Mega Man X6- The Worst

Finally facing my trauma and reviewing X6 this week, though on the plus side, now I shouldn't have to engage with it again for a while, maybe not for the rest of my life. To say I hate this one would be an understatement, just about everything in this game is horribly done, but if you pay close attention, I do toss a few compliments in from time to time. A bit disappointing that my longest Mega Man video to date is a list of mostly gripes, but hey, I do have a lot to discuss with this one.

I think X7 is more unforgivable as far as making a sequel to milk the franchise because X6 ended with everything wrapped up more definitively. Zero seals himself away to tie into the final draft of Mega Man Zero. Sigma is revived as a pathetic, broken zombie then draws into his raw, primal hatred and transforms into reploid Satan for one final attempt at defeating X and Zero and is killed for good. They actually milked it responsibly when it came to lore and we had an even more definitive end. Then X7, Zero is awake just hanging around doing stuff again, X has become a strawman of a pacifist and they just bring Sigma back casually like he was never even mentally broken and killed for good. That's one of the big reasons I don't want X9. X8 killed Sigma for good "for real" and you know in X9 they'd bring back Sigma... again.

X7 feels like they were trying to do something new and exciting, then got tired and kind of phoned it in with how boring the stages are and how clunky it plays. It's the sort of thing that I can play while having neither fun nor a bad time, sort of a nothing game, though a lot of people do say the worst a game can be is boring. And I mostly want an X9 for a resolution to the Lumine thing. Assuming they didn't just pretend it never happened.

@@ExploDjinn I _think_ I've said it before on your channel, so pardon me if I'm repeating myself: Haven't played X7, and my memories of everything but X and X4 are pretty hazy. The "At least they tried something new!" defense of it never sits right with me. Maybe it is because I'm just too literal with it. If two games are *equally* bad, but one creative team stuck to the "traditional" approach while the other tried a novel (but plausible) approach... okay, bonus points for the second game it is. Not a lot, but enough to break the tie. If it is clear that there was overreaching, cluelessness, etc. going on, then a "new, creative approach" probably deserves an extra demerit instead of extra credit. The whole *If it ain't broke, **_don't_** fix it!"* thing. *However,* I am speaking from ignorance, so I understand X7 could be better than X6. From what I've seen... and heard *BURN TO THE GROUND!* I am skeptical that X7 isn't deserving of the bad reviews it has received, as much or more so than X6. XD

The worst thing about this game, imo, is that it makes you think it's going to be good. The intro is hype, the story premise it at first very intriguing (even if the translation is the actual worst) and the intro stage is impressive with great presentation and a weirdly complex but fun first boss. Add the appearance of nightmare zero and impossible high max first encounter... The expectations are set, and they're not that low. And then the game implodes on itself. It's a massive disappointment and almost feels like a betrayal, which makes me think that they wanted to polish each stage's level design one by one but only had time for the intro stage and MAYBE commander yammark's stage. Well, we ended up with what we have, and for me this is the bottom of the barrel for the series. Not the X series, the *whole* series (at least all the main titles). I see a lot of potential in the stage concepts and it makes me sad, because this could've been great. Regardless of what could've been though, I hate this

@playbossthebest936
@playbossthebest936 Год назад
@@superharpuia apparently it's simply the tight deadline. The developers from megaman X5 came back for this one and they already proved to not be the best branch of capcom there is, but add an insane crunch and it was a recepy for failure. The designer of the mavericks admitted that the game was so rushed he had to give common traits to every design (like gate's gem on the head and standard white hands) in order to meet the deadline. Plus, to add insult to injury, it's not like megaman and bass or mario bros the lost levels where the devs went out of their way to make a tough game for expert players of the respective franchise... This one is hard because of a complete lack of balance! That, and a lot of parts are quite easy instead, like some bosses. I think the only real important factor was time, all cause of capcom's greed and the desire to put the game on a console that was soon to be replaced. Rip

@@playbossthebest936 yeah, I honestly feel bad for the developers of the game. They wanted to make something great, but then Capcom gives them a strict deadline date and a low budget. Honestly, I might be a bit more keen on the intro if I didn't know that it was the first stop on my trip through Hell. While there are a few things I like, I wind up resenting them so much for being used here and they almost end up being a negative, like I mentioned with the OST. Why is it so good?

