Monologue in Japanese [ 10 ] - Four-character idiom 

Ishin Denshin is like using the shorthand or American slang "Same". The window in the car fogs up, so before you can roll the window down to mitigate this, the driver does. You might say "same". It's sort of obtuse, in a way that is difficult to convey, but this is the kind of cultural parallel that Ishin Denshin evokes. In the same car, during the summer, the passenger might sigh in dismay and turn the air conditioning on in the car before sighing again in relief. The driver might say something like "Same", which is very much conveying emotions or feelings without words. I think I understand it this way, anyway I hope I do. There are other ways in English to describe this kind of thing, like, "You read my mind" which is a very common phrase in American English at least and is a more inter-generational expression. Kiki Ippatsu: That was close or "a close call", "a near thing". With Youske's example, I think most English speakers would understand a "near miss" and this four character idiom translates very well. "I had a close call on the freeway today: this semi-truck jack-knifed right after I went by." Or, "Did you see that traffic? Glad I left when I did, that was a close call." I love the insight that, by learning four character idioms, people will open up to you more. I think this is true across most cultures who rely heavily on this kind of speech. English is very difficult because whole topics of conversation can be had in such a way. Mixing slang and idioms together with someone who doesn't speak English natively is rewarding, so it makes sense that it would be the same for Japanese people too. I love these videos because I feel I have so much to learn, but also it shows me that I'm not so different either.

One of my favourite japanese proverbs is the following: 猿も木から落ちる saru mo ki kara ochiru Even Monkeys fall from Trees. in other words: Everybody makes mistakes. (even the masters)

They help us understand the wisdom of folk people. In western languages, there are proverbs which are similar to 4 kanji expressions. An example in English: Don’t cry over spilt milk. An example in Spanish: Cada uno habla de la feria como le va en ella. Literal translation: One talks about the fair according to how one fares. Meaning/use: Our way of talking about things reflects our relevant experience, good or bad.

I'm doing lots of input right now. I've only known your channel for a few days, but I've noticed an improvement in my listening. It's amazing how you combined listening/reading/kanji/culture into the same video and still keep it so interesting! 前日新たな漢字を見かけたので四字熟語の2つで覚えてみてました。「靡」で「一世風靡」と「萎靡沈滞」のです。わかんないけど一つ少なくもレアすぎないはずです。

This "sampo" is one of my favorites. I will remember these phrases; each one represents universal human truths.
