Midst is an audio drama in which three mischievous narrators spin a surreal, reality-bending, sci-fantasy, space western about a crotchety outlaw, a struggling cultist, and a diabolical bastard making awful decisions in a world on the edge of disaster.
Some themes and situations that occur in-show may be difficult for some to handle. If certain episodes or scenes become uncomfortable, we strongly suggest taking a break or skipping that particular episode.

Imelda "If I help three more old ladies across the street I can afford to torture a man into compliance" Goldfinch, everyone. When you can quantify the good you do, allowing you to "budget" for your evils, this is the logical final result.

This strongly reminded me of Father Gomez in His Dark Materials. (minor Spoilers) In that universe, members of the Magisterium (catholic church) are secretly permitted to enact preeemptory penance, committing themselves to punishment to prepare for "sins" that may be required of them in the future, notably the murder of a child for the preservation of their dogma. Basically, "Any premeditated wrong you may choose to commit is perfectly acceptable as long as you said sorry first exactly as much as we decide."

Weepe crying for Saskia while he's delirious from pain after how he betrayed and then left her on midst is so damn sad and ironic. Makes me wonder if Saskia knew of his condition or even helped him with it at some point in the past, maybe when he missed his syringe-time once. It totally lends more context to the S1E5 bit, where divine excitement flitted, unnoticed, across her face, while her machinations began taking form. I don’t know for certain, but I bet she saw Weepe, a brilliant, egotistical opportunist, and intuited two things: 1. He was remarkably capable and ruthless, if self-serving, and an ideal candidate for sucking into the Trust- so long as he thought it was his idea 2. How much of an asset to the Trust he could be- not just because of how myopically ardent he could be in the pursuit of Valor (for himself), but also- how much MORE he could be worth, if she found a way to… save… him, from the inside out.

What he says about survival is what he does best, taking opportunities when he sees them and making the most out of them. Hear me out... Trust is already known for having used tearrors as weapons. Do they want to... Weaponize him? This episode raised so many questions Also what's the connection between valor/caenum and the fold, because i just dont buy the idea of Weepe losing his temper like this solely for the reason of getting locked in a room. *_Jesus. Christ._* …yeah, I don’t think there’s any way Imelda’s going to survive this tale. It may not be soon, but one way or another I don’t see Weepe letting _any_ of what she just did slide. Who knows, he might even bring down the entire trust just to spite her “high level notarial mathematics”. Either that or her emotions just had an impact on whatever tearror was forming inside him and inadvertently converted him to her way of thinking. But I’ll be honest, I’m really hoping it’s the former and not the latter.

It speaks volumes that I had almost forgotten about Weepe's outburst by the end of the episode. Because to me Imelda's reaction to Weepe literally dying right infront of her was so much more disturbing. Many of us have been wondering for some time now who out of the two should worry us more. But Imelda actually believing the stuff she says and being actually convinced she's doing the right things, that settles it for me. I'm seriously worried about Moc Weepe now. Remember how in S2E1 the narrators described Imelda standing infront of a closed door (with the entire upper Trust waiting behind that door) with a "monster" beside her? Yeah. I really wonder what permanent effects this episode had on Weepe. I can't wait to see what happens next.

One of the most disturbing episodes in the show, from my point of view. Just... very unsettling as someone who doesn't put a lot of stock into religion irl, and so someone being obsessed with it is creepy to see. It also really reveals what the scene in the start of season 2 was, where Imelda was leading a monster into the Upper Trust meeting. The most dangerous villain is the one who is convinced they are in the right. It's unfortunate that Imelda is that villain. I'm so curious to see how she knew what she knew about Weepe and how Jonas might begin looking for a way out of the trust.

A couple points i found rather interesting: 1. Imelda’s comment on how /much more VALOROUS/ Weepe’s turn over of the Black Candle Cabaret could have been if he turned it in for the good of the good suggests that the Trust and its Notaries are responsible for reading a person and their intentions behind Valorous acts. Unless that’s just how good Imelda is at her job (or manipulation). 2. The fact that Imelda /calculated/ this exact move for the expected exchange of Caenum and Valor in her account is… INSANE. Right now, would it even matter though with how little value Valor even has? Is that what she meant by she calculated it?
@Mirrorfaced
@Mirrorfaced 2 месяца назад
Dude I didn't even catch that first thing, but that's WILD!! How /do/ notaries know what a deed is worth? I'm sure that's how she knew that Weepe's acquiescence at the very end was honest, or at least she thinks so, versus all his previous promises to be a Valorous little scamp fell on deaf ears. Imelda is freaking terrifying. Fun facts the appendix for this episode is a page from Imelda's notary prep school yearbook and that's just so fun

While I agree with you that in this situation Weepe got played, I feel like Imelda is still out off her depth. Yes Trust holds the cards, with having his med case and Un being the place Weepe is living in currently. But that forces him (like I assume many things before did) to much more advanced play. By no means I think he is all knowing or something. He make mistakes like everyone. He just plays chess compared to everyone else playing checkers. Its just at this moment Imelda is holding all the cards. She knows worth of those cards also. But she is a full on cultist. So similarly to Weepe she has a weakness to exploit.

