My brother and I got metroid for christmas in 1990. I was 5 he was 6. We went left, got the orb, then proceeded to spend hours trying to get past the wall. We still laugh to this day how long we tried before we decided to go to the right

Metroid is a “where the Fuk do you go” game and i hated those as a kid. 😪 I did like that it was kinda like Mega Man. It wasnt till years later when i got older and started collecting games that i finally found a love for the series.

The earliest Metroid memory I have is my dad had a copy of it for NES but I never played it because I grew up in the Late SNES early ps1and N64 era and didn’t really play “older” games. But when I got older around 12 years old and was more into retro stuff is when I first played and beat it! It is such a great game. In 2020 during quarantine I decided to play it again because it had been so long and I loved it all over again!

When I first played Metroid, that was around the same time as yourself, '89-'90. Only I was 11/12 years old. I was blown away by the atmosphere and the music. But i was confused with the game trying to figure out where to go. Finally beat it...30 years later. eh-hehe...

Metroid was one of the few NES games I played that I never conquered legitimately. It wasn't the levels(I have the map memorized to this day), it wasn't the bosses.(I have beaten both Ridley and Kraid as well as mother brain on separate occasions) it was the password system. Everytime I would get somewhere of any consequence I would write it incorrectly and have to start from the beginning... I was finally able to beat it via the code Justin Bailey.. but I still haven't done it without the code ... a save file would I think have cemented this games legacy even further. Love your videos.🤗

Friend of mine down the street had super Metroid, so I would go play that and it blew me away. We only had an Nes at the time, so my mom took me to target to get the game. It was a great day, even though it wasn't as fancy as the SNES version, it was mine. Great memories.

I have such fond memories of this game as a child. I remember my brother and I picked it up out of a bargain bin in mid 1991 for $30 AUD (for some reason I remember the amount, I think we just had exactly enough). My brother and I knew nothing about this game a part from the screenshots on the box and we took a risk i it. I remember finding it incredibly challenging and using grid paper to draw maps for it. It was like nothing we had played, haunting music and confusing pathways. I had recently moved with my family pretty far from where we previously lived and still was in contact with my best friend via mail at the time who also owned the game. He was struggling with it and I remember copying my map by hand and mailing it to him. I do remember completing it as a kid but I was 10 at the time. While the newer games in the series are “better” to me this is still my favourite. I wish I could find my childhood map I had drawn.

I got Metroid for Christmas of 1987. I'd honestly never even heard of it until I opened it that morning. I also got Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Rad Racer, and Cobra Command that morning. So naturally, I played those game first since I'd actually asked for them. Then I finally fired up Metroid. I remember literally playing it almost 2 days straight. I had no idea what I was doing or where I was supposed to go. But I was having a blast exploring the world. When I returned to school after Christmas break, my best friend who also had an NES also got Metroid for Christmas, and we both shared information about where items were or where to go if you were stuck. I remember beating the game and being so proud since I didn't use any cheats or codes to skip a section of the game. And this was also before I had access to any maps from either Nintendo Power or the NES Players Handbook.

Just thinking about my experience with Metroid makes me realize just how much I have to say about it. I never even knew that the series existed until I played Nintendo Land with my friends who had a Wii U. I had a Wii, and it was somewhere around this time that I realized that I could buy virtual console games for it and one of the games I bought was Metroid. I was about 11, and I remember playing it, watching videos of it with my friend, and even running around outside pretending that we were exploring and fighting aliens in the game. I did reach the final boss room but never actually finished it. I probably only got that far because I could suspend my game with the Wii. At that point I was setting my sights towards Super Metroid. But, in a somewhat complicated series of events, I finally became aware of the “best endings” that you could achieve in the early Metroid games. This actually really bothered me then, and I quit playing Metroid for at least a year. It wasn’t until a while later that I bought a metroidvania game called Xeodrifter. Between that and the good memories I had of playing actual Metroid, I finally bought Metroid 2 on my 2DS… and I haven’t stopped playing Metroid since.

