47 years ago today was a very important date in punk rock history. The Ramones and Blondie started a 5-night engagement at the Whisky aGoGo on the Sunset Strip. This really kick-started the punk rock movement in L.A., as well as across America.
I went to one of these shows and this is when I met Malcolm McLaren for the first time. I talked to him twice at the show and I think you'll find our conversations interesting and entertaining.
Whether you like Malcolm McLaren or not, I think you'll find this video engaging. It's a snapshot back in time when punk rock was just starting to catch fire in America through the eyes of a very enthusiastic fan.
Enjoy!

Hi Maggie. Came across your vlog a few months ago about following the pistols around. Found it interesting and informative coming from someone who was truly drawn to the punk scene. Im 60 from Detroit and was into the Stooges, and what some claim the Godfathers of punk(MC5). Not sure if you know of MC5, if not i think you would find them ineresring. Fred Smith (fred sonic smith) rhythm guitar was married to Patti Smith. They meet at the Grande ballroom in Detroit where big acts would play in the late 60s early 70's. Another cool vlog, thank you for giving people who remember that time your vision of it.

I think Malcolm first noticed Johnny on the King’s Road by the way he wandered around wearing the famous t-shirt in which he scrawled “I hate” above the band name Pink Floyd. Rotten certainly didn’t answer an ad in Melody Maker and even resisted efforts to have him front the band - until he realized he was a natural fit. Enjoyed your post. I believe the best early 1977 scenes in the states were in New York, of course, and San Francisco, which had gotten the drift very early and had a thriving thing going with clubs, lots of bands, and a shop - Aquarius Records - devoted to English punk imports while LA was pretty much a ghost town.
@WhyNotGoPlaces
@WhyNotGoPlaces 4 месяца назад
I remember San Francisco being very hip to punk at the time. I do know Johnny didn't answer any ads, maybe I didn't make that clear in the video. Sorry for that! I think Malcolm and Bernie Rhodes liked the way he looked walking up and down the Kings Road. Thanks for watching and subscribing! The L.A. scene didn't get going until Summer 1977 and even then most of the bands were poor copies of other bands in NYC and London, in my opinion anyway. I did like X and The Screamers though.

Yes the first time I say them was around April 1977 at the Starwood in Hollywood. They were the first English punk band to make it to L.A. Maybe I'll do a video on that. We interviewed them for our fanzine at a member of the Screamers' house (punk band). All of them were there with Jake Riviera. They were all very nice. Captain pulled up my long shirt to check out my rear! Dave was shy as I remember. I loved them and pogoed like crazy during the show. I have seen them over the years and always enjoyed them, especially the original line-up. Thanks again for watching and subscribing!

Just discovered your channel...I have loved the Sex Pistols forever...Been looking for more of the footage that you have in your videos. I'm going to like every video that you have made (even the ones I didn't watch yet lol) and subscribe as soon as I stop writing this comment. Fantastic job!!! You are dead right about the recent series not being much kop. The guy who played Malcolm was the best thing in it, but it failed in capturing Steve's book accurately. The book is totally honest about the facts and much as I love Rotten, he doesn't tell the WHOLE truth in his two autobiographies whereas Steve does. Steve even admits in his book that he can't handle being in a room with Johnny because he always has a stage persona switched on, and he just wants to talk with the normal John Lydon not the media star "Johnny Rotten." Even Glenn Matlock said that Johnny changed for the worse as soon as he got famous, so if you only read one book, read Steve's ("LONELY BOY") because he tells you the things that you wanna know. Then read Johnny's first book ("NO DOGS NO BLACKS NO IRISH") because it is a very good read and also hilariously funny...I was visiting my brother in London a while ago and we went to the SEX shop on the Kings Road. If you are trying to find it, it's the one at the very end of the block and it has a big clock in the window and it says THE WORLD'S END above that...I love your channel because you obviously love the band. Have you ever been to London??? I'm English. I live in Liverpool at the moment, but you can be in London in 2 hours and 20 minutes by train these days from here. Come to England, Maggie, and you can stay at my house and I will take you to London and give you a grand tour. I'm not joking lol You are most welcome to come and stay here in the U.K...I can tell just by watching and listening to your videos that you're ultra cool and not likely to mug me lol I'm a total geek about the pistols, I've read all of the books and know all the main spots in London. I've been a punk since I was 5 years old and I first heard the Pistols. I am still a punk now, I will be a punk forever. I'm so glad that I found your channel. THANK YOU! NO FUTURE lol xxx

Love your stories, thanks! I've heard something interesting about the Ramones/Blondie show - or read, rather, somewhere or other. I read that Johnny Ramone chased Malcolm out of the dressing room at this show, swinging his guitar at him and screaming 'Get Out!' I wonder if Malcolm had just delivered him the bad news - 'there's a young girl out front, and she just doesn't find you guys at all sexy ...' Who knows? It's fascinating that Malcolm was constantly doing impromptu market research, checking out the fan's opinions ... Personally, I think he was brilliant, far more so than he is given credit for. Like yourself, I read the Gorman book in no time at all. I think he was a truly inspired and inspiring figure. And while I don't want to slander Johnny Rotten, I think he protests too much about Malcolm, and overplays the hard luck stories. I love Steve's book, and think it is the best Pistols book. I can see I've rambled on a bit, so I'll sign off. Thanks again!

@WhyNotGoPlaces 2 месяца назад
Thank you so much for your lovely comments! You didn't ramble at all! That's a funny story about Johnny Ramone and Malcolm. Johnny Ramone always seemed to me to be a prickly guy, so I can imagine Malcolm saying something that would annoy him, like "you guys need a better image." Glad you liked my story. I wanted to tell it because it shows how much he valued what "the kids" were thinking during that pivotal time. I think he was brilliant too. And from my 3 meetings with him (at the Whisky, and twice on the Jan.1978 Sex Pistols tour) he was really sweet, to me at least. I'm still sad he's gone. I'm going on a visit to London in about a month and I want to visit his grave. I've never seen it. I loved Steve's book too.It was personal and emotional, and that made it great. Thanks again for your comments!