I *don't* hate X6. I _might_ even like it a little, but I'm not sure. Why? First, besides the obvious reasons, the only games I completed on original hardware in the X series were X1, _maybe_ X2 (I _think_ I borrowed it from a friend...), X4 (borrowed from a friend, played the Saturn version) and... that's it. I played and completed X through X6 via the Nintendo GameCube version of the Mega Man X Collection. I dunno how much better/worse X3, X5, and X6 were in the collection versus the originals. I'm also not that good at detecting subtle differences, so I may not have even noticed in the first place. Second, I've been in a bad way financially for a long time (my own fault, for the curious), so I had to sell off the Mega Man X Collection (along with almost all of my video games) 12 or so years ago. Which means it has been that long since I played Mega Man X2 through X6 in any fashion. I'm working off of memories, here, that are 12+ years old. I haven't played X7, X8, Command Mission, Xtreme, or Xtreme 2. Eventually they'll be a big enough Steam sale on the Mega Man X Legacy Collection I and II when I actually have some discretionary income... but it hasn't happened yet. XP *The point is, I cannot compare X6 with the games I've never played.* *With all that said, out of the first 6 games, Mega Man X6 **_does not_** rank last!* RNG on a Stage to get goodies is bad, but X5 _seemed_ to be built on RNG. I mean, it was in the case of the whole cannon/shuttle thing, but I stressed _seemed_ because I'm talking about the Byzantine *Parts* system. The Guns 'N Roses naming scheme also didn't help, though now I kind of like it (nostalgia - what a drug!). Oh, and then there was the timer that made me stress, but I usually had enough time so that's probably on me. Though I was okay with how the Mavericks themselves "leveled up" the longer you took. I guess I'm staying I found the X5 translation to be as confusing as the X6, but maybe that really was just me? *Addendum:* Oh, yeah, and I also may have had a really _lucky_ first run on X6. That could easily explain the difference in opinion as well...

The worst thing about this game is that the problems it has SHOULDN'T BE THERE. given X4 and X5, this game should have simply been more of "that". Instead, they seemed to have released it unfinished and untested. The telling fact is that it's Japanese without an English dub . Yeah there's English text, but that takes less time to do than actually producing voice dubs. WHY is Sigma the final boss? GATE is supposed to be the final boss. GATE'S battle, BTW, is TERRIBLE, but it's manageable if you have Shadow Armor and full energy tanks. The entire drive of this game should be to get the SHADOW ARMOR so that by the time you finish off the eight Nightmare Investigators, you get to Gate's lab and FEEL UNSTOPPABLE. The Ultimate Armor - which I'll admit I started the game with - is vastly underpowered in this game. Without getting the Blade armor, you can't get the shadow armor parts. Once you have Shadow Armor, you can breeze through Gate's lab, BUT you'll get stopped by the ridiculous leap of faith unless you have hyperdash and jumper parts. Why didn't the Shadow Armor have access to the Nova Strike ? Why can't you CHOOSE which Giga Attack you have? Why can't you have BOTH giga Attacks? I love the Shadow Armor's defense against the end bosses and I'm disappointed they didn't make it easier to play through Gates Lab part 2 since the game really feels like it's climaxing as it's ending. Personally, I had more fun playing through Mega Man X7 than X6. I played through X7 11 times so I could 100% the game. The only Mega Man I played through more was X8 since 100% requires soooo much money. X6 gives me way too much anxiety to replay so I don't. Every now and then I'll play the final boss rush and defeat Sigma with the Shadow Armor. Other than that, the game is too flawed to play.

Last time I played I played X6, I did manage to get the Shadow Armor by cheesing things with Ultimate and only cleared like 3 of the regular stages. Can't remember the specifics, so that might not be helpful, though.

