Michael Mosley's final walk on rocky terrain before death on Greek island

Dr Michael Mosley chose to lie down on the mountain slope before losing consciousness, just a 90-second walk, or 79 metres, away from help, a coroner concluded.
With no signs of any external injuries, the way he was positioned suggests that Dr Mosley chose to lie down with his legs raised on a rock. There are no indications that he took a hit to the head or that he collapsed while walking, police sources said.

No he made the same mistake I did when I was 19. He left Pedi to get back to Symi Town which is a left turn in the middle of the horseshoe bit of town. But he didn't take this turn but walked around the horse shoe out of town. He was seen asking directions at a bus stop but he was probably told buses don't run in the afternoon as it is too hot. He reached the junction where the sign outside Pedi shows the route to Agia Marina. He took the left turn up the mountain thinking he could skirt the mountain and reach Symi town rather than having to turn back and retrace his steps back through Pedi. Remember he was already unwell when he left At Nikolaus beach at 1.30pm. He would have reached that sign about 2.15pm and reached the top of the mountain overlooking Agia Marina 2.30 or 2.45 latest. Look at his walking pace through Pedi. He walks quickly. But once at the top of the mountain I believe he tried to make his way for about half an hour to 45 mins to reach Symi Town over the mountain ridges. There is a window of 45 minutes to one hour of time missing. He was seen on CCTV leaving the marina at the end of Pedi at 2pm. So he should have reached Agia marina on the low route by 2.20 or 2.30 latest. But he didn't actually want to go to Agia marina but Symi town. He reaches a junction which says straight on Agia marina or there is a left path up the mountain which he thinks is a coastal route back to Symi town. When he realised it was going to take at least 3 hours and the heat from the rocks was overwhelming he turned back to reach the shade of Agia Marina. When I was 19, I reached Symi Town over the mountain route but it took 3 to 4 hours as it is arduous and slippy with shingle and shale track. I had a small bottle of water which I had already drank and I was completely burnt especially my arms and legs which blistered for days and exhausted by the time I arrived vowing never to go off without a nap and do a mountain walk again. I wasn't alone. I had a friend with me and we spurred each other on. My trainers were burnt on the soles due to the heat on the rocks and I could smell the soles burning and they kept sticking to other rocks as they burnt. I survived because I was young, very fit and had the company of a friend as we urged each other on. So he took what he thought was the route back to Symi Town when it's not. It is a long peninsular. He didn't have a phone so couldn't Google maps the route. He only arrived the night before and as he visited once 8 years prior felt he knew the island well. He should have had a phone, copious amounts of water and jelly babies. Jelly babies are pure sugar. He most likely didn't get the bus back as they have a siesta in the afternoon and don't always run. Similarly the taxis don't always run in the afternoon. The routes need to be better signposted for tourist with estimations of time and a map showing the way. Bus and boat timetables need updating. There wasn't a map at the junction where the route to Agia Marina. highlights a route up the mountain. When he expressed a feeling of being unwell at the beach one of his friends should have given him a phone although he was disinclined to use one. He had previously reversed type 2 Diabetes. That may have played a part but I don't think it did. I recall the 4 SAS men who died on Snowdon some years back while doing a fitness training in the mountains. It was a very hot day 32 but not nearly as hot as Greece. They died from heat exhaustion and dehydration. They were young fit men in their twenties and thirties. So to close, I don't think diabetes played any part. I think Michael was unwell and already suffering from heat exhaustion being on the beach all morning and when he left took the wrong turn, misjudged the route as I did and Mother Nature took no prisoners. May he rest in Peace and rise in Glory. The tragedy calls to mind the poem by W Shakespeare. The first and last lines are particularly resonant. (from Cymbeline) Fear no more the heat o’ the sun, Nor the furious winter’s rages; Thou thy worldly task hast done, Home art gone, and ta’en thy wages: Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust. Fear no more the frown o’ the great; Thou art past the tyrant’s stroke; Care no more to clothe and eat; To thee the reed is as the oak: The scepter, learning, physic, must All follow this, and come to dust. Fear no more the lightning flash, Nor the all-dreaded thunder stone; Fear not slander, censure rash; Thou hast finished joy and moan: All lovers young, all lovers must Consign to thee, and come to dust. No exorciser harm thee! Nor no witchcraft charm thee! Ghost unlaid forbear thee! Nothing ill come near thee! Quiet consummation have; And renownèd be thy grave!

I live on Symi, hike a lot and from careful observation I can tell you that Dr Mosley took the wrong path that added at least one hour of going up the hill, then down and around the fence, in the blistering heat. If you watch the video at 4:18, across from the cameraman, on the hill you can see the right path that leads at the sea, right where the boat is a little later . If he took the right path, he would be alive, the poor man. The people of this island are heartbroken, as I am. My deepest sympathy to his family.

