OKay, hear me out. The OP is not wearing a bra in her own home. She has a shirt on, right? so her boobs aren't hanging out there. She is decent. Ignoring BO aside for story 3, there was also the stepmom tearing up the sketchbook, removing privacy from OP's room, or even locking OP in their room entirely. Even if the BO is not being mentioned by OP's actual mom and mom notices the BO as much as stepmom, other lines were crossed to make OP feel not safe in her father's house anymore.

@@Rebecca.Rogers No worries! Sorry if this sounded like I was jumping on the bandwagon for the easy comment against the RU-vidr. Was not intended to sound like that at all, just wanted to add support to your good apple decision since my partner grew up with divorced parents and her father's new living situation was abusive. I will never fully understand what she went through, but from what I heard there were many similarities to this story, and the only reason she never cut ties with her father was to protect her little brother from the same experiences. Again, apologies if my comment sounded trollish, the story just hit a little close to home and I wanted it to provide extra support to the good apple resolution.

Story #3 - The stepmother is a Karen. If the OP smells bad and doesn't realize it, that's no reason to be rude and make her feel embarrassed about it. And yes, the dad should stand up for his child. Story #4 - Bad apple. It sounds like OP is a controlling mom and, even though both the son and her husband are telling her they were fine with compromising to celebrate the daughter's birthday, she overruled all of them. She took what should have been the daughter's birthday dinner and turned it into a dinner that accommodated the whole family because it sounds like that's what she really wanted to do from the start.

So let me get this straight- planning a family celebration, paying for the whole thing and having to ask a 17 year old not to kill her brother at said event, is controlling? I don't know what world you grew up in but when I was a kid if my parents paid for something it was their rules and potentially killing family was not allowed... ever... under any circumstance!! And I didn't have to be told that at 7 much less 17... Must be nice in that ivory tower where potentially killing someone because it is your desire is not unthinkable.

@@arianalaiche-oriez9733 Did you miss the whole part of the story where the brother said he was perfectly fine with not attending the dinner, and the dad supported this? @user-tg2kd2nl7i

@@arianalaiche-oriez9733The mom in the story specifically said that there was only a few things on the menu that the son would eat and he wouldn't really enjoy it. This implies that the allergy was not bad enough that the boy would be killed even if he went to the restaurant. In addition, he was perfectly happy to stay home with pizza. And the dad was also fine with it. The point is after being told she could pick anywhere she wanted for her birthday, the daughter was forced to accommodate someone who didn't even need accommodation and didn't get what she actually wanted for her birthday. I would say she is okay to feel a bit annoyed. The mom is not saying she is throwing a tantrum and destroying the house either. She said she is a little salty. Under the circumstances, so would anyone I think.

I am confused... since when did rules about not killing family become a non thing... As A kid and teen I was offered several things all the time but there were limits... No illegal drugs or alchole while under age, no smoking underage, no skinning animals, no killing family... you know basic (apparently not so) common sense stuff. There is a free pass and there is social norms and planning a family event where one member could die was an exemption to "whatever you want"... what amazes me is the "gentle parents" who actually think that the mom saying "this was a family thing and not to kill your brother" was the one in the wrong here. I mean if Red Lobster is that important why does the 17 year old not have a job where she can get together with some friends from school and all go dutch on a second birthday dinner that specifically does not include the family member who COUL DIE form being there?
@Phamfy89
@Phamfy89 2 месяца назад
@arianalaiche-oriez9733 agreed (aside from the gentle parent thing? idk where that was mentioned lol) But the mom IS in the wrong when there was a perfect compromise right in front of her. The son said "I can stay home, buy me some pizza with the money you would have spent on my dish" and that way everyone's happy! Son gets to stay home away from a restaurant that could kill him, daughter gets to eat at the restaurant she chose, and nobody would be hurt! The mom is in the wrong for forcing the daughter to choose a different restaurant to go to on HER birthday when, as I said, there was already a suggested solution.