Sorry I just read your comment again, and you said it was at "this show" that Johnny chased him out of the dressing room. Did you mean the Whisky shows? Gosh, maybe he did repeat my comments to the band! I also remember him saying when I spoke to him that The Ramones "would look better if they let me take them shopping." Something like that. We were both saying we didn't like their image. He was doing "impromptu market research" with me. I was honored, to be honest. Maybe he went back to the dressing room and said "I need to take you guys shopping to improve your image. The young girls don't like it." That sounds very Malcolm.:)

@@WhyNotGoPlaces I genuinely think that is what happened! I am certain this was the show in question. Dee Dee mentions it in passing in his book, Poison Heart, and I've read about elsewhere also, though cannot recall where at present. It must have been an honour indeed, though you must have looked like the kind of cool and hip kid he wanted to appeal to. And cool and hip you remain, if I may say so. For what it's worth, though - I think the Ramones were wise to stick with their own long hair image. Variety is the spice, etc. Viva Malcolm!

@WhyNotGoPlaces 2 месяца назад
That's amazing! I had no idea that DeeDee mentioned it in his book either, Malcolm being kicked out of their dressing room. I bet Malcolm did go to their dressing room and said something insulting to them, and maybe I did give him the impetus to do that. Thanks for the compliment! Looking back, I was a rather hip young girl for the time and Malcolm must have seen that. And I agree with you. The Ramones had their own image and I'm glad they stuck with it too. I honestly love your stories I told you once before I went to your other videos. I grew up in Norwalk, so you grew up real close to me too. I think you may be a few years older than me I used to go to middle earth records as well. I used to work with band in Hollywood in Orange County, some of them still play today and they’re quite well-known not like to sex pistols but I love these stories. I could probably do a RU-vid channel on my experiences. Thanks for the idea.

That was really good of Paul Gorman to get back to you and admit his mistake about when Malcolm was in LA.

@WhyNotGoPlaces 4 месяца назад
Yes he was very nice about it. I checked his book later and he actually does mention in a line or two that Malcolm went to LA briefly in Feb. 1977. He must have just forgotten. His book is 800 pages so that's understandable!

@@WhyNotGoPlaces Its a brilliant book,he`s a great Author,and I agree Steve Jones` book is fantastic too! I grew up in Holland Park only about a half Mile from Steve so it was fun recognising so many mutual local landmarks of the 1960s-70s..In fact I`m even familiar with his "Subway Nonce" stories too unfortunately!! lol..btw am I right in thinking you are the photographer Eileen Polk? If so,in 2019 I bought the Sid Vicious shirt at Juliens Auctions which according to the enclosed Provenance you are a previous owner! (?) I would like to chat about that privately if poss(?) Great video. The Sex Pistols and Exotica...whats not to like. I recognise the yellow album far right and Yuma album, but whats the other one on the left thats cut off screen?
@WhyNotGoPlaces
@WhyNotGoPlaces 4 месяца назад
How funny that you notice the albums! I do love Exotica records and tiki drinks. Maybe I'll do a future video with a mai tai in hand! My little tiki room, where I read and listen to records, was once a screened in porch before we bought the house. So that space behind me used to be a weird interior window, which I covered up with wood, tiki wall paper, and six album covers. Yma Sumac is the record on bottom right, center bottom is Frankie Carle - "Honolulu Honky Tonk" - a fun record, and left bottom is "Quiet Village", Martin Denny. Top row right is Arthur Lyman" Taboo Vol 2. Last two records on top are Hawaiian compilation albums. Thanks for noticing the details! And thanks for subscribing.

@@WhyNotGoPlaces Hi thanks for the reply. Yes I also love exotica and MCM design. it's strange and I have found that a lot of punks or expunks were/are fans of exotica...Jello Biafra is one well known example, but so are members of Devo, The Residents, The Cramps and even Throbbing Gristle!

That's interesting. I used to live in Palm Springs CA, which is the MCM mecca of the US. I still miss it. I'm in Florida now, in a cute town, but I prefer MCM Palm Springs.

Can listen to McLaren interviews for hours. Not sure if he was a genius,chancer or a mixture of the two. I like the story of miles Copeland getting the pistols a gig and mm going mad saying that the not being able to play gigs was far more important than getting them

I saw them this week at the Whiskey with my brother...I think it was the Wednesday show ...it was awesome and Dee Dee kept staring at us ...a girl up front had a "Dee Dee" Ramones home made t shirt...it was strange cause no one was crushed up front of the stage...they were all at tables ...even though it was crowded...it just seemed strange to me...cause the only time I had been to The Whiskey was for a private birthday party when I was like 7 years old in the '60's....

Hi darling ❤️ it's Mimi Bordeaux your biggest fan😎😂 nah I love what you do and your informative videos. Not to mention your love of my favourite band, the Sex Pistols! Yay! Here's one for Johnny! I love Johnny Rotten not Lydon as he voted for Trump. And he's tuned into a conservative man in his old age. But he's still the greatest frontman ever. So keep on working on the vids and I will see you anon. I feel sorry for you living with your horrible parents 😩🎇🎁 bye

What album is called Anarchy in the UK?
@WhyNotGoPlaces
@WhyNotGoPlaces 3 месяца назад
I believe there's a live album with that title. On this video I mention the single Anarchy, which I bought around Jan. 1977. If I mentioned that title instead of NMTB, it was a mistake on my part. Thanks for watching the video!
