The REM (Reseau Express Metropolitain) is Montreal's brand new era of rapid transit! This weekend, the new light metro rail system opened to the public for free rides before it enters revenue service on Monday, July 31. The first phase is open from Gare Centrale in downtown Montreal to Brossard (a suburb south of MTL). It's a very clean and efficient light metro system that will see most of it expanded to the rest of the suburbs over the next four years.

According to Wikipedia, the REM is supposed to go directly to the airport in the future, which in turn will eliminate STM bus route 747.
@AlexGetsAroundTO

Something similar happened on the silver line expansion on the DC metro; it eliminated Metrobus route 5A which went to Dulles International Airport.

I was there at Central Station and the line was pretty long. I waited over an hour to ride the train and once we got onto the station , I knew we were all in for a treat. My overall thought on the REM is that it is fast, reliable, clean, modern and a plus is the free wifi. The fact that we finally have an outdoor metro makes this day exciting. This makes me feel anxious to have the extension complete soon so I won’t have to ride that scrap bus to Cote Vertu every day.

I waited about 40 minutes in line but it moved quickly. I was very lucky to have witnessed history before having to catch the train back to Toronto. The light metro will obviously be a game-changer for the suburbs of Montreal so definitely looking forward to when it extends to the West Island and airport. Big congrats to you guys for finally having what should be a reliable metro system.

I managed to get there early enough to be on the first train out on Saturday. Heck of an experience. Everyone with me in the front car cheered when we broke out into the open air onto the viaduct.

@AlexGetsAroundTO

I wasn’t able to do the whole line until Brossard because of the huge crowd so I had to stop at Du Quartier Station and ate lunch there and came back to Montreal using the REM

The big hall at central station is called: The hall of the lost steps. / La salle des pas perdus. 😂

Lol
@Mark_72

This because of the echoing of all the steps all around, you end-up losing your own steps sounding, in the mix. And it’s truly the real name of the hall.

There was a project around 2010 to link Trudeau Airport directly to Gare Centrale, going between the CN & CP railways. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J26pjJgG5Jw.html

@Molarium
@Molarium Год назад
@@AlexGetsAroundTO Sadly the project (2010) was never built. It would have been a perfect link for the Airport Shuttle. I heard the CP did not want to move their tracks (the Shuttle would have run between the two railways in the Dorval area), so the project was abandoned. The Shuttle Airport Station was built below the then new Marriott Hotel. It is still there but used as a parking. Strangely, the new REM Station is being built more in the middle of the Airport, due to the fact that the REM will go in a northern direction and to lower the cost of the tunnel under the runway. We will have to wait until 2027 for the completion of the link, it will be the last REM Station to open.