Is the second apple talking about being expected to wear a bra under her shirt or at least a bra as opposed to topless? I don't think not wearing a bra under your shirt is anything less than company appropriate. If he's paying that much attention, he's the problem. Story #3 the smell issue isn't the deciding point here. Regardless of the presence of lack of a hygiene issue, kid is a good apple. The step mom destroyed the kid's property, and likely their art, which is irreplaceable, and violated their privacy, and deprived them of a private space which is inexcusable. It's never wrong to leave abusive situations and this is 100% what is going on there. Good apple. Honestly, if the kid smells, it's probably stress sweat, which is powerful enough to override any flawless hygiene routine.

For story 2, I agree with what you said about being "company appropriate" in shared spaces. That's why I see no problem with her simply not wearing a bra. It said nothing about her shirt, so I'm assuming she still had a shirt on, just no bra underneath. I consider that completely "company appropriate." If the boyfriend isn't interested in her and she isn't interested in the boyfriend, then it's just the roommate being insecure that's making her demand she wear a bra

Story #1 - Good apple. I can understand that when you're grieving, you sometimes become possessive of your friends as a way to compensate for loneliness (I've been there). But snapping at the OP for wanting to celebrate her own birthday with her husband is crossing a line. She’s definitely very possessive. Also, a woman having a wife does not make her gay, it makes her not straight. Having attraction to women does not inherently mean you’re not attracted to men. Idk if it’s a romantic possession or just grief (I’ve had severe panic attacks from just thinking about my partner dying… I cannot imagine if they actually passed) but either way she’s being extremely possessive of OPs husband in a way that’s no longer appropriate. I can kinda understand if you’ve been connected to one person so closely for so long trying to hold onto that closeness with the next closest person but there are limits. She needs to go to grief counseling and not act like Velcro to someone else’s partner.
@vocalsunleashed

@@greenginger6668this about Jenna potentially having romantic / sexual feelings for OP’s husband. But also even without attracting to men it could be that she sees him as a kind of platonic partner or just generally the one person who (has to be) always be there for her. In any case it is not appropriate whether there are attraction feelings or not. Even just being at their house ALL THE TIME. I know she is grieving but that doesn’t excuse overstepping your welcome especially when someone is married and you are completely not taking their spouse into account.

Story #2 is undoubtedly a good apple! I rarely wear a bra anymore! Ever since the pandemic I've been staying at home a lot more than usual and I often forget to put on a bra before running a quick errand. I am still wearing a shirt and completely covered. I can go out in public without a bra and am still allowed in all venues, so being required to wear one in your own home is ridiculous! In my opinion, wearing a bra is optional. If you want to wear one because you find it comfortable or like how it makes you look, go for it. But if you don't want to wear a bra ever, that's good too. There is no male equivalent to a bra, but a bra is considered "underwear" so let's call it underwear and try the sentence again. You have to wear underwear at home, while fully clothed, because it makes my boyfriend uncomfortable... It's no one's business but your own if you choose not to wear underwear! I'm sure plenty of people don't wear panties/boxers/briefs! My best guess is that when OP is braless you can distinguish nipples under the top they're wearing. Well, not all bras are padded, so bra or no bra you can have the same results! The roommate's argument is asinine and the real issue here is the boyfriend. If he thinks OP isn't wearing a bra, that's an INSIDE thought. As in, keep it inside your head!

For story 4, I'm not sure it's favoritism, at least not entirely. I have read plenty of stories where a child's first choice birthday restaurant is shot down because siblings can't/ don't want to eat there, but this feels different. Only mom insists on a change of restaurant to include brother, so I think it comes back to her last argument: she wants the whole family together. She's putting her narcissistic need for a perfect little family unit ahead of her daughter's birthday and autonomy.

