I was born on 14 November, 1963, 8 days b4 Kennedy was shot to death, but at the very same time in Detroit, MoPar was casting what would be the first 426 HEMI® blocks, that would find their way into Richard Petty's Blue 64 Plymouth Belvedere for the Daytona 500 in February of 64. Word has it some of the new blocks headed for Petty's camp were still cooling internally from the cast procedure in Michigan. I love this story, my life began within a few days of the infant HEMI® blocks coming into being from the blast furnaces in Detroit. I've been a MoPar Man thru to my bones since i was born! Must be a "Direct Connection" between HEMI'S® birth and mine, bet there was something in the air from all that cast Iron. BTW, Petty finished 1st at Daytona in 64, and 2nd and 3rd place were both won by steaming hot brand new 426 HEMI® Blocks, and thus a legend was created by the MoPar Gods!😉

@@ultimatemusclecar I just checked out that video.. I was in vitro kicking mom in the belly in October of 63, and that beautiful block was being cast... I love having been introduced to the world at the same time the baby HEMI'S® were being cast... Not to mention all the 426 wedge, 413 wedge and 383 cross-ram engines being cast around the time I was born! Great job on these videos, I'm subbed and get notifications! Thanks for the great work! MoPar or No Car!

Thanks for posting this video. My dad raced a '62 Savoy 413/410 for Al Roberts Plymouth in 1962, then a 426/415 Savoy and a 426/425 Belvedere for Al Roberts Plymouth in 1963. Late in the 1963 model year he bought a new 426/425 Savoy that he raced with quite a bit of success (that included wins at local, divisional, and national events) until 1969. He sold it in the fall of 1969 to take care of my mom's long recovery from two near fatal strokes that she suffered earlier in the year. It was raced for a few more years by owners who also took very good care of it before it was purchased by the first in a series of collectors. After not knowing its whereabouts for about 35 years I was contacted by its most recent purchaser. He had heard of my racing with my own Max Wedge Dodge NHRA stocker (which my dad helped me build in my late teens and assisted with tuning until he died at age 50 in 1976. I scanned and sent photos and clips from sixties racing publications to the Plymouth's owner, along with sharing some stories from its racing days. About three years later he was working a deal to buy an original factory '68 Hemi Dart, and offered to sell my dad's Plymouth to me. It is now in my garage, and I still have (and race) my 426/4 speed Dodge in my shop in my back yard. I've loved these cars since I was seven years old. Always like seeing posts like yours that are factual as well as interesting.

When NSS hit the scene I found a 1964 Dodge model 330 2 door sedan I was going to model after roger Lindamood Color Me Gone car I even took all the RM paint we had left and made the Blue myself all that was needed was the white but sadly just after the car was painted and the interior finished just before the 426 was done some lowlife SOB stole my car never to be seen again ...

The styling on the 62’s was considered to be very unorthodox, certainly unlike anything else on the road, I love them!

They didn't start calling them Max wedge engines until sometime in the 80s. I have a question: were there street versions of the cross ram 426 cars made? I was going to the races in 63 & early 64 when these cars were racing and the only ones I saw were 2 door post cars, heater delete, battery in trunk. Some had aluminum front ends & bumpers. Lately I have seen 2 door hardtops with heater & battery in front. Are these cars clones or fake cross ram cars? Also they idle rather tame & I remember the race cars had a rather erratic "cammed up" sound. Latest one I saw was at a car show in Tulsa. It was a white Polara 500 2 door hardtop, high level interior trim, heater, battery in front, and the 63 style exhaust manifolds. I was unaware that they made such.

Anyone could order one in the dealer But they didn’t make one with a smaller cam or less than 11.0:1 compression. So really no street version like the Hemi but a few drove them on the street instead of making them into track cars.. Even the Hemi street version wasn’t given the cross ram. Yes, there are many clone cars out there. Some of them use 440s.
