During this fight, I had Jaheira throw Boo in Sarevok's face and the space hamster managed to kill him. It felt like the greatest conclusion possible for the old characters from BG 1/2.
Giving Minsc the sword of chaos is really funny to me because that’s what he used for most of my BG2 playthrough, so I just imagine him going “Ah, yes, my great weapon returns! How did Sarevok steal this from Minsc?”
Sarevok's voice is FUCKING insane. I imagine the reason Jaheira and Minsc didn't say anything before he adressed them was because they wanted to listen his saultry tones.
I can not imagine how Karlah would survive this moment - Minsk, Jaheira and Baal's spawn are about to kill Sarevok and she could do it with her. She would probably die from heart attack, but still, it would be the best moment of her life XD
Look at it this way. They went with the evil ending of Sarevok. I do however wish good Sarevok was the Canon they went with. Mincs, Jaheira Sarevok Party would have been awesome.
His (possible) reformation where he (maybe) managed to get Chaotic Good alignment (in some playthroughs, but usually just the ones that played with a guide, because it required some pretty specific dialogue choices, and most good-aligned player characters wouldn't likely keep him in the party anyway).
@@OneTrueNobody Except in canon that even BG3 acknowledged, Gordion's ward was a good guy so he would follow the reformation path the way it lead to him to reformation. Larian simply didn't like the idea of it and retconned it by making Sarevok suddenly abandon every lesson he learned and become a dog on a leash to a failing god whome he already saw as weak in BG1 let alone BG2, but now he is his greatest fan.
I felt so bad when I didn't bring either Jaheira or Minsc (or Boo) to this encounter. I had no idea the murder trial would feature Sarevok plus I was too eager to push the story along on my first run. I did put them on my team the instant I got them in my second play-through and kept them active until Orin was defeated. But even after that, I ended up using them the most out of all companions. Didn't quite manage to kill the Elder Brain with a Boo-throw, but I did try.. :D They're just so entertaining to have around - especially Minsc is. I wish both would make their appearance earlier in the game, but I guess they're now relegated to being supporting characters. Time for a BG1 and BG2 remake with BG3 technology!
I suggest putting Minsc in your party with Astarion and heading toHeapside Strand waypoint. Head down the stairs and you should trigger a funny bit of banter between them.
You're the 2nd person whose said that. Why? For me, he gets Lilarcor almost immediately and carries it pretty much through the end of at least SoA, if not ToB.
If you kill the Echoes, he gains powerful permanent buffs including immunity to Hold Person. Best strategy is to stun or polymorph the Echoes before unloading on Sarevok.
Huh, interesting, because Sarevok in my playthrough literally can't be restrained. He either gets the saving throw and frees himself, gets hastened or one of his minions help him and that after casting hold person at least 4 times to actually succeed in holding him. Either i'm casting with the wrong characters (Minthara/Shadowheart) or Larian patched this strategy.
They patched it. In my file I did manage to make it stick for one round but he shook it off. Also I think it depends on where you fight him too, it's easier in the throne room and harder when you wait until he's in the sacrifice room
@@yakuzajoe At that point your party should be lvl 12 already which makes the fight a non-eventful one in most cases. My first ever Baldurs Gate/DND playthrough without min maxing I easily smacked him in turn 3 on tactician while making a couple mistakes (not hasting my spellcaster, getting counter spelled on a very potent debuff and not killing Sarevok before the ghost pit sanctuary on him), my partys total HP loss was around 40 iirc.
I never played the OG game but i recognised him immediately from that helmet, my Dad had the original games and he was on one of the covers and was in the opening cinematic and I remember it so clearly because he terrified me from the opening Cinematic
Part of me is happy that I saw Sarevok once again but mine heart is sad that mine trying to give him redenption arc by talking with him and changing his character from neutral evil to chaotic good was... For nothing. I was hopeing that I wont see him once again not as enemy but as potencial allay.
worse what you did worked but it was a cats paw. baal had one last trick up his sleave. last living baalspawn becomes baal by force. sadly abden was last and guess who shares a soul with him. savarok. if it wasnt abden he probably would have been fine
That's just RPG sequels for you. There can be a dozen or more different endings to a game but it's sequel can only choose *a single one* of them to be the canon one that continues the story. That's just one of the cons of RPGs and a pro of linear stories like TLOU. It is what it is.
