Mine Exploring
Continuing on from our last video where we got drenched to the point that even the weatherproof camera gave up, I decided to get up early and take a walk back to the 'valley of excitement'.
I knew whilst making the previous movie that we were missing out on more entrances, and having since been contacted by a viewer to continue our search of the area - I decided to go it alone and explore two more of the many remaining adits.
In this video, poor Gary was unable to join me as I go it alone and explore two more of the accessible entrances into the multiple workings of the impressively hushed valley. Always aware of the weather I try and locate and explore the remaining adits before the snow begins to fall.
The first explore of this valley (the one that I refer to in this video) is here: • WOW! What a MINE!

Thank you Maggie! I was just on planning some of 2021 but for now it looks like plans will have to change with this new full lockdown. It is a shame as I live in North Yorkshire so have been lucky enough to have had slightly less restrictive movement - but looks like we're all in the same boat now for a while. Oh well, back to my attic lol! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BipvT67sFk8.html

Thanks for sharing this Tom. Looks like a grim day but the mine entrances were really impressive.

Thanks! I had I look over the other side in the end and found an amazing mine shop with a really impressive run in (flooded) and several blocked entrances - unfortunately I didn't video further after coffee etc at the car.

It looks like quite a complex operation there doesn’t it? Have you got any suggestions where I could read more about it. I’ve tried looking from the upper end but it’s been a bit too claggy to get far.

We had a good explore, actually found a bit in nenthead hadn't seen before!. Like the arty opening shots. At least now I know where you are :) Careful of shafts hidden by show up there :) Wow, that floor in that mine is luxury!! Yes, I'm having massive issues with lens steaming up atm, even deep in mines.

I watched the vid and couldn't work out where your were! Been to loads of places up Nenthead years ago but not seen that area! Oh the lens steaming thing drives me up the shaft(wall), the Nikon died after the experience in Smallcleugh where we actually thought the mine was on fire because of the blue smoke that was everywhere in the mine (sensor was always misty after that). Always a problem in that the better the gear (move from plastic to magnesium), the longer it takes for the camera to warm up to suit the surroundings. The floor was beautiful, really flat and photos were a joy with a perfectly level surface (not having my tripod with me). The Hudeshope valley is a nightmare for open stopes in the snow, having lived up that way on I wouldn't ever walk on the moor in the winter as there are so many places that one could end up in real danger without knowing the true depth of the shafts that are now covered up with just grass and barbed wire. I actually watched a family of two adults and a young child walk over and into a bell pit just two days ago, not giving a second thought as to what they were standing in - hairs standing on end and I shouldn't laugh at it - but goodness sake!

Thank you! Sometimes it's difficult to weigh-up if the exploring is as exciting as the mining part?

I do most of my exploring alone, so know well that feeling of balancing risk versus reward. I get to some pretty remote places with no phone signal, where I think to myself, if ever anything happened to me.....I'd be knackered !! I'm in my 50's now, heart attack age, so it's a strange old feeling 😢. I always leave a note visible inside my car, with details of roughly where I am, and what time I set off and should be back, date, mobile number, etc, so at least I'd be found eventually......one way or the other (unless some bugger nick's my car !!) 😉. All the best for 2021 Tom and Gary 🙂. Cheers, Graeme.

Hi Graeme. I think the note thing in the car is a decent idea that I'll take up as it is quite frequent that we/I'm out and can't text my location to Seonaid in case of problems because of signal issues. The heart attack thing is something I also think about as I'm now 43 and I know that 45-65 is the 'danger years' - but having said this, as long as I'm not stranded yielding in agony for days on end with a broken hip or something then I'd rather go in a place that I love, on a mountain side in Teesdale or Weardale with only my memories to take care of me in the final hours. Goodness that was depressing writing! I quite like being up here on my own just about as much as being with Seonaid (doesn't appear on any video) or Gary - Favourite thing in the world is when the rain is pouring down, sat in a crevice in the rock or a mine entrance eating some tuna sandwiches after a long climb with a cup of hot coffee, with Daisy dog wondering if she can eat the ends of the bread. Yes, thats my favourite place to be. Thank you very much indeed for following my channel, I really do appreciate it and even without RU-vid I wish you the very best for 2021. Take care.

Hi Tom, you should get some Benylin chesty cough syrup, it's really good at helping get rid of the mucus, also try and drink as much water as you can as it loosens and thins the mucus to help you cough it up easier. You may have a chest infection hence the breathlessness so you may have to go to the doctors to get some steroids and antibiotics, please look after yourself. Happy new year to you and Gary, I hope 2021 will be an awesome year for the channel. xx 🙏💖

I think my cough is 'iron lung' or similar - I've always worked with manufacturing in steel so have been around a lot of dusty and oil smoke environments from being around 15 years old (my early work years was in a small company that H&S didn't exist). It is something I've had for many years that effects me day to day with too much talking on the phone to customers/in trade shows/heavy manual work etc and I don't think it is something I will ever now be without so I whine on about it but it is now just a thing that I'm used to. (it's not Covid19 lol! - [hopefully!]) Thanks for your care and and advice though, I do appreciate it. Take care!

@@MineExploration I have COPD so I know what you're going through, have you ever tried salt therapy ???, it has really helped my lungs a lot, no more wheezing and I can take deep breaths again. Here is a link for you to read, www.salttherapyassociation.org/benefits-of-salt-therapy I recommend buying Salitair products though as they are the best in my opinion. www.amazon.co.uk/Salitair-Additional-Therapy-Inhaler-Allergies/dp/B004VRB64W/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=1TCY54K03465K&dchild=1&keywords=salitair+salt+inhaler&qid=1609455736&sprefix=salitair%2Caps%2C159&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&smid=A219V990HLT302&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyRjUxQTJZWFhPNDJUJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUExMDA0MTY2MTlPWEJBV0dCNzZYNyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNDYyODI0MUhHMFdKMEw5TUlGMyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= Happy new year. xx

Hi Tom, I am on my third hybrid car and i do not find them any different in winter than any other car, when they do lose grip the traction control just takes over, thats my experience with them, thanks for the video.

Hi Michael, in all fairness the Nero isn't too bad apart from the usual spinning of one wheel on soft surfaces(typical diff reaction). My previous car was a new shape Panda 4x4 which really was superb in the winter- only changed it because of reliability issues within less than 1 year old and I'm trying to be more environment aware. Nero is quite good at 64mpg as an average but still when the snow falls it can struggle to climb steep hills that the Panda would have eaten with the diff lock engaged. Happy with hybrid though and would 100% get another. Thanks for watching!! Have a great new year 😁