I never beat Metroid on NES... I do remember watching my cousin Ed beat it for the first time. And yeah, just like everyone... he did it in a fast enough time to warrant "that post credits reveal." The one that revealed Samus to be a woman. I remember him actually being "so disgusted" by that.. but me, feeling like that was the coolest thing ever!! I was 7 years old, he was 11, and yet we were divided on that reveal!! LOL. Suffice is to say, he's since changed his tune.. and looking back on it, it was really a revolutionary swerve well before it's time. My fondest memory of Metroid was with Super Metroid. I played this game to death!! I was about 13 or 14, and this was easily my favorite game of the 4th gen, or at least in my top 3. My cousin Manny was also an incredible gamer, and like your cousin Manny... he had this knack for just picking up any game, and absolutely destroying it. He was just really really good... One holiday we decide to swap the games. I lent him Metroid, he lent me Starfox. About a month later, he gave me back my cartridge and I gave him back his... I never got around to beating Starfox... Oh well, I figured.. now back to Metroid. I still had that itch to beat it one more time. There I go, popping in cartridge... and BOOM!!! I see that he had a campaign beaten in like 1:47... an hour and 47 minutes. "NO WAY!!!!" I thought to myself. How?!? I asked him how many times he beat it to get that record. He told me it was only his second go... unbelievable. It took me a good 6 to 8 hours to beat it the first time!!! So I set upon trying to match his time. I made it a mission of mine!! That time was a blemish on my best campaign, which I think was like a little over 3 hours. I couldnt just start up another mission, only to constantly stare at that "1:47," taunting me on that mission select screen. A constant reminder of my own inferior shortcomings compared to my cousin's glory. lol. So naturally, I'd come home from school, eat, do my homework, shower and BAM!!! It was straight to my SNES... I played for like two weeks just mapping out my strategy. seeing what I had to get as essential, and what I could skip out on... the difference being the x-ray light... I still hadn't fully memorized where the hidden trapfalls where... My cousin? He decided he didn't need it, and that was the difference. The best I could do was like 2:10... While I still felt like a failure, I look back it.. and I think to myself now... today in my early 40's, "I beat Super Metroid in a little over two hours!!!" That's just incredible... for me, at least. A couple of years back, I scored one of those SNES minis... just for fun, why not? They were constantly selling out, and I happen to catch one at Target before it was snagged. So yeah, I take it home. I plug it into my TV (with a giant HDMI cable, as the controller wasn't cordless... which still sucks). I tur it one, and I start going over the games with my wife. She's super stoked they had Donkey Kong as such... There was also Mother which I had always wanted to play as a teen. There was Zelda, which we both had fond memories of as well... but sure enough... there it was... Super Metroid. I told her about my 2:10 minute run, and about the mission completion race with my cousin, who I had since unfortunately had a major falling out with. It's a long and painful story, I'll spare you the details. It was kind of an emotional retelling, seeing the history that unfurled as we became adults... but there was something magically nostalgic about that time. The holiday where my cousin obliterated my completion time. Still, I didn't do too bad myself. So yeah, that night right there on my couch with my wife next to me, I set about seeing if I could recapture that moment. I set about trying to beat Super Metroid in one sitting, in 2 hours... Sadly, the farthest I got was Maradia in closer to 3 hours... Then I got lost. By that point, it was time to go to sleep... I eventually beat it though, which was still a fun trip down memory lane for me. Watching this video reminded me of that holiday season, chasing that goal with my cousin... I haven't seen or spoken to him in years. Again, it's a VERY long story. However... I may just want to pick the phone up, reach out to him. See if he'd wanna get a beer or something... and maybe for starters, talk about Metroid... and that one holiday. Thanks for this video, man. Really...

I got Metroid a long time after it came out. When the SNES was in full swing a local shop that would rent games had a big sale on used NES games to move excess stock. I was flush with Christmas money so i was able to get 4 games that day. I know Metroid and the old GI Joe game were 2 of them. Now its my favorite Nintendo series.

