In the newest available datamineable Quest 2 Kernel, we can see that Seabright, the uOLED Cambria version, is getting revisions! I compare this information with supply chain news and give an overlay to what it all means

@@mikeb3172 Depends on the technology at play. Within Micro OLED there are different ways of doing things. If I remember correctly, the Apara Micro-Oled has only White OLEDs which then pass through colour filters which is why it is relatively dim. But it's plausible to have a native RGB OLED.

@@SadlyItsBradley I am not 100% sure why Cambria (which is supposed to be a high-end device) would use mini-LED's. The rumors have been that they are working on uoled for the Quest 3 for next year but that doesn't track either since they will most likely want to keep the cheaper price for their mass consumer HMD. Unless Seabright really is Cambria and they do not intend to release it until the end of the year.
@NinetooNine
@NinetooNine 2 года назад
Actually, now that think about it it might be that they had originally intended to only have 1 headset the Quest 3. However, the more they added into it the more it became apparent they wouldn't be able hit the price point they wanted to. So they split the project into two. That might explain why SeaCliff is further along despite being planned to be released next year.
@SadlyItsBradley
@SadlyItsBradley 2 года назад
@@NinetooNine two MiniLED is still more expensive per device than a single panel that is used for Quest 2. Which is why I believe there are 2 Cambria SKUs. A source with some knowledge on the manner also believes there are two SKUs of the Cambria line being developed Quest 3 will likely not have uOLED at this point. Was probably a miscommunication of what device is next after Seacliff. Rather than Quest 2
@NinetooNine
@NinetooNine 2 года назад
@@SadlyItsBradley Do you think there is a possibility that SeaCliff could be a developer headset only? Since other than the displays, they are identical. A way for them to be able to ship something out to developers now since the supply issues with fabs are pretty bad right now. Maybe they couldn't produce enough uOLED's. Sounds farfetched even as I write it so maybe not.
@decantering

As someone who has been following your content for awhile (on RU-vid as well as Twitter), I think what you said at the end really sums up how I feel: I really hope that we get uOLED later this year in Cambria and I'd be willing to pay much more for it. It makes sense to have multiple tiers of products, and having a significantly better screen (uOLED @ 3k compared to miniLED @ 2k) could be a decent differentiator. Like others, I'd love to have a Valve headset instead, but (and this is just intuition more than anything) I just don't see them resolving their supply issues to ramp up production and launch the same time as Meta and Apple. Random guess here, but I'd say Valve's headset is further off in 2023 (at the earliest). I'd LOVE to be wrong though. Really looking forward to the Meta vs. Apple vs. Valve competition, it could only be good for us.

Super exciting. Cambria was on my to-buy list ever since i first heard about it in one of your leak videos, before the connect event, i have q2 now and it's pretty decent, but the small FOV and not amazing colors and blacks just leave a lot to be desired. With the micro oleds and hopefully much bigger fov in cambria (+ eye tracking which means foveated rendering so i hopefuly wont have to upgrade from the 3060ti to run it) it will be a truly amazing headset. Don't care that much for the AR side of it, but it could be pretty fun to say project your VRchat friends into your irl room with it. I just really hope the price tag will be under $1k, i can't really drop like 5 grand on it. God I want it so baaaaad.

As mentioned by another commenter, my main feature would be a cable that allows direct connection to Display Port, as soon as they mention "compression" that'll be it, not interested, what's the point of having fancy high res screens and optics if the compression will kill the benefits. The Quest-2 is a amazing device for it's "price" point, but the cambria will not be cheap, so expectations get set a lot higher.

q2 has basically no compression problems compared to q1 .....cambria will just have wifi6e ....wires are already dead we'll see if the Deckard has a dedicated hardware for wireless or just wifi6e

We don’t know Cambrian is going to have Wi-Fi 6e. Even if it does it still won’t be nearly as good as having a wire. From what I have read 6e has very short range and the body alone is enough to block the signal. While 6e will have less latency, it will still have latency, compressed graphics and mute colors. It would be a sin to have such a beautiful display only to be degraded by Wi-Fi.

