You’re right Art. The sensor was still good, it just needed to be rotated 360 degrees counter-clockwise. If the ribbon was broken, I would have had to replace it.

@@mercedesbenzspecialist well my has snapped and I soldered it, but as my app does not read the angle I can't tell if it's at zero, but buttons work.

@@ambientsounds1416 If it's not at zero or close to it, you'll get the traction control ESP light. Sounds like you did a good job.

@@mercedesbenzspecialist fixed it, i got thinkcar dongle which reads steering angle, all sorted. Previous owner obviously had the clock off and put it in incorrectly so it snapped.

No. It calculates the steering angle. Check your steering pump, or power steering fluid reservoir for low fluid or turbulence with the engine running. If there is turbulence (fluid bubbling) in the power steering reservoir while the engine is running, the filter inside your reservoir is clogged. Replace your power steering reservoir.

You can spin it by hand in any direction. When you feel resistance, spin it the opposite way and count the revolutions. Total revolutions divided by two is center. Or use a good scanner that will show live data of the steering angle. Like the icarsoft MB II. amzn.to/3WbVC1z

I found the part by searching for the Mercedes term for my GLA 250-- an "X 156" for some arcane reason.

I haven’t done a 2015 GLA. 2003-2014 require no calibration with a scanner. You can reset it by moving the steering wheel from lock to lock all the way left, then all the way right, center, then drive it.

@@mercedesbenzspecialist After first install, and strangely, the car pulled to the LEFT. To cure this symptom, either park with wheels turned all the way to right. Or, while running, turn wheel all the way right, past strong resistance. But still SAS warning lights. Today, I removed airbag, and spun clockspring ONE ROTATION LEFT. After driving, warning lights are off, and running normal. Thanks for $$-Saving video! It saved me an overnight trip to dealership, since nobody wanted to try the repair locally. And it really boosted my confidence for auto repairs.

No. Your car should still start even if the steering angle sensor is bad.

What issue are you having besides the error message?

@@mercedesbenzspecialist the vehicle goes off and you can only start it again after some time.

So far I've tried changing the pickup sensor, fuel pump, plugs, and rpm the one underneath but the problem has persisted.

It turns off while driving? While you’re accelerating? Or while you’re at a red light?

Also when I read my steering wheel angle sensor with my scanner it’s read 0 when my steering wheel is straight. Horn , cruise control not working , also when the car runs straight steering is 25 degree off

Was the steering wheel removed? Why is the steering wheel 25degrees off? If it’s because you had to remove the steering column. The steering column module may have been damaged during removal/install.

This is in case your steering angle sensor is broken. If it was unplugged or you disconnected the battery and it just needs resetting then the reset your describing would work.

Call a Mercedes-Benz dealership. They will give you the part number.

Check steering module wiring harness for engine oil leaking into it. There are also recalls for electrical steering modules for the A180. Check with your local dealer to see if there is a recall for your Mercedes.

The most common cause is a broken spiral ribbon. Why does it break? Through no fault of the user, just wear and tear. Maybe the ribbons in the CLAs are of less quality than the older models.