It wasn’t that I didn’t wear deodorant or sower etc, it’s that the deodorant scent I was using was mixing well with my bodies natural decent or whatever lol. I was embarrassed about it but let her help me pick out deodorants that work better for me. Edit to add, my mom didn’t notice because I was more active at my dad’s. He had a farm and a restaurant and he’d do some construction projects as well so I was working up way more of a sweat. She was locked in her bedroom for a whole weekend. I think this is appalling and not acceptable. FYI- I get cross contamination is a thing but I still think ruining your daughter's birthday stinks; especially when the brother offered to have pizza. Almost every restaurant would serve at least one shellfish item and could have cross contaminati.on. Bad Apple.

The context was given for the hygiene story, the op mentioned they clean their clothes and themselves before coming over (probably due to their reactions) and the actions and comments still continued. If we're going the least assumption route then op is a good apple.

With story 3, they are asking if they're bad for cutting out dad, and my answer is that they are probably doing themselves a favor if they do cut out Dad, at least until he learns to stand up for his child AT ALL. More than the smell thing, because who knows with that, but step mom is destroying their stuff, taking away privacy, LOCKING THEM UP FOR MULTIPLE DAYS!!!!! And dad not only doesn't stand up for his kid when it comes to basic human rights, but then thinks he's doing a good job as a parent? No. Defend your kid. Your kid should come first. That's screwed up. OP is a good apple all the way, and I wish them luck in their future endeavors

Story 2: being someone who shares a space with conservative in-laws... the roommates request makes sense to me. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their own home. That's the bottom line for me. If it's making the roommate uncomfortable, then that should be reason enough. End of story. I agree that, in personal spaces, that rule doesn't make sense, but in shared spaces, yeah, it makes sense. She's a crab apple to me, because that's not a wrong desire, but she's not on a situation to just do whatever she wants; she has a roommate that shares the space, too. Also, unicorn color? Hmmmm... I personally like speckled horses, so my unicorn would be white with pink and purple dots and a rainbow mane. And then a holographic horn. ❤ love you so much! Hope you have a fantastically amazing week!

Story 3: pretty sure stepmom is just a jerk…you kind of just glossed over ALL of the other details in the story, like the stepmom tearing pages out of OP’s sketchbook, not allowing them to close the door, and locking them in their room for a weekend, which has NOTHING to do with the way OP smells. So I agree OP is a good apple, not only for the reasons you stated, but also because of all of the other things stepmom has done

The last story reminds me of my family. My parents and siblings and I go out to eat together on each of our birthdays despite the fact that my brothers and I are adults and have moved out. Usually my grandma joins us since she lives nearby. But she doesn't like the food at the restaurant I choose every year so she doesn't come. My parents never make me choose a different place, we just accept that she won't come to my birthday dinners.

Story 2: No way! It's her home NOT the roommate's BF's place. Shared spaces or not. How ridiculous would it be to put a bra on JUST to pop into the kitchen for a drink of water, go back to your room to take it off then go "Oh yea, gotta go to the bathroom" put it back on then go back out. She's not naked or anything so I really don't see how you could be between good and crap apple on that one. Also with story 3: OP is asking is she the bad apple for cutting her father off, No she's not. He's not sticking up for her and thats that. Please Rebecca try to stick with the question asked. She wants to cut him off for not sticking up for her. Last story I agree but OP did say he's deathly allergic but yea it was her daughter's birthday and she should have done what her daughter wanted. So 3 good 1 bad.

Story 2. Crab Apple. More for OPs reaction and mocking. Maybe the roommate should have led with "my boyfriend is kind of uncomfortable with you going braless when he's here." OP doesn't say what she is wearing. I was in a similar situation. My husband and I rented out a room to a girl going through a divorce. (We only charged her $50/Week so she could save.) This girl started wearing crop tops and boy cut panties/short shorts to walk around the house. Literal underwear. She'd try to lounge in our bedroom. My husband and I were uncomfortable. It was our house. I asked her if she could, at the very least, wear some pajama pants or sleep shorts. (Something where we couldn't see her 🐪.) She became defensive and angry. "I'm paying to stay here." She moved out while we were asleep.