The very first Metroid I played was Super Metroid back in 2011... On a PC... Via emulator... and I was in my mid twenties... From there I went all the way backwards playing Zero Mission, Fusion, then jumped ahead to the Prime series which I adored and lastly played Metroid NES and yes, it was really hard, I didn't love it but I have big respect for that game and for what it represents. I beat it with a guide. I got late to the party but I'm definitely here to stay!!

Great video, Tyler! Man you brought on the memories. Nailed it! Metroid had vibe. Super Mario Bros was the blue-sky-sunshine surprise revolution that made me demand an NES from my parents. Zelda took me on a heroic adventure like none before it (and there was that chip shortage that made it seem as rare and precious as its gold cart looked). But Metroid had VIBE. It felt so dark. That title music with those deep bass pads and those stuttering high pitch synth notes. And the minimalist beeps and boops and creepy percussion of the Silence theme. That music set a tone. A feeling of isolation in a game like nothing before it. You just knew you were alone and somewhere you shouldn’t want to be. It was somehow both claustrophobic and endless. It was so weird and imaginative. A genius game. I loved it. I remember writing the save codes down. And making notes about the map on graph paper. I remember beating the game and my heart racing a million miles an hour as I was escaping the self-destruct sequence. Just a classic climactic ending right out a movie…with a surprise twist! What an experience. I’m so glad I was 13 when it came out. I have deep nostalgia burn-in for that game. By the time Super Metroid came out I was 21 and not gaming during that period. Playing it years later, it is a great improvement and continuation. Flawless really. But for me, the OG NES Metroid will always be my #1.

First and best game I got as NES pack-in title along Ice Climber(sooo underrated 2 player game). Pretty much obsessed with the game, me & my much older brother. We found all the secrets and mapped the whole game through and through. I beat it many times and had speedrun competition with him I ended winning in the end. Music is burned on the ridges of my brain. Had that awesome Alien-vibe in that title music. So many great memories.

I remember playing Metroid on NES as a little kid. I remember loving running around shooting all the monsters and finding out that you can upgrade your character Samus. I really got into Metroid many, many years later when Metroid Fusion was released on Game Boy Advance which I got for that Christmas back in 2002. Sometime after I beat Metroid Fusion I purchased Metroid Prime (loved that live action commercial btw, same with the American add for Zero Mission). These days I own all physical Metroid games from NES - Switch + all Amiibo's & a Japanese Figma Metroid: Other M figure of Samus in her Varia suit. I love the Metroid franchise & can't wait for Metroid Prime 4 when it comes out (hopefully very soon).

So, my first experience with Metroid was actually when I used my GBA/GameCube link cable to unlock bonus content for Metroid Prime. At that time it was a nice little bonus. But as I grew up I was becoming really good at the game. So good that I mastered all the achievements on the Retro Achievements website just recently. In fact, that is the first game that I mastered, followed by Metroid II, Zero Mission and the GBA port of the original. After October, I plan to do the same with Super Metroid and Fusion. Metroid has been a part of my life for 20 years now, and the it is one of my all time favorite video game franchises.

Metroid really is the best combination of both Mario and Zelda. The platforming plus non linear gameplay gave this game it's uniqueness. It sounds silly now but one of the most impressive things about this game was that you could explore right as well as left. Yes, both directions. I think Rygar predates Metroid by a few weeks and let you do that first but not to this extent. I agree that going back to this is not easy and it feels a bit rough compared the later games in the series. Rooms that look the same and some that lead to dead ends but this game still has a certain charm to it. A certain atmosphere that brings me back. A certain fun factor that makes this a true NES classic.

