Enjoyed the review especially close to home for me. Just had the Mizuno fitting yesterday ( Aust ) and had my heart set on the Pros but walked out with an order for the JPX Hot Metal - HL’s. I’m 62 with a seven iron swing speed average of 76 mph. I could not believe how easy they were to hit and with the Neo stiff pro shaft managed a very central heat signature on the club face where before I was a consistent toe striker. Three week wait now but couldn’t agree more with your review since I’ve just had that very experience 👍🏻🇦🇺

Great review - thank you. Just had a club fitting today for new irons. I’ve come away with a set of Mizuno 923 HMP. I was expecting to be directed to the new Mizuno HL. But HMP seemed to get the best results. I’m 64, handicap at 8. Swing speed around 80mph with 7 iron. What still amazes me is the difference the right shaft can make.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Год назад
Hi William, at 80 mph you'd be slightly outside the speed for the HL to have more functional carry distance, although the HL still may give more height. What's most important is that you get the best irons for you, if the fitting is good and you are happy then every box has been ticked. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

Next year or this year? 😊 That's going to catch me out for a while 😊 it's a nice upgrade to make. If you were looking at the differences between 921 and 923 HM it would be minimal but going to the Forged, there will be a pleasant change in feel and looks and also a bit more consistency from nominal striking 👍

I absolutely love your club testing videos. I am in the market for my next set of irons due to my handicap dropping into the single digits and am looking for an increase in launch angle and additional spin. At 64 yrs old, my 7 iron swing speed in ~81. Would it be possible to test at a similar swing speed. I don't think the majority of viewers swing at 90+ mph and it would certainly help us average joe golfers make an informed decision on our next set of clubs. Thanks again and keep the great reviews coming!!

Get a Mizuno fitting with Mizuno DNA to get what is best for you. I’m 65 and play 921 hot metals with graphite Recoil ESX F3 (regular flex). I switched from 919 forged with project x LZ 5.5 steel shafts. I like the lighter Recoil shafts. I get good launch and distance with control and stopping power (I actually have enough spin to stop a ball on green with less than 2 feet roll out).

Great review! Love me some Mizunos…I am a little bummed that many RU-vidrs reviewing these aren’t using the speeds they are intended for (the HL specifically). Having someone with a 90+ mph 7 iron swing for comparison is pretty useless for the HL…I’m also a bit bummed people keep referring to them as super game improvement clubs (with the connotation they are for high handicappers/not very good swingers). From watching the Mizuno videos from Mizuno, my understanding for the HL is for better players who may have lost some swing speed over the years and don’t want to go to hybrids throughout the bag. The biggest difference with the HL is they didn’t move the CG as low as possible like the other 923s, because the target audience has slower speed and more forward shaft lean (e.g., better players who have lost swing speed). That’s key because with forward shaft lean, you don’t hit the ball off the bottom of the club face (as your dots indicate). You hit them closer to center on the face. So, traditional game improvement irons that move the CG lower don’t really help the better players who have lost some swing speed since you’re hitting it where the CG isn’t…

Really interesting video, thank you. I’m sure I’m not alone in being overwhelmed by facts and figures, all interesting stuff for a club fitting but for the average golfer I’m sure it’s comparatively meaningless. I’ll be changing irons next spring (13 handicapper at the moment) and what I’d like to be able to see is something that says out the middle the club hits a ball X yards, an 1/2 inch off centre hit drops the distance by y yards, it’s a high/medium/low spinning club and so on. Also, to hear that a club is suited to golfers in a handicap range of a to b, and when you get 3 new clubs like in this review to say where the handicap ranges if each club overlap.To be fair, every channel reviewer on You Tube does much the same, but I find myself getting to the end with no real concise thoughts, just numbers and degrees bouncing around in my head.

Good to see you back and a great review 👍🏻 From those numbers I question whether the HL works, 2deg more dynamic loft but only 1deg of launch. I would like to see HM and the HL tested at the same loft. They all seem very forgiving.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Год назад
Rounding the two with the same loft (HM and HM Pro) at 19 degrees and then the HL is about 1.5 degrees more launch. Launch always lags behind dynamic loft so there's always a non linear increase in launch as loft increases. But the added 1.5 degrees and the nearly extra 1k spin sure makes for a high flying iron. Definitely something that I'll be utilising in custom fittings going forward 👍

Probably best comparing the 225 and the HM Pro. The lines are possibly the closest. Although as you say the lofts aren't quite in line. If you want additional help then the JPX should win, but if you wanted looks closer to the 221 as that is important to many, then obs the 225 will be the choice. 👍

@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Год назад
Hi Larry, I guess if all depends on what you are looking for. If it's a profound distance gain then no, there is a small distance gain but that is mainly due to the loft change, although it's done with retaining peak heights etc so effectively free distance. But the main thing is the audible strike is softer with the newer model. That one is absolutely subjective so you'd have to determine that one for yourself 👍