So i personally lived a Cinderella almost family - my would’ve been step mom was straight from hell - story threes mom I can see that same energy-she’s taking out anger on a step daughter for little reason - like really why lock the daughter in her room for a weekend? Like the teen phase and parents wanting the door open I get that , but tearing up personal property inside that room - that’s unacceptable

Story 4: I have an older sister with special needs and a younger sister and when I heard this story at first I chose crab apple mainly because Im used to making compromises in situations due to unpredictable issues or even predictable issues. But, hearing another perspective kind of showed me that everyone is deserving of attention when it's their turn to have it. My parents always made me feel loved and would always try to give me my own moments to shine despite harder circumstances. And, I feel like in this story the mother took away her daughters moment just for selfish reasons, not really for shellfish reasons 😏

Story 2: Besides the fact that she’s not naked only braless, how often is the boyfriend over at the house? If it’s every once in a while, which I doubt based on the conflict, then the request isn’t ridiculous. But if he’s over very often - he doesn’t pay rent for that space. She does. Those are shared spaces for the people who pay rent. She has the right to be comfortable in her own home. Good apple. Story 3: other people have pointed this out but the stepmother destroyed the kids property and locked them in their room??? Bad apple girl, all the way, this is about control not smell.

As someone with a food allergy, even the smell of the food I'm allergic to sometimes makes me feel queasy along with the fear of cross contamination. Do I eat at places that serve the food I'm allergic to? Yes... but I am so nervous often about cross contamination and depending on the type of restaurant depends on how strong the smell is. It also is difficult because, you truly don't know if they are safe for the person to eat and when there aren't a lot of allergen free options for said allergy. I think in regards to this story, seafood has a very strong scent and perhaps that's why her son doesn't like it. Maybe also the place isn't fully trained to cater to his allergy being that most of the menu is shellfish, his severe allergen. I completely get that the daughter should have a choice but I also see the mothers worry and want to have her son and entire family there.

Story 2: On student exchange I made a friend from Europe. We were complaining about how we have ro wear bras while sleeping in host country. Apparently, in some parts of Europe, wearing a bra isn't even common. Like, women can just walk around comfortably without a bra. Even more, they were shocked we didn't do this in the US. She asked me "Not even in California?" Man, I think I'm ready ro move to Europe. Why is not wearing a bra so taboo anyways? Men can walk around without a shirt but we cant without two layers of clothes?

Story 2: imo, good apple all the way. While it’s a shared space, it’s also OP’s body. A roommate trying to dictate how you dress or what hairstyle you have, whether or not you want to paint your nails or something would obviously be ridiculous. The roommate trying to decide what OP chooses to wear is overstepping, ESPECIALLY because it doesn’t even make the roommate uncomfortable when they’re alone and it only becomes an issue when the boyfriend comes over. If the boyfriend is really that bothered or distracted by a girl (who is still fully dressed by the way) not wearing a bra, then maybe he shouldn’t be coming over.

That last story makes me mad. It's favoritism, pure and simple. Plus, birthdays are supposed to be about the person. Mom easily could've turned into an occassion for the daughter to spend quality time with her parents on a special day & done the same for the son on his birthday. Instead she chose the route of favoritism & made her daughter's birthday about the son & his preferences.

I definitely sympathize with the kid that was being told that they stink, I smelled so bad when I was a teenager because I would stress sweat. I would shower and use soap and deodorant consistently every day (I was an athlete, needing to wash and clean well was not new), and nothing worked. Nothing would keep me smelling good for more than a few hours. I definitely sympathize with struggling with that. I’m not saying that that’s what happened, but teens smelling bad doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t showering well. For me, it was a phase I grew out of, but I was really self conscious about it at that age. I tried so hard, and I understand her frustration that her parents would keep bringing it up to her. Maybe they should have recommended clinical strength deodorant or a doctor if it was that concerning to them 🤷‍♀️
