Cheating is almost certainly at an all time low and less impactful on baseball now than it has ever been. That said, I think it is still a problem.

If you think cheating is anything new then you don’t know the history of baseball… cheating is much less prevalent now due to modern technology and everything being watched and recorded so closely.

Essentially higher rates of ball rotation make better pitches and it’s super hard for pitchers to increase this naturally. By applying a super sticky substance on a pitchers fingers, the ball sticks to the tips for as long as possible and the grip from this goopy glue increases the spin rate. This spin doesn’t increase ball speed but it adds sharper darting movement relative to whatever pitch is being thrown. Batters used to be okay with pitchers using a bit of some foreign substance (like pine tar) because pitchers claimed it was for control (aka batters didn’t want to get hit by the ball so they let it slide lol), but if you look up the newer stuff that’s being used such as “Spider Tack,” you’ll see it’s this superglue like putty that was created for weightlifting strongmen competitions to keep a grip on giant boulders. Definitely not something that improves ball control, only ball spin. Quick rundown lol.

It's basically the difference between playing pool with a chalked cue vs a non chalked cue in a game where no chalk is allowed. It's a huge advantage. It makes for longer contact between the ball and the players fingers before it leaves. Exactly the same thing chalk does to a cues tip.
