This pedal is responsible for me not quitting guitar over how shitty my line 6 spider sounded.

I honestly wasn't expecting a pedal with metal in the name to actually get a good metal tone.

I was honestly expecting another metal zone but it actually sounds rather good for what it does, even if it's not my thing.

Use this for old style tube amps that don't have the gain for metal. It makes the perfect sharp edge for whoofy sounding amps.

This pedal is great! You can go from Burzum to early Helloween. Btw no mids, no bass, all the gain, all the treble and some reverb gets you what I like to call “wasp in a cave sound”.

Rolling back on the gain knob produced some nice lightly driven stuff, wheras pulling the mids and bass super high produced some definite fuzz. This is a good all-round drive pedal, really.

I remember having a Pocket metal muff, I thought it was crap but now that I think of it I might have just been a really shit player at a time and would now be able to dial in a decent tone

It's not bad... just needs more gain... n less mids.... and all the gain \m/

Actually, since in my country (Greece) amps for a gig are always provided by the club/bar/etc where we re playing, i found this pedal to be a life saver. Not only because it once saved me from using an only-clean-channel combo (in a heavy metal gig :P ) , it just feels nice to know that the tone you are getting will be the same always and the one you like, instead of having to rely on the amp the store will be using :P

best bang for the buck distortion pedal EVER!

I own this pedal, and i do like it, it is honestly one of the best "metal" pedals for affordable money out there. i never really used to top boost, i have always found a bit to "Black metal" sounding for my taste. but it is fun to have a "wanna play black metal, click right here" button !

I had this on my board for many years and have only just retired it for the TC Electronics Dark Matter. The top boost was almost never engaged because like you said, it already is smokin' hot. Great review too!

This has become one of my go to pedals. My favorite is a combo of the big muff boosted by the tube screamer but second is the metal muff. The metal muff followed by a quality delay pedal (I use the TC Flashback) sounds awesome for lead guitar sounds.

I got this nearly 10yrs ago rather cheaply but have never found much use for it. Usually just sounds thin and shrill, but after seeing this and other videos achieving something palatable I'll give it another shot.

I've owned that pedal for years and honestly, it sounds great on stage. It wasn't until I got a Mesa Triple Rec that I found head distortion that I liked so this was my main distortion pedal on stage for quite a while. Works great, sounds great, love it.

Electro-Harmonix just is a great pedal company all around, haven't heard a pedal I didn't hate, and the Metal Muff sounds much better than the Metal Zone. It does everything the Metal Zone does, but better.

I haven't been keeping up lately. Have you made t-shirts that say "all the gain" yet?

I just bought it, I’m mainly hoping to get my own unique sound. So this seems like a good start, not to mention the boost thing almost being like a second pedal, is hopefully gonna give me more variety.

Nice review man. Also got that stuff... Combined with another as filter, can get almost Black album MetallcA's tone. But already on its own, deliverin good sounds, with as without top boost engaged. Keep it up, u still make some good job :) *horns up*

Have you seen the Joyo Metalhead? I'd be interested in your take on it. Apparently, it's the most affordable usable pedal that says metal, with an EQ section that only has mid and high controls.

You could almost get a Nile esque tone out of it with that Top Boost setting on and turned up a bit. This would be a perfect death metal pedal

need ur help guys.. so ive got the DigiTech TL-2 and when im playing with others i can barely hear myself.. am i setting it wrong or its all the "scooped mids" thing.. and if so ,will an EQ pedal solve it? i wanna go for the boss ge-7 ... plz help :D

I think, it really depends on the amp you are using the Muff through. I'm using it through my Kettner solid state and I like my tone a lot. I play thrash and Dream Theater (works really well with some delay).

Still my favorite pedal for metal and my distortion needs, I have a single and a double but it is so inexpensive in comparison to many of the trend items that do the same sounds. Can't imagine not learning guitar and not having this pedal.

This is like a metal zone but it actually sounds good.

Ive been using a deluxe bass big muff for my fuzz sound on my guitar pedal board for a while now and i was pleasantly surprised with the result! EHX certainly make some winners

I have a nano metal muff and a sd1 with the c6 mod and the latter works awesome as a boost for the former!

I was surprised when I found out that The Sword used a Metal Muff for a while before switching to a Bogner Extasy Red or something.

I do love the fuzz element it comes with it.

I have the 3 dial version, it's one of my fave distortion pedals in my collection... really great for high gain alternative rock/metal of the 90's imo

I think its a great distortion pedal. not eveyone has money to buy a good amp or invest in all the tricks like boosting an amp into high gain. with this pedal you can get a gnarly metal tone right out of the gate. I bought the 'chinese clone' of this pedal called the "JOYO Extreme Metal" and while I can't say if it would hold up to the metal muff durability wise, it does have a nearly perfect match in the tone department. the Joyo is fine and durable enough in an at-home setting and possibly even recording/rehearsal studio. However, if I were gigging, where the pedal will be bounced around and tossed about between set up, take down, etc, I'd try to get a hold of a real Metal Muff. I payed ~$40 USD for my Joyo Extreme Metal new and would totally recommend if you're interested in the metal muff.

What's that pickup like? Quite a flat response, or what? Is there a comparable other pickup for reference?

Good video! I am still a fan of the original Big Muff pedal but I use it as a set it and forget it vibe. Just stomp. This looks way more useful than the original. I like that you emphasize the importance of the head over a pedal. I have a jazz based amp so this would be perfect for that. I think that original Big Muff and a modded Proco Rat is really all I need for a punk/psychobilly/garage sound. Thanks Collin!!!

so, the distortion channel on the Marshall DSL 100H sounds better than this pedal? is it what he tried to say at the end?

Can't get anywhere close to this sound with Metall Muff and my THR10 (tried all modes). Anyone knows what are the other two pedals in this demo and if they are key to getting the right sound?

i honestly Love this pedal. there are just genuinely better Distortion pedals, but the combo of the high gain plus the hint of fuzz makes it very versatile. plus its not bust the bank expensive

The way I see it, this pedal is modern hardcore in a box. I love it.

i have this pedal and was attempting to use it in my band but it was really hard to get a tone i liked out of it when playing with the rest of the band. The drummer said i made his eyes bleed one time when I hit the top boost to solo. For me it is just too fizzy. My Mesa has an eq switch that i can adjust to get my leads to cut through the mix. At this point my core sound is my amps head distortion.