I'd like to hear your take on when/where FOV improvements are going. The impression I'm getting is that miniaturizing is a much higher priority for HMD makers and increasing FOV right now would get in the way of that. Not to mention it would be a trade-off for PPD which I think getting to retina level is a higher priority for them as well. Once they have a near glasses form factor with retina displays I figure they would then focus their efforts on expanding FOV while maintaining those things. And hopefully by that time there's processing power on the market or 5G(+ a streaming solution) everywhere to drive the crazy high resolutions a jump in FOV would bring. That's my uninformed guess.
@SadlyItsBradley
@SadlyItsBradley 2 года назад
I think people will be surprised how much improved the clarity will be on these newer Prosumer HMDs compared to everything else we’ve had so far. But ya, there is a considerably large focus on getting clarity in a slimmer form factor than FoV. FoV is purely limited by optics tech at this point. And now that the clarity problem is being “fixed”, the sights will definitely be set on FoV improvement (and VAC) in future iterations, I’d guess

Very excited if it turns out that wasn't the case after all. Would love to hear confirmation that it had a more powerful SOC, Display POrt connection and at the very least WIFI6e 6ghz but preferably WIGIG2 60ghz. 2. Probably won't happen. These companies LOVE the login online to use your device and thus whenever there is a server issue the device will brick until servers come back up.

whatever gaben drops won't be subsidized like q2. I hate having to use fb account to use my quest 2, but i sure as hell won't pay $500 more to buy gabens similar specced headset over cambria just because it doesn't have fb account requirement.

@@mikesnapper9001 Nobody knows the price of Cambria or Valve's future HMD (assuming it happens). However, by all accounts it seems Cambria is meant to inhabit a much more premium price point than the Q2 for consumers, so I wouldn't assume it will be much cheaper than whatever Valve releases.

Zuck said cambria was a code name. So I was thinking how nice it would be if the device name were "Oculus" and phase out quest as a device name... The Oculus by Meta instead of Quest by Facebook.
@Superkia75

That would actually be smart. The Oculus would be the high end device, and the Quest would be the low-end.

If the new headsets are heavier, have noisy fans, and a darker output... I don't think that's good for the advancement of VR. The other things are good though.

I don’t expect them to be heavier at all. In fact I expect a huge difference in comfort/slimness. And due to the fact that all the pieces are coming closer to your face, center of gravity will be much improved

So in the upcoming VR space, “mini LED” is similar to QLED TV displays with a grid of backlights to improve contrast and black levels... and OLED is about the same. I wonder if VR tech will make use of the new R & G subpixel + blue backlight display - Linus Tech Tips did a video recently about Samsung’s new “QD OLED” display coming out with deep blacks, truer colors and higher brightness: “Samsung just made everything else OBSOLETE”💡

In Oculus Connect 5 presentation, Michael Abrash said that pancake lenses could either allow small form factor and 90°-100 FOV, or large form factor and up to 200° FOV. Do you think SeaCliff and SeaBright are those two form factors and FOVs?
@SadlyItsBradley
@SadlyItsBradley 2 года назад
Interesting. Never thought of it at that angle. But I think they are going with the first mention this time around for both devices. Reason being that supply chain says the MiniLED, which would be the “larger display model” seems to be around 2.1 inches diagonal reportedly? And I think even with that size, the FoV may possibly not soar too far past 100fov

I think it’s a bit funny. For VR oled is the bees knees but when Nintendo made the switch oled it’s seen as lazy (or at least I haven’t seen very positive response for it).

When it comes to VR the displays are a big deal. When it comes to a console the specs are the priority. Nintendo announced a screen revision when people wanted more processing power. Even then consumers still ate it up

I have had this question my entire life I hope you answer it 😅. Do VR companies share specs with each other before releasing their headsets? Because if one the company was able to come up with high technology with fair price while competitors provided like medium specs with high price, all other competitors will lose money because customers will can buy better specs with good money? Like if valve could came up with new chip that is 10 times faster than coming Cambria's chips and bring new technology that is not on cambria and there were huge difference and price is not very different meta would not sell their headset.
@SadlyItsBradley
@SadlyItsBradley 2 года назад
Absolutely not. Most of the industry’s secrecy about this stuff is mainly so their competitors don’t know what’s going on. They usually have to brace themselves and wait for pricing announcements especially. Companies will even have their own “corporate espionage” sectors of their company FOCUSED on what technology their competitor is likely using for their next products. I do it for free, though 🥲
