd even say you don't really need any advanced mechanics until high GC2 - low GC3 since that's about the threshold where people become quite consistent with their mechanics. The thing you actually need is an understanding of what the opponent's options are if they go for an advanced mechanic. Positioning and the basic mechanics (powershots, accuracy, ball control, car control to an extent) are way more important to learn and get the hang of.

One argument I do have with speed flips is in plat I lose so often to players who can consistently speed flip kick off but is there a positional solution to kick off other than fake kick off maybe really hard mechanics that aren't as useful I will agree with as some people take it to an extreme which tends to be really annoying especially when you have friends who have poured thousands of hours into a fairly useless mechanics but then ask questions like "how come you can't air dribble yet?" And annoying stuff like that

Great video Wayton. But you forgot some important aspects. 1. When you fail, dont get angry. LEARN. Watch what you messed up and why you chose to do that specific action. Learning from your own mistakes should get you at least plat. 2. Not being able to hit the ball IS a big deal, but not as big as positioning. I do warmup matches against the easiest bots just to reset my brain to feel the car control. and last: learn ground play before even considering taking it to the skies. Have a strong foundation to build on. btw, i use a nacon compact wired controller. This controller has bigger buttons closer to each other which makes fast aerials easier. Its like fatfingering a blackberry keyboard. XD. Love your vids bro, made me a better rocketeer

I cannot air dribble, flip reset, musty, breezi, double tap, speed flip. I'd only say I comfortably know how to half flip and somewhat-fast aerial. I was able to get up to C1 in 3s. Many of my diamond games were about recognizing when people could do this stuff, and most of the time all it required was for me to fly straight up and I'd block them. Your mechanics won't save you if you don't have the sense to understand when you should use them.

overnight, i went from low 1600 to 1750 at the start of the season in 3s (top 250) and i was facing mostly 1900+ players (their last season rank) you can't get mechanics up that fast overnight. i also was genuinely enjoying the game, so it helped when i lost to bounce back. but, positioning can improve overnight, but it can also go down to shit overnight as well. if you're genuinely happy and positive while playing the game ( being happy and healthy outside of rocket league helps) then you will play better, at the very least you'll feel better.at low ranks it means you have lots of room to grow, at high ranks it means youve surpassed most already, celebrate it.

I got GC1 in 3s by solo queueing, so it definitely can be done.

It might be helpful to post some of those videos. I can say pretty strongly that game sense of a SSL/GC is going to be so much stronger than the game sense of a Plat/Diamond. I’m a player that focuses about 20% on mechanics and 80% on game sense(positioning/decision making). The 20% is mainly focused on ball control on the ground(simple dribbles & powershots). I haven’t checked you’re videos but it might make a good video to find folks at various levels who are trying to be focused on the right things but are still making big mistakes. Of course, there is such a thing as basic natural talent. This talent doesn’t guarantee your level but strongly influences it with other variables such as work ethic. Either way, thanks for the video. Helpful as always. :)