Mega Man X6 used to be my most hated video game of all time back when I first beaten it back in 2018. Back in that year, I made my review of this game and I completely destroyed it and I said I was never gonna play it again (Which was a promise I kept for three years). Funny thing is, I also put this game on the ninth spot on my hardest retro games list. Then I played it again last year in February where I decided I was gonna rebeat every mainline X game. During my second playthrough, I was genuinely shocked that the game was this easy and I busted through the game in no time. Also on that playthrough, I wasted a hour and a half on Ground Scaravich's stage thanks to his stupid RPG paths. Nowadays, I think Mega Man X6 is mediocre with a story that could've been good, but it wasn't due to the crappy translation and the continuity issues (Which is my favorite thing to complain about if a movie or game in a long running franchise manages to screw it up). The stages are either very boring and drag on for too long or it's mediocre. The only stages I genuinely like is Rainy Turtloid and Blizzard Wolfang. The bosses are easy as hell with very predictable patterns and attacks that are very easy to dodge (Excluding Nightmare Mother), the terrible parts system, and the really stupid nightmare effects that only serve to waste your time or piss you off. As for the soundtrack, it's my all time favorite Mega Man Soundtrack of the whole franchise! The songs are so damn good that I could listen to it for 10+ hours and never get tired of it (very few games I've played/beaten managed to do that). Also correction, Dr. Weil isn't Dr. Wily because his Japanese name was Dr. Vile. They decided to change his name because they thought fans might confuse him for Vile from the X series. That and because Dr. Weil is way worse then Dr. Wily could ever be. I mean, this dude wiped out most of the reploid population and over half of the human population. As for Master Albert, I'm not completely sure. I'm currently replaying Mega Man ZX Advent for the third time, so I'll have to wait to answer that one. Also, can I just say that his actual design looks really damn stupid. He looks like a rejected monster of the week villian from a generic anime. But hey, at least he isn't as bad as Serpent from Mega Man ZX.
@ExploDjinn
@ExploDjinn Год назад
Pretty much any old evil scientist in a Mega Man game after Classic gets people speculating about Wily, which is where that list, and my denial of Isoc comes from. Weil also has his connection to Zero further reinforcing that, but I find Wily to be more comical than evil, so I'm with you there. And my thoughts on Master Albert are another video, but the guy has some interesting possibilities.

9:00 Let us both agree to disagree. The world would not end. From my point of view, X6 has a better stage design than X5 and X7 and maybe X8 as well. I am not saying X6 has *GOOD* level design. But the problems X5, X7 and X8 have make it better. X5 has two main problems. First is that it interrupts you every step. It really feels like this game was for 4 year olds. Second is the fact that there are virtually no punishments in the game. Enemies do very little damage, checkpoints drop like candy and there are no gameovers. This pretty much makes the game worthless. X7 also have several problems. First and most obvious being the clunky controls. It's very janky but fortunately not unresponsive. But it IS very slow and feels like Molasses. Second is the fact that the 3-D aspect was not thought of enough and as a result, it kills the level design. Another thing is that enemies are bullet sponges. Mega Man X8's main problem is that it deviates too much from the classic formula to the point it's virtually unrecognisable. Stage are very gimmicky and very little platforming is involved. Something Mega Man was never about. Compared to other 3, X6 doesn't interrupt you, it punishes you for your mistakes, it isn't clunky, you can't scum it, enemies aren't bullet sponges and it doesn't deviate from the typical formula. Am I saying X6 has good level design? No. Not even close. It has terrible level design but it is far better than those other 3.

They range from boring, too easy with no fun gameplay, brutality difficult (Not the fun kind of hard like Castlevania, Gradius, Contra, etc), poorly made with ugly graphics with no fun gameplay, and so on. The crappy games I've played were The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare (SNES), Sonic Blast (Which might take the cake for the ugliest retro game I've ever played), Sonic Labyrinth, Solar Jetman: Hunt For The Golden Warpship (A lot of NES fans love that game, but it wasn't for me because of the terrible controls), Mega Man X7 (Which is so damn boring that it'll actually be more entertaining to look at a wall for five hours), Stake or Die (The controls are so bad that it makes you question if you're controller is broken or not), Ecco Jr (The game is way too easy with literally nothing of interest going on with literally no challenge whatsoever), Devil May Cry 2 (Way too easy and boring with a bland plot that is so bad that the main Character doesn't even want to be there), and finally the worst game I've ever played (Currently), Crazy Bus (It literally isn't a video game. Hell, it typically doesn't have graphics either).