I saw an interview with a reporter who saw the footage and he doesn’t mention that. He says he spent about 5 minutes unable to find a gap/gate in a fence, which could have been the gap we see the camera man step through before heading down towards the water. Which is sad because he was apparently just a 90s walk from the sea where he was found. He also said there was a small spring where he was found, and that Dr Mosely was say/lying with his legs elevated. I'd forgotten that he was found face up, with his legs raised. Does sound like he wasn't feeling well in himself - heatstroke/dehydration rather than a sudden heart attack. Wow, brilliant reporting, very moving. Gives an exact idea of the route, the viewpoint, the hideous terrain, and the effort being expended with every footstep. The young man doing the filming did not edit out his own panting. He had probably just come from that beach, very fresh. Mosely had come from 2 miles away, over the mountain top, and was probably five decades more ancient. Was he wearing sandals too? If so that scratchy wild sage and dry brush would destroy bare feet. To walk on that terrain you need proper sturdy boots which envelop and support the ankles. Tennis shoes entirely inappropriate.

Nobody knows the route he took. There are no footpaths to the North of Agia Marina. This is a climb not a walk on this type of terrain. The police want to wash their hands of the incident as quickly as possible for two reasons, 1. They looked at all the CCTV in the village but failed to check the camera at the Marina. 2. Their police dog failed to pick up the smell coming from a 5 day decomposing body literally yards away. The flies and local vermin had better instincts.

@charleswhite758 I find this interesting but I can't find photos of a little church. Greek Orthodox is the main religion which is different to Catholicism. Greece has links with the Bible and New Testament. There certainly have been many believers of Lord Jesus Christ over the centuries in Greece including Saint Paul. Apostle Paul who changed name from Saul. A place for Christian pilgrimages. So sad that Dr. Michael Mosley died so young. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, his work colleagues, fans and all who love him. I have never been to Greece and mostly know of it through Bible study. John of Patmos wrote the Book of Revelation. I just feel so sorry about Dr. Michael Mosley things don't add up. Had a sick feeling since hearing about it here in the UK. He hadn't yet reached 70 years old. 70 years is the "threescore years and ten" as mentioned in the Bible. It is unbelievably sad. "In the Steps of St. Paul" is a good book by H.V. Morton. God bless.

This tragic event is a salutary reminder for hill walkers to take extra care, especially on hot days. The air temperature was said to be well over 30C in Symi that day. But on such rocky, boulder strewn terrain, the amount of heat emanating from the ground by early afternoon must surely be quite considerable. So the actual air temperature on the hillsides could well be 10C, or perhaps more, above the reported air temperature? RIP Dr Mosley. So sad.

@courtneysquill8843

I think that is why he lay down and out his legs up. He felt faint. The wall also afforded a little shade at that time. He left his back pack on the path as he intended to get up and go on or so that someone would be alerted. He was too ill to cry for help. So he rested or fainted or slipped into unconsciousness. And he could even have been made more unwell if he had been bitten by mosquitoes which are numerous in Greece and some are known to carry West Nile Virus which can be fatal. If he fainted, he would have recovered shortly after when the weather cooled down and pressed on but he was so over heated by that stage he went beyond the point of no return.

This lines up with footage I’ve seen of someone else walking in the hills above Pedi where he starts to head down for what looks like a track in the valley below and just stumbles across a path, you literally couldn’t see it until he was right on top of it.

There's a signposted path to the resort at the top of the hill which he either didn't see or decided not to take... Their accommodation (a friend's house) is on the west of the island. The resort he was heading to is on the east. Maybe you can get a boat or water taxi from there, I don't know.

@@bawardWhat’s wrong with some folks? No one forced you to watch. However, many people are genuinely interested in how this could happen in 2024 and for the poor doctor to be so near yet so far from help! No one can really appreciate the rugged and steep terrain from distant views. I did think that when MM was first found that possibly he fell down one of the slopes and hit his head and never regained consciousness in the heat. Seeing this walk through has shown just how dangerous walking this way actually was.

Not withstanding the tragic loss of a wonderful doctor. I cant help thinking it was foolhardy to make that trip for whatever reason. Listening to the the panting in this video from a young fit guy sounds very arduous. He walked throught the first village didn't take on any water as far as we know. Wearing dark clothing that absorbs heat rather than reflect . A dark umbrella also absorbing heat. Bizarre

Why walk down the rocks when their is a path, he was found by path in a seated position up against wall and fence, close to beech and restaurant, so close to help, r.i.p 🎉
@robertbeaston5042

The "path" you refer to, is little more than a goat track. I've walked on terrain like this in Greece, in the heat, trust me, once heatstroke hits you, you go down hard and quickly, and I think he realised this as he stopped in a place that, at that time of the day, even being so close to safety, afforded him a little shade, and to prevent himself going into shock, raised his legs to get fluids into his torso. Unfortunately, my opinion, is it was too little, too late. Also the first thing that goes when you're dehydrated, is rational thinking, and it's easy to become disorientated. Watcing the video it's obvious how difficult the terrain is, and this is someone who hasn't just walked for 2 hours in it. All in all it was a very sad outcome.
