The amazing German Messerschmitt BF 109! BF 109G-6 model. Another excellent addition to the BF-109 series. Turn up the speakers and listen to that engine!
This aircraft is restored and owned by the Messerschmitt Foundation of Manching, Germany. The video is a footage composition of three flights.
From the Aviation Film Arcrhives of Manfred Poznanski.

they are extremely hard to land, even on flat surfaces and tarmac. this pilot is excellent to land on such bumpy terrain where even some experienced Luftwaffe pilots crashed. Very good video!!

I believe most of allied WW2 veterans still have a bad feeling in their neck, hearing this sound. Horiffying sound indeed. Also....one of the most difficult WW2 aircraft to land. Great video.

@MGB1977Red
@MGB1977Red 13 лет назад
Most ME109's were lost ground-looping on take off or especially landing. You're never safe till it's tied down or in the hanger. The landing gear are actually attached to the fuselage and are splayed out to give wider track. An offshoot of the biplane days and construction. Cantilever monoplanes were still new in '36 and they didn't trust the landing loads to an unbraced wing. The early ME109s had a tail skid to keep things straight on the rollout. Dangerous operating off a paved runway.

An old acquaintance of mine in Germany who was flying instructor during the war informed me that as many trainee pilots were lost landing and taking off as were lost in action against the enemy.Mainly due to the narrow undercarriage track-you are correct spercepolnes.

jfaMan: I grew up on an airport and even as a young child I could identify the type of aircraft passing overhead with out having to look up. I thoroughly enjoy hearing the groan and roar of a powerful piston engine as it passes by me. It equates to the sounds of a classic symphony to me. Thank you for allowing the strength and majesty of this classic aircraft come through with the images rather that masking them with some distracting period music. Great aircraft, great video, great job!

i sure love the 109, it is the single most succesful fighter of ww2, it was in service for the germans almost a decade, and beacuse it was in service so long, it claimed more victories than most any other aircraft, the mustang is good too, a excelent performer, but wasnt around as long as the BF109 and my friends, thats what really makes the 109 so great!

With tube-valve based electronics, the allies developed the cavity magnetron that allowed higher (ghz) frequency operation, and increases in power, range and precision for radar and radio beams. Both sides worked on sonar detection but the allies started with, and increased a lead in the area which along with aircraft search radar ended u boat effectiveness. Eletron tubes or valves were minaturized and improved to a much greater extent by the allies during the war.

One of the most underrated fighters of WW2. The BF 109 was a truly amazing little fighter in my opinion, and the G-2 and G-6 were well liked by the aces that flew them. After the G-6, the 109 became an overweight pig and struggled in the interceptor role that it excelled at earlier in the war. Personally, I love the G-6 the most with the G-2 being my next favorite.
@kylestickley8096

Hartmann and many others liked the F series for their maneuverability, but you can't complain about a 20 or 30 mm cannon you're riding behind!
@edrohhhhhhhhh
@edrohhhhhhhhh 8 лет назад
Never was underrated. Was a great fighter, every general knew that. the problem was that technologically its design start to become obsolete (wing shape fir example). When war reaches the apex, the BF109 start to become inferior against its counterparts. the 109 was a design of the 1930's, almost a decade when war ends. The G variants was the technology climax for the 109. Nothing more could be done or something really drastic, technologically speaking. And even that, the G was inferior to the Mustangs in speed and endurance. Probably, the K variant could be better. Uh, and the 109 was lighter than the mustang's and the p47's

Erich Hartmann when he served on the western front downed every American aircraft he encountered, while older than most Allied fighters it was holding its own with skilled pilots. No other plane has the amount of kills as the Messerschmitt and also the P-51 was designed by a German immigrant.

The whistle is the engine supercharger. The engine wasn't designed around the cannon and the DB series inverted engines pre-date the Me109. The Me109 design allowed for cannon blast tube to pass through the V of the cylinders and out through a hollow prop shaft and reduction gear.

This fighter was built after WW2 by a few other contries in pretty good numbers if I remeber correctly. Spain was the largest manfucaturer, and someone left me a comment on here that even Isreal used them in the late 40's. I'm proud of my German heritage also. They are great engineers and very disciplined. Man are schools in the U.S. suck. Stanford/Yale/Harvard depending on what your degree is in are our best, but MIT is one of the best in the world, if not the best in certain degrees.

@lokeyUnek Many of the piston fighter aircraft had a "war emergency power" option. On the Mustang, the pilot had to break a wire stop to engage the setting. It was only to be used for a short time (less than 5 minutes) or for extreme emergency since at that power setting the engine would be damaged or have a shortened life.

I remember reading that the P51 was designed by a German guy who was working for North American Aviation. At that time the CEO was another guy who had German parents. There was some common rumor that this is why the early P51 looked a bit like Me 109 but it probably had nothing to do with it.

I said inline 12 by accident also. The 605 was an INVERTED V-12. They also stuck in the 601 and the Junkers Jumo 210 in early variants of the fighter. Germans tried lots of engines in the 109. I'm sure at one point a few BMW's were installed. We wont know since their are barely any left.
