Michael Jordan ruining the Cavaliers needs a deep rewind | CHOSEN: Chapter 2

Haven't seen Chapter 1 yet? Well, this might help: • The birth and destruct...
Chapter 3 coming July 17th.
To fully appreciate the Cleveland Cavaliers' pursuit of the 2016 NBA championship, we must go back to the second chapter of Cavs history. In the '80s, new ownership saved the franchise from leaving Cleveland. New management brought in the right people to form a promising young contender, the so-called "Team of the '90s." But Cleveland's rise coincided with that of Michael Jordan, and after MJ snuffed out the Cavaliers' late-'80s postseason runs, the "Team of the '90s" self-destructed. Let's remember how Jordan's dominance drove the injured, frustrated Cavs to some bad moves that sunk them back to rock bottom, extending their historic drought through the end of the century.

The Wilkens/Price/Daugherty Cavs are kind of a forgotten squad in history. The 1989 team tied the Lakers for the second-best record in the NBA, but also had the best point differential in the league (+7.6). The 1992 team also tied Portland for the second-best record in the NBA at 57 wins. I think they get forgotten because they didn't have the year-to-year consistency of teams like Portland, Phoenix, Utah, etc., and their best ever pre-LeBron squad got bounced in the first round. Also, not sure it was said in the video, but their regular-season record against Chicago in 1989 was 6-0. When Jordan said they'd win in 4 games, it was almost like Brandon Jennings' "Bucks in six," if only Brandon Jennings was an All-NBA caliber player.

Oh my GOD this so good. Like, "should be featured on every existing sports network" - good. Like, "I was on the edge of my seat to the point I almost fell into my monitor" - good. Like, "I have to rewatch both of the first two chapters again right before watching the next one" - good. Y'all are insane and I hope you get ALL of the attention with this incredibly written, voiced, and animated quality content. I'm a big, homegrown CLE sports fan that never really appreciated the Cavs' history so this helps a LOT (really only got interested in the Browns about 5 or 6 years ago, and now intently watch/listen to everything NFL). I was always under the assumption that the Cavs were always this middling team that never truly rose to greatness because I never really paid attention to the NBA. But this deep dive has been incredible and probably the most entertaining sports documentary I've ever seen; and this alone is getting me interested into paying attention to the NBA, and namely the Cavs. To be clear, I've always paid attention to and appreciated CLE teams, but because of the volatility of the NBA and recent influx of superteams (Heat, Warriors, Nets), it just never seemed interesting enough to watch because the season just seemed to be a forgone conclusion from the outset. But with your documentary, and with superteams getting upset quite frequently in recent years, I am definitely going to watch more basketball. So thanks a lot, and for the love of GOD please never stop making this amazing content!

This is one of the best sport documentary I ever seen. No content from ESPN match the level of passion you showcase here. The way you introduce Steph Curry,going back to his father expansion draft pick to Charlotte, is simply, cinematic. And every bit of information is presented like that. I'll never forget that Curry's dad played for the Cavs. Kudos

The 1996 draft part is so interesting. Kobe's reps REALLY wanted him in a major media market, like LA or also New Jersey (the nets were really interested in him and played right by NYC at that point), so I wonder if he would've played for the Cavs had they picked him. Both Kobe and the Lakers were all about each other, so it seemed destined he'd play there, but, you have to wonder what could've happened had someone else picked him.

When people talk about how Jordan never faced any great teams, they leave out teams like the Cav's, who were supposed to beat them and be the next great team. I HATED the Cav's, they played the Bulls tough every game, and not dirty and physical like the Pistons, they played the Bulls tough just b/c of youthful talent. That entire team was stacked. They've been forgotten to time b/c of the greatness of those Bulls teams; and it's a shame b/c it was a team that should have been a dynasty if not for Jordan Pip Grant and Pax.
@angelusgnz5784

He didn’t. Who was the second best player on the Cavs? Was he on the level of pippen or prime Horace grant ? No. That narrative is indeed a true one. Name a player that jordan faced that was on the level of Steph Curry or Kevin Durant. It’s that simple.

@@angelusgnz5784 Here is someone that doesn't remember, or wasn't alive in that era. The Cavs were seen as the better team, and the next to Challenge the big 3, Lakers/Celts/Det, they had Daughtery, Ferry, Ehlo and Price, along w/solid bench play. It was the original MJ took it personally, next to no one had the Bulls winning that series, not even Chicago media.

Yes Cleveland could have drafted Kobe, but Kobe also said that he would only sign a contract and play for a certain handful of teams. It's the only reason he was drafted so low. A bunch of teams were to scared to waste a high draft pick. Kobe was such a G that he basically picked where he wanted to go and ending up getting what he wanted. The only reason the Hornets drafted him was because they already had a deal in place with the Lakers prior to the actual draft pick. Cleveland never had a chance at getting Kobe and the Hornets never had a chance keeping Kobe on the team. But they definitely could have drafted the other players you listed in Steve Nash, Peja, etc.

@JackassHill 2 года назад
@@Gpeagasus246 Yeah, Kobe wasn't going to play for anybody else. That draft was basically rigged. Even if he didn't go to Europe like he said, he would've been gone after his rookie deal. The reason they traded with the Hornets was to get Divac off the books and sign Shaq. Everybody knew how good Kobe was going into that draft, including the Hornets. A scout who played with Kobe said the 6ers wanted to draft him, and they had the 1st pick. The Divac trade made no sense when you re-visit the situation. If they were trying to win games, Divac wasn't going to bring much more than Geiger. They got swept in the 1st round of the '97 playoffs. Their GM said that getting Shaq out of the East had to do with it. Well that was stupid too, because the Magic just got swept by Chicago the previous year, and the Hornets were at best the 4th to 6th best team in the East. Their guards were Dell Curry (a 32 year old 6th man type) and Ricky Pierce, who was 37. Why wouldn't you keep Bryant? There was even talk of Bryant playing point guard coming out, and the Hornets just lost Kenny Anderson. They turned around and drafted Tony Delk, who languished in the back of the rotation, and got traded after his rookie year. The whole thing was incredibly stupid. And people hate LeBron for taking front offices out of the equation.
