"microwaves work, by making molecules and stuff...wiggle...like that."
@1RadicalOne
@1RadicalOne 14 лет назад
No. Microwave ovens are tuned to the frequency of vibration of a water molecule. The microwaves increase the vibration, thus increasing temperature of the water and therefore of your food. You could in theory modify the magnetron to emit a different frequency, that of the molecule of silicon dioxide - the main component of glass.

@1RadicalOne 14 лет назад
An easier way would just be to tune the microwave to the frequency of silicon dioxide rather than water.

is it a good idea to microwave this?
@doomermeeko
@doomermeeko 12 лет назад
@Matticusjk density has nothing to do with it. it's about the bonds between the molecules.
@1RadicalOne
@1RadicalOne 13 лет назад
Wrong. That is already done in some industrial microwaves, usually for the purpose of melting metals in short order. It is done by altering the frequency of the magnetron, the emitter of the microwaves to be in sync with the vibrational frequency of whatever material you are seeking to heat and/or melt. Each atom has its own frequency. Ever hear of a cesium clock? Same principle, different application.

@thedragonburn 12 лет назад
@Hatchwork he's teaching it wrong though. it has to do with the resonance frequency of materials. microwaves work at the resonance frequency of water, thus making water "vibrate". it has nothing to do with how solid or stable something is.

No because we do have a Myth Busters.

@DidntKnowWhatToPut1 Nope, in the int'l physics demo community everybody copies the good ones. Best to add your own improvements (like not torching the bottle itself, it may shatter.) It's only in journals that we're required to give attributions. Try it with a hunk of obsidian. Instead of melting, it turns into volcanic ash! Well, foam-glass actually. Unlike the Hawaiian type, most lavas are full of dissolved gas, that's why most volcanoes erupt like rocket engines.

His explanation of how this works is not quite right. In fact it's probably wrong. :-) If it were true, you would see this progress quite differently.. you would see a quicker cascade.. the bottle would fall apart pretty fast. It doesn't.. it doesn't accelerate.. it decelerates. But then, in general, the science behind why this works is fairly new, and we don't actually have a solid understanding of it. As a hint, I would be very curious to see what happens if he sealed the vent, and squirted in a load of N2 before he put the shard in to keep heating.

oh my he is irritating. Most people with any schooling know that microwave ovens emmit a very specific wave frequency that has a great affect on liquids. People who don't are usually those who think their mobile is cooking their brain.