I guess I’m a few years older than you since the Nintendo hit the US market when I was like 9 years old. Myself and cousins had so much anticipation for Santa to bring us the NES for Christmas. I couldn’t wait so for about 1 month b4 Xmas I would carry around a picture of the NES from a Target ad. While Super Mario Brothers was my primary reason for getting the NES, Santa surprised me and also gave me some creepy looking game called Metroid. I didn’t even want to play it at first. However, I fell in love with the game, I’d stay up sometimes to the sunrise on weekends playing Metroid. Since I couldn’t just hop on the Internet and get a map of the game, I basically memorized the different worlds and beat Mother Brain based on trial and error. As a 10 year old, I really felt like I had accomplished something.

My best friend owned this game. We used to play it at his house, some time between 89 and 91. Somehow, we managed to beat it. I think it was mostly him playing. My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I don't remember us using guides or a game genie to beat it. If we didn't, I have no idea how we beat it. We didn't make maps, and it isn't exactly easy to find your way around in that game. We would have been between 7 and 9 depending on what year it was exactly.

Y'know, despite my one or two gripes with this game, the atmosphere alone is what keeps drawing me in. The music, the feeling of loneliness, isolation, dread, fear, of getting lost, or becoming prey to the wildlife of Zebes... It's honestly something really special. ...I just don't like how stingy they are with health and health pick-ups. Everything else, I can manage, but if you die while you're pretty powerful, but still without, say, the Screw Attack (which is just the coolest name for an attack method ever), then you might as well just reset the whole thing, really. On a side note, I always find it endearing and heartwarming how even back then, parents liked to play video games with their kids. I sometimes feel like the norm was parents not caring about video games at all, finding them a waste of time and money, and in some extreme cases, the beginning of a path for a bad life. Even today, that still happens sometimes. So it's always endearing to see parents break that notion, and have fun with their kids, doing the things they both like.

definitely one of my favorites growing up! you think playing it normally is anxiety-inducing, you should hear what the escape alarm at the end of the game sounds like on the Japanese disk version, that will drive you nuts!!

Ok let me just start off by saying I've never heard of your channel and this video just popped up as a suggestion. I am so glad it did! I loved this video and I'm very much looking forward to your other videos. First things first....your buddy had on an H-Street shirt! The way you described this game is exactly how I felt about the game. I'm 46 and I remember getting this game and only playing it in section. I got high anxiety playing this and not want to mess up. It was extremely hard to play long periods and I never beat this game. It's the ONLY NES game I never completed! The story of your buddy's mom is the best shit I've ever heard gaming wise....hahahaha! This video was awesome. I'm subbed and thank you so much for making this the way you did. I've never been taken back to Metroid like this before

I think my brother beat it. For me I just got confused as to where to go and what to do when I tried it but I was real young at the time. I like these style of games nowadays, I beat bloodstained ritual of the night and that is very metroidvania

I remember being shocked when I discovered Samus was a female. Up until that point, video game protagonists were muscular and resembled most Hollywood action heroes in one way or another. Finding out Samus was female was a ‘first’ that always stuck with me. Nintendo were (and still are) innovators who never disappoint. The gaming landscape changed after Metroid’s release.

Never could beat Metroid when I was little. Beat 2 and 3 and 4 and 0 when I was little, as the games came out... Working on 5 now :) But I finally beat classic original Metroid for NES...on my 3DSxl like a year ago. Kinda cheating on the 3DSxl because I could save anytime/anywhere...but I'll take it :) Playing the classics still gets my inner child... emotional :)

Was lost in this game until a friend showed me bombing holes in the floors and walls. That blew the game WIDE OPEN for me. Before that I was showed how to beat Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Now...who can dare to say that Nintendo only appeals to kids!?!? As a child,, I recalled playing Metroid and watching Aliens at my buddy's house and walked out as a different person. 😆 Metroid and Aliens are inseparable since.

I never owned it originally but rented it many times. It was actually kind of hard to find and was out of print for a while. But playing with the password system kept the game original for nearly forever. And yeah Samus is a woman. Why not? It’s supposed to be like Alien! It’s obvious when you think about it.

Absolutely. As a 5 year old in 1991 it was surprising especially in a video game!