One thing this episode revealed for sure is that Imelda is playing some kind of long game to reform the Trust in a direction she sees as less phoney and more devout. No hard evidence yet but I would not be surprised if what happened on Midst was absolutely part of that Grand Design. Think about it. Imelda must be a very high-ranking Trustee to have such privileged access to what is probably the single most important location to the Upper Trust. She may not be Loxley-tier but she's got to be something close... So why would such a big shot have been sent to do low-level missionary work on a backwater islet on the edge of the Fold in the first place? Surely that's a job you give to someone who's only just starting their climb up the ladder? It doesn't add up. I think what happened on Midst was a deliberate attempt to upset the status quo to create opportunities someone like her can exploit, and now she's got Weepe utterly compromised she can use him as her proxy too.

So far I have been leaning towards Imelda but kind of hoping for Weepe because he seems like the lesser evil (and ofcourse some main character bias). SPOILERS: As soon as the first twist of this episode hit, I thought it would be Imeldas win. I hope I'm wrong. I hope the brainwashing failed, and Weepe internally vowed revenge on Imelda and maybe even the trust. Because if is Imeldas win, then I think Imeldas calculations are exactly right. Weepe will be a great asset to the trust, and by my calculations, no longer the lesser evil.

Imelda has given me mad Dolores Umbridge vibes, this episode has solidified this for me. Doing anything for the "greater good".

I really wasn't too interested in Week's story, but after such a riveting edge-of-your-seat story and the previous episode's lore, I can say I'm invested into his story once again. Midst is amazing at pulling you into their stories and every single time before you know it you are already at the end of the episode.

What little part of my brain isn't in a chant of wtfwtfwtfwtf is fascinated by Sparr's incredulous surprise at every single sign of how ragingly insidious this cult he's in actually is. Like this guy has been on the front line of the very enforcement itself, not tucked behind a desk. The fact this is shocking to him on unprecedented levels makes me think this flavor of Trust is something new overall. Or maybe it's just no longer bothering to be so under the table about it. Or maybe it just took that hard of the slap that is Imelda Goldfinch to open his eyes.

Imelda is clearly a true-believer even by Upper Trust standards (she practically spells it out herself that most Valourous people are only Valourous for the sake of accruing Valour). As high-ranking as Spahr is, his role really seems to be that of a poster-boy for the Trust, and as a result he probably gets all the assignments that are "good for TV" so to speak, and probably spends most of his time off duty hob-knobbing with self-important blowhards who despite their hypocrisy are ultimately mostly harmless. So yeah, it doesn't surprise me that this is a side of the Trust he hasn't seen before and is shocked by. This is like taking the guy you put on recruitment posters to a CIA black site to watch someone get waterboarded.
@thetristan7391
@thetristan7391 6 месяцев назад
@@NinjaDeathSlap That's such a raw example LOL. I think that's a really good insight into Spahr's standing in the world, and I think it's enforced even further by the fact that he got strangled by Weepe, even behind bars. I love his sort of background arc, and how we get to see it in bits and pieces just because of how often he shows up in other people's business.

I am very much in shock right now, so many things in this episode absolutely rocked me. I gotta say though, to see that Imelda’s driving motivation is such a fervent deluded belief that every atrocity she’s committed is for the greater good, that Weepe’s torturing was on HIM and not her, not really, that the suffering of the masses of those without an ounce of Valor to their name is not caused by a malevolent and twisted system benefiting off of said suffering, but by the individual failings of poor misguided souls, is to know true fear. XD She is actually O’Brien from 1984 (Not to mention being a carbon copy of the delusion powering our own system of inequality) and that shit scares me more than anything. Well played Narrators, well played. :D✨✨

I saw 40min and tought... "this is going to be a fun one" +talking about the chapter+ Maybe i didnt understood Weepe right, but i tought he would endure it for longer. It looked like a smart man but he enraged really fast, didnt defend his character or his position not even a little! I knew Imelda was a weesle, maybe a snake, but she could not be so dumb and hold that much power. But even if Weepe got the valor for the wrong reasons, that was already accounted (as she said) and still is one of me most valorous people in the Trust, right? And she tortured and almost killed him? Phineas beating the sh%t out of a guy who escaped the Trust looks like an angel in comparision! I dont know wich math she did, but it doesnt feel like it should be that cheap.

I think what's crazy is that Imelda BELIEVES everything she is saying! Like she is not cheating the system she actually believes what she does is right!! I think Weepe thought she was more like him in that sense, that Imelda was just finding a way to use Weepe and he would cross that bridge when he would get there, but she is actually in so deep it is genuine religious fanatisicism. Makes it WAY more creepy!!!

The supplementary materials on this episode giving us some of Imelda's backstory was seriously great. I love that she's a go-getter. She seems like the type of person who will do anything necessary to get what she wants. Though what she wants might not necessarily be in the Trusts interests alone. I wonder what her end-game is...

OMG Weepe's actions had catched up to him! I'm very surprised that Imelda *does* believe she is doing good, despite the terrible things to do so. Now I two theories what is going to happen with him, He is either going to be complete puppet to the Trust now Or, he is going to murder all the Upper Trust in painful ways the moment he steps in that chamber of the first episode 🥶