@@Karlach_ you want a good example of that just look at mass effect. they literly didnt know how to end the game, while for a fallow up game they didnt even try to fallow up on what actualy happen and just straight up left the galexy. while the sequal that is currently in development it seems like they took the 500+ year route aka its been so long all the endings except for the worst kinda just become the same as so much time passed
@@Karlach_ I mean, it's not really Baldur's Gate though, is it? They could've just not brought him back at all, since his story was finished. What I think Larian *should've* done, if they were going to steal the Baldur's Gate name, is to center BG3 around Imoen; center the game around her journey, since she really didn't have one in BG1/2, and bring back a few characters who had room to grow, like Anomen or Mazzy. Bringing back Minsc, Jaheira, Sarevok... in story there's no reason to do that, they did that just to try to give some legitimacy to the "Baldur's Gate" title they gave to their D&D game.
I didn't know Sarevok was in the game and just happen to wander around with these two since they're act 3 only companions I got chills when I saw him and seeing my party talking shit Its like being a kid again
i was streaming this game for a few friends and although i didnt get minsc because jaheira died in act 2, when i reached this part of the game i was like NO WAY, IS THAT HIM IS THAT SAREVOK? and my friends had no clue who the hell he was. they have never played bg1 or 2 so i had to tell them why i was so excited.
I hadn't played the previous games and had no idea what I was in for when I found this place. I was feeling pretty tough by now at max level with some decent gear. Then I found this mofo with his ability sheet full of 20's and his chunky AC. I was sweating when my character was desperately lying through the encounter because I was sure this dude who's vocal chords were made of subwoofer was going to get mad and start one shotting people.
I remember approaching his chambers after the Knights and being super giddy because I could feel Sarevok's presence as I approached. It was a feeling of "heh, I can't wait to show you what's up again.
I don't think they should have brought Sarevok back. He was freed from Bhaal's essence when he died. He could have chosen his own path after he was resurrected. Throne of Bhaal also took place 100 years before Bhaal returned. And everyone thought that Bhaal was permanently dead after ToB. Plus even if Sarevok remained evil, I don't know if he would have returned to Bhaal. He never really worshiped Bhaal in the first place. He didn't want to become Bhaal's champion, he wanted to become a god himself. I think Sarevok would be too ambitious to chase after the favor of Bhaal, who is barely even a god after his return. I think Sarevok would have grander plans.
I don't think Sarevok had much of a choice. He was brought back by a small amount of Bhaal's essence (from either Gorion's Ward or Imoen) So when Bhaal came back, he took control of that essence, and Sarevok along with it.
@@xaviervega468 worst part it was abden who became baal. yes it was by force because of a hidden claus but he still became baal and guess who shares a soul with him. saravok hell im prity sure he did go good for a while. dude got a family and everything after all. then he went evil and preceded to corrupt and turn them mad for his brother.
Sarevok returned to Bhaal because he was trying to reclaim whatever power he had during the event's of BG1 and that was (realistically) his way to do so
Not that I dislike Matt Mercer, I like him, and he did a great job in BG3. But Jim Cummings is still alive as well. Would have been awesome for him to return for Minsc.
@@stormsavant Viconia, Sarevok, Jaheira, Minsc, the Five. None of the original voice actors return in the game. Mercer's was the only decent performance here.
@@Nihilmace- The problem is this IS THE Original Version of Sarevok no matter if you like it or not. WoTC made an official cannon that Larian followed, or rather was forced to follow because of the IP. Bioware doesnt have a slightest say or Larian in it.