They missed the opportunity the change the Hot Metal Pro to something that will be purchased - it's a real shame. I'm a 919 Hot Metal Pro iron set player, but I've bent the lofts weaker -> (PW, 9, 8, 7,6) -> (47,42,37,32,28) - the key being a 32-degree 7-iron (modern standard only slightly strong) but also having a 'normal' 47-degree PW which I love having to make the set playable & gap properly into a normal bag construction. Please Mizuno, if you read this, please for the love of god, give us a set of lofts, in a Hot Metal Pro (love the lack of offset) that are (47,42,37,32,28,24). The reason I think this is so important is all that has happened is the new 923 Hot Metal (slightly strong lofted ) 7 iron has now become 6 iron at 28.5 degrees - what's the f'ing point? I'm a scratch player, had my lofts and lies done at TXG in Toronto as I basically live next door to them - and my (47,42,37,32,28,24) is a perfect bag of lofts that frees up a club to add another hybrid/wood/wedge to help your game. Why as a scratch player do I play the Hot Metal Pros? Bent weaker they have near zero offset and they are deadly accurate, given their stability frame, which from a Strokes Gained perspective is what golf is all about. I switch out the 24-degree 5-iron to an HMB because I do not like seeing the back of the club. The new high launch clubs will be the big sellers - and hopefully, that will convince the designers that they long ago jumped the shark. I don't want to even mention that the new JPX 232 Forged has a 7-iron now stronger than 32-degrees because I will just get upset. Can we please standardize on a 32-degree 7-iron as being that perfect combo of modern lofts meets modern construction - but we still need to build a bag of clubs that hit certain distances? Make 32-Degrees Great Again - otherwise, I will need to purchase clubs from another manufacturer.
@Cavestyle
@Cavestyle Год назад
I believe Mizuno sees the Hot Metal Pro and Forged as almost the "same", in terms of which players/handicaps should use them. If you're a scratch golfer and need the distance boost, get Hot Metal Pro. If you're a scratch golfer and distance is no concern, get Forged. That's my theory of how they think about the two offerings
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Год назад
Hi Paul, that comment took nearly as long for me go read than to make the video 😂 but yes you make some good points there and something I wish manufacturers would return to sensible times past.
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil Год назад
@@Cavestyle Paul Casey carries two Hot Metal Pro 4s bent to two different lofts (basically his 4 & 3 irons) so these are useful clubs even to Pros. What isn't useful is a 7-iron with a 28.5-degree loft with nearly zero offset. Who is the desired market - a low handicapper that wants for vanity reasons to carry a 7-iron 195 yards? That implies the 9-iron is a 170 carry club & PW is 155. Most Pros don't like to swing wedges at full speed & 50-degree wedges are usually max 125 clubs - maybe 130 if you need to go at it - and thus the problem - all you've done in reality is you need a 2nd Gap wedge because you've called your 6-iron a 7-iron so why bother in the first place - it's just stupidity.
@shansen008
@shansen008 Год назад
I just received these yesterday, cant wait to play them. Confused though, if youre a scratch golfer and want weaker lofts, then why not just go forged or tour? HM and HM pro are GI irons.
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil Год назад
@@shansen008 For two reasons: 1) because the numbers don't lie and the Hot Metal Pros are simply more stable and accurate and, 2) my desire to construct a set of 6 irons, that covers the traditional lofts of a 7iron set of 47-degree PW to 24-degree 4 iron. This further combines with my delivery mechanics which is a very forward handle delivery / de-lofter (I was an ice hockey player) and bending stronger lofted clubs weaker adds more bounce which very much works for my delivery - coincidentally, there are a few PGA Tour players which do similar and take a 24-degree TS100 4-iron and bend it to 27 degrees and use it as their 5 iron because of their delivery mechanics. Basically, this is now impossible to do because the lofts have been juiced so much - except for the fact that because they have been moved to crazy levels, you can now just order the clubs 1/2" longer and thus make your 8-iron a 7-iron because the 8-iron is 33 degrees - so basically it has now come full circle and they've done nothing except change the numbers on the bottom of the club - so what was the f'ing point?

the idea that youre hitting a 7 iron 180 is ridiculous. the lofts are jacked nearly 1.5 clubs. youre hitting a 5.5 iron not a 7. i play wilson staff forged, older. traditional lofts. the 5 in that set is 27 degrees and i hit it 195...the 7 iron in these jpx are 28.5 degrees. its a joke. theyre not going any further then traditional clubs, based on LOFT, which is all that matters.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Год назад
Hi Todd, the idea of modern distance irons are not really (although always sold on distance which is wrong in my opinion) designed for the golfer to have an identical 7 or 5 iron swap out, but more so having correct gapping for lower swingers. If a slower swinging golfer used traditional irons the loft gaps would be too small and they would have a very small distance gap between each iron. Traditionally lofted irons are designed for people that have the speed to use the 4 degree increments/decrements and have sensible distance gapping of 10-13 yards. The slower swingers needs the distance irons to have the 5 or 6 degree sometimes loft gaps which gives them sensible gapping. Unfortunately it's poor marketing that focuses on raw distance rather than what these types of irons are designed for. Launch help, forgiveness and sensible distance gaps. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