I would've been elated if those three mentioned Gorion's Ward while talking about the past events of BG1 and 2. Not a direct mention, just something like "your brother" or "our long-lost companion"... Nevertheless, it's nice to see that Larian kept a memento of the old games!
This is a really cool call back but at the same time it makes no sense for Sarevok to be there and in any way shape or form on Baal's good graces. Not only was Sarevok actively trying to do anything to be the new god of murder meaning he had full plans to betray Baal, he also lost. When he was killed in BG1 the part of him that was Baalspawn was removed from his soul (He even tells the player character this in BG:II Throne of Baal). In that game the player can choose to resurrect Sarevok and if done so he becomes a companion for the game, and then depending on how the player operates in the game it opens Sarevok's mind and he actually has a morality change. So to see him here while cool and all makes no sense to me, I would rather have seen him make a guest apperance in the temple of Baal as a temporary companion, challenging his 'father' and fighting with the player character in that one, and maybe even becoming a companion in the group which would have been a lot more interesting at least to me.
sarevok probably had the canon good ending but it was a cats paw ending because abden becomes baal by force. they share a soul thus hes drag to hell with him. viconia probably did as well but the none romanced one, the one where she dosnt fully leave shar. the actual evil one has her end up dead in a ditch, while the good one if it happened would also have her end up dead as she would have been with abden when he transformed. so they picked the neutral option as thats the only one where she would be alive in. problem is thats a path of doom. congrajulation viconia you got redemption but you just went from one abuser to another expecting everything to be hunky dory. na shars going to play with you like a fiddle till she breaks you and turns you back into the monster you just beat. she like anyone who prey to the more evil aligned gods are just fucking ideots who get what coming to them if they chose to stay. this is all on viconia. so smart, but also so dumb
Meeting Sarevok for the first time was one of the few moments I was casually playing and had to sit the fuck up from serious interest. The atmosphere, how it goes from kinda dank little cave to an immediate shift into terror from the short time it takes to get to the Tribunal room. The bloody ghost aspects who are all crazy females and crazy passive effects on Death. Like I figured it would be more doppledangers not the fames previous MAIN antagonist holy shit. I read the aspect details and managed to aoe two on accident....holy shit not a good time. I think they should have naturally gave him the aspect buffs, because I think that is a truly peak and potentially challenging fight, while also staying true to how great of a fighter he is. The characer screams "Danger" from before you even get into the room all the way and his Frenzy roar was awesome. I know for a fact a good amount of people who met this dude took the camera and panned to him like "👀 who tf...oh shit". Tbh, he is the reason I started using Karlach because I think the Frenzy screams are badass. I wasnt ready for his Deathbringer assault and he instantly killed one of my companions, while healing and then smacking tf out of someone else after my friend died. He had me genuinely shook my first playthrough bc I was doing it all blind with no previous knowledge on how to use everything correctly. Man that fight music was awesome too. Besides Cazador and Orin who I think have the same song, this fight was top of the list for me for setting and music. I stumbled into this on accident not knowing the history of these three but instantly remembered the few times they did mention him and was like wait..."this is the mf you guys talkin about? we gotta gtf outta here NOW!!!* . Like the moment I met the Paladins waiting at the door, I was scared. How they just straight up ask for tribute and tell you if its not good enough all 3 of his mates will rend you flesh from bone. I was MORE scared of them at first because Paladins can absolutely turn a fight around with a smite and they had a shit ton of HP. I never heard his VA nor do I care to compare, I think Wylls by far got the absolutely lamest and cringiest shit to say. Anchev had me with the introduction. I think he is a great character, and they made him visually look pretty damn awesome looking at his old art. "You gaze upon Murders Progeny... child" idk that shit just went super hard to me. 😂 Me: "huh?? I am just looking to trade 😢"
When you think about it, Gortash is basically pulling Sareviok 2.0, orchestrating a war and killing the leadership of the city to make himself the center of the defense effort and end up in control of everything.
Got to replay this on tactician, playing on normal several bosses didn’t get to attack because I had too many option to stun lock them. Though it might be ideal that they don’t get a turn if they’re anything like Raphael who killed Hope when he got a turn. The solution ended up being a hastened monk punching each pillar once with radiant fists to essentially silence him until the cambions were cleaned up.
This fight, is actually a lot of fun. Other than the fact he is hard af to hit after killing his sanctuary minions, no matter, the fight is awesome. I’m a noob and just pop an Invuln orb, with bless and spirit guardians, keep him at the edge of the orb and just wail on him lol…
For some grandaddy old age worshipper of the god of murder, he sure likes to hear his own voice. Surely he skilled into the pretentious bard class over the years. Less talking more killing. Bhaal would approve, probably already having a headache with all this exposition dump going on and Orin not being able to shut up and kill people. Well, nothing Hunger of Hadar can't fix. Thanks for the video though. Lovely to see Larian implement Minsc and Jaheira well.
Ahhhh, Sarevok liked to talk in the original game, too. His plan for murder involved taking a position of political power in the city, after all. It was really only once he was backed into a corner that he got down to business and, even then, it was the trap-ridden arena where the final boss took place that was the real threat. That and, well, the fact that he came at you with a full party of allies. ...I did not fight fair. I Skull Trapped him and his party into little bitty pieces because I was playing the Enhanced Edition, which makes that a valid tactic.
Statistic data taken from other RPGs have shown that the majority of players try to be "good" compared to "evil". And I'm pretty certain that every single person playing the older Baldur's Gate and trying to be good at least attempted to redeem Sarevok, so I find it a little bit strange that they chose to make his canon outcome not being redeemed.
At the same time; not that many people who like playing pure good campaigns would have Sarevok to begin with. Even if u did, it wasnt that easy to get him to be chaotic good (required some specific dialogue choices). So i guess its not that strange either
@@mizu7662 Viconia only gets redeemed if you romance her in BG2. Her leading a Shar enclave is what happens if you don't romance her, which is what is referenced in BG3. This is kind of expected though. There isn't a canon romance for BG2.
Sorry but villains like Sarevok don't deserve redemption, you can't "fix" everyone, just because the game allows you to do things one way, don't mean your favorite path is the canon one, Silent Hills canon ending is that to me
After seeing Sav i did this step back to confront three, too. The fight feels right, but this also means the kidnapped companion will be killed by orin :/ ...so, tried also the bad path...But i was a bit disapointed about the weak reaction of all other companions... yea, they comment that very questionable, but i was sure at least 1 another will leave the camp if u choosed to sacrifice both... and not enough... i even carried their bodies to Jahieras home... Kids dont react (and, of course, this was just a test for reaction and not the path i stayed on - reload the won fight ;) !)
@@elenalizabeth Attack Orin during her monologue, before she ritually kills your companion (you can always attack during a hostile conversation, which I think is a great way to punish over-dramatic enemies ;))
@@SlayerOfMadness I want to get that achievement for killing her (kill her while they are chanting or something?) as I’ve gotten the one for Myrkle, the spider matriarch, the surgeon, toll collector, etc.
@@elenalizabeth Yeah, I got this achievement when I attacked Orin during dialogue. I did however kill her in the first or second turn (evocation magic missles are just special)
Do her act 3 quest, there's a hidden room in her house, inside that hidden room is yet another hidden room, gives you that scimitar, a nice stun on hit staff and a +1 wisdom helm
@@redchaos98 In my game I pretty much always make her a "Cleric/Ranger" now - functionally that's what a Druid is, but Cleric/Ranger is really powerful while Druid is a fucking terrible shit class in BG - so she can't wield bladed weapons. I typically give the the Flail of Ages. And the Mace of Disruption for fighting vampires. (I tweak a few other things too: some are obvious, like how Anomen should become a Paladin - although Fighter/Cleric is useful too, so not always; Mazzy should DEFINITELY be a Paladin - I much prefer 2.5e rules to 3, but the race/class restrictions in 2.5e is bullshit, the dual/multi-class nuances are cool but again, the restrictions are bullshit; and obviously Minsc should be a Barbarian, or at least Berserker... Nalia being mage/thief makes some sense, but she feels like a replacement for Imoen, so I like to make her an Archer. It's a really useful class, it makes sense to me that she would pick up archery and some tracking/ranger skills living in a castle in the wilderness, and the most obvious Favored Enemy of all time: Trolls.)
I quite don‘t understand how he can be alive after 100 years. Necromany rituals? Because he was a Chosen of Bhaal even if Bhaal just a quite deity or because a part of his soul is in him?
@@Lily_OrchardThe information has been there for a while now, plus these are evil characters, should that be their canon ending, this makes no sense, would you like it If a good character turned up with the opposite alignement change just because they were fan favorites of evil players, let evil characters be evil
As it turns out, Seravok was right. There ARE only two ways in. In this case it just so happened that Saravok was the flesh into which the parties devotion was carved.\
The echos are weird. Not sure why Amellyssan is an echo. She's not even a Bhaalspawn, and she betrayed Bhaal anyway. She's a normal human priestess of Bhaal who tried to steal his power for herself.
@@RG32822 Sendai and Ilasera makes sense. Amellyssan on the other hand shouldn't be there. Her soul was annhilated when she welded it to Bhaal's taint.
Hurts my heart knowing they didn't get Kevin Michael Richardson to do the voice of Sarevok. Losing David Warner last Summer means no cameos from him either. Sigh.
As someone who did play the originals this is a terrible downgrade. The original voice was so fucking good and this sounds very awkward and like a cartoon villain.
Can anyone tell me if you can get the vendor to spawn if you dont align with Sarevok? Even as an enemy so I can knock him out and steal all his stuff. I would rather keep Jaheira and Minsc but he has some very useful items for my Gloomstalker/Assassin PC.
Imma be honest After watching a friend absolutely clown Sarevok with damn near nothing except for Astarion with a paralysis amulet and 4 ghouls...he lost a lot of his intimidation factor
I love how everyone knows Minsc is an idiot even the bad guys. I wish they had a line for jaheira about Minsc being an idiot who killed Baals supposed number 1 guy, proving sarevok is a complete loser
Between this and Viconia I wonder why even bring back these characters if you're only going to undo the character growth that made them cool characters
@@ChristhegreatbroYou would have a point If Jaheira and Minsc were also treated like this, both Sarevok and Viconia are evil aligned characters from the start, they always were going to go down the evil path, you can't "fix" them
@@Christhegreatbro the good and bad take at the same time. The thing you said is true, but Larian followed WoTC cannon which they had to if they wanted to create a game from their IP.
so evil people cannot be slowly changed over the course of two games and many events? Minsc was brought back as pure fan service but was still true to Minsc ill give you that , Jahiera was also done really well , so you are absolutely correct there. I wouldent have to big of a problem with Vicy coming back evil , she sort of has little choice in the matter when it comes to service of her evil god , But she behaves like she hasent changed at all and that shes happily willingly a slave of her god , which just kind of feels cheap. I would have loved to see her being a more damaged , jaded Drow then the one we knew from BG1,2 Saeravok is just embarrassing , they grabbed the main villain of the 1st game and cheapened him by making him a barely important throw away boss and a giant simp to Bhaal , its a massive disservice to a pretty solid villain . I thought him turning good was something that made sense considering Abdel crushed all his dreams and he is a fragment of Abdel anyway. I just look at the whole situation there and ask myself..."Why did they have to bring him back if just for that" It made him look weak and it felt like a giant fan service to have him back just to fight him again with Jaheira and Minsc by your side. I am also well aware that these are things WoTC have written in their canon long ago , that does not make it any less crappy@@MrNoot39449
This cofrontation is rather unimpressive, just like Viconia's maybe even worse. Sarevok is more than a two bit miniboss, even if he did fuck up and failed Bhaal in the past. The dialogue does more justice to him than the plot.
