Jessie J had me rolling on the floor with that version of "Price Tag", the Clips of Sohyang and Natalie Weiss fixed my eyebrows and gave me clear skin, and I can't get over the fact Mixers try to downplay Jesys talent in the Little-Mix-era, she carried the harmonies as well as the other 3, I really dislike the way Jesy acted lately (you know, the whole blackfishing scandal, the Live with Minaj, the ... intersting performance at Jingle Bell ball) but her talent in LM is undenieable...
I honestly don't know wtf is SM doing with their artists 😐 None of them have had a live performance (with dance) since like 2 years ago, but for most of them we have previous clips of their live performances, which is not the case of aespa Allow them to sing live would make them develop their stability on stage, learn how tho manage the energy throughout a performance and would also help with their cuestionable way to lipsync
They really want to make Aespa brokenly perfect, and the sad part is, almost all of the fanbase think that way. Like I LOVE Aespa and GOT the beat , especially Taeyeon, I've been listening to her for years, but I'm so upset with their supposed to be live performance, even her weekend stage which is an easy song with easy choreography. But it's not surprising for big companies in kpop industry. Glad Taeyeon still has her previous concert to prove her skill, but sad that they won't allowed Aespa to sing live. Even Ningning fight for her life to outsing the backing vocal but they lowered her mic on the encore stage
Ikr. What's the use of having good singers but not giving them the chance to actually vocally perform it. Like they could've at least let them sing live on the SM concert or one of the year end shows/award shows. All the practice only get the time of light in the recording booth and thats basically it. Honestly I fear that their artists will detoriate in terms of live performing bc they could get too comfortable
THIS!! EXACTLY! We all know how great of a singer those girls are but we still need them to sing LIVE while performing on stage doing a full choreo. They're new for god sake. They're still in the "proving themselves to the world" phase, let them. 7:00 you cant deny that the korean gp and entertainment industry focuses heavily on visuals. No doubt the idols that debut (especially from the most popular companies) are good vocalists - they wouldn't be chosen to debut otherwise - but they rarely get to showcase those talents. For music shows, performance is more important so most idols have /heavy/ backing vocals or straight up lip sync. For awards shows too (it was revealed once that only 1-2 groups sang live!!) On top of that as time goes on, they get busier and don't have regular vocal training and practice anymore and the effects from the training before debut start decreasing :(( Rose said it herself in the Blackpink Netflix documentary that when they were trainees, they were surrounded by music but now if she wants to practice she has to do it at odd hours(like the middle of the night) since they are so busy with other things. But yeah it is hard to deny that kpop stars are muuuuuch more stable than most popular singers. They just never get to prove themselves EDIT: Even groups like blackpink whose vocalists are good are often very inconsistent. in their d4 era they sounded horribly underprepared (singing wise) - got better during ktl and it went down again during lsg

@Gina Rose Those people are called haters (every single singer had them- from the Mariahs to the Selenas). However, I have seen Beyonce getting praised more and more as a vocalist in recent times (I would say more than ever).
I wouldn’t say that Beyoncé is an underrated vocalist because anyone who takes the time to listen to her live performances knows how good she is. Even on YT I see most of the people praising her for her vocals. She’s one of the best vocalists out there and no one really denies that unless they’re delusional. I do agree on the fact that people tend to focus more on her “performer side” and dismiss her vocals but I also do think this is kind of her fault. Since the self-titled album her songs became less challenging and/or interesting vocally (with some exceptions obv) and in live performances she arguably decided to give her voice a backseat in favour of choreography lately. I love Bey but the amount of lipsync that she uses during her concerts is just too much and this might be one of the reasons some people might dismiss her vocal proficiency.
1:25 I've been guilty of that as well 😩 You are right, most of us were saying "underrated vocalists" in terms of not being as renowned as we think they deserve, based on their incredible vocal talent. "Underrated artist" would be better but I don't know if it still works for a vocalist like Tori Kelly. Sure, she's a wonderful vocalist but her discography leaves a lot to be desired; and when I think of one being a phenomenal artist, a captivating discography comes to mind. So I wonder what the fitting description would be.
I feel like madison beer gets overlooked bc she hasnt always been a good singer and was actually known for NOT being that great vocalist a couple years ago. she's really improved a lot and i love her live vocals now!

kpop artists are definitely talented, but just like what you said, nowadays a lot of them focus more on dancing rather than singing... older kpop groups (2gen~3genish, especially sm artists) have incredible vocal techniques (kry, taeyeon, exo trio, shinee trio, ailee, sandeul, eunji etc) which is why it's also really weird to me why sm dont let aespa sing live. you know they had proper training and can sing, let them sing!!
I only disagreee with the Kpop opinions. as the years progress they do look in less in actual singing, dancing and rapping talent and focus more on visuals as they can sell more than someone who is actually good musically. Many Kpop artist especially in 4th gen get picked off the streets and venues because of thier physical appearance over people who auditioned because they fit the visual standards more. As of 4th gen, it is EXTREMELY RARE to find an actual good vocalist. Mamamoo, EXO and RV were the last good vocal groups to come out of kpop
I agree but there are also some very good 4th gen groups vocally. Purple Kiss etc. And although a lot of idols are now picked off the streets etc, not anybody can be an idol. It takes years of dedication and taleng

I think the reason Aespa isn't singing live yet because they are not fully confident yet and SM doesn't want to take a risk where they do a live singing and make a mistake because in Kpop all it takes is 1 off note, vocal crack to be branded as bad singers by Kpop stans
I don't think being not confident is an excuse, and if the girls are not confident is because they haven't sung live yet since debut SM should let them sing live to improve their stability on stage, and that also would help them tho have better stage presence, their choreos are not that hard to sing live, but SM is obsessed with perfection
If Aespa was a performance-centered group, I would kind of understand if they don't sing live all the time, but they are not. They're a vocal-centered group, and it's just a shame that they don't show their vocals a lot. Also, SM's strenght as a company has always been singing, which is why it's even more disappointing. I do agree with the confidence thing tho. I stan Twice, and they have good vocals when they are confident, like during their recent concert, for example, and they have improved a lot, but their vocals always get dragged because they had a couple voice cracks during encores, and their lack of confidence during encores really affects their performance.
istg i watched that not shy stage practice more than the actual not shy mv. it's SO damn refreshing to hear a kpop group sing live after the wave of fake live singing with lar since mid 3rd gen... and that group singing live being itzy, the girlgroup with the hardest, most energy draining choreographies it's just so crazy. puts the "vocal groups" of 4th gen to SHAME that the most dance focused gg (probably) ever is the one with their mics on. not shy is like a heavy cardio workout and yet the girlies who just do arm poses and occasional easy footwork can't even do a single verse live. at least grilgroups put some effort recording lar so they sound different from the original track. 4th gen boygroups don't even bother with that

I agree on the fast vibrato EXCEPT for when it’s from when you’re from. Dolly and Miley have a fast vibrato but they’re from Appalachia. When you learn that as a kid, you put technique to it and it sounds better. It doesn’t sound good when it’s from lack of training or stability. And they can both slow it down when they want to so they have control over it.
Katy Perry and Miley bring something special to their songs, I absolutely love their voices. Whenever Katy sings a demo someone else sang too, katy just brings life to it. Her voice is so fun. But while Lea is technically great I can’t stand her voice, it is hard for me to even listen to
Aespa have been singing live in their encore stages! It’s true tho, SM needs to stop the lipsynch. Literally all of their artists can sing live and most of the kpop artists out there who are famous for great vocals are from SM. Hopefully Aespa will showcase their vocals live soon:)
I totally relate to the second one; I told some people that Tori isn't an underrated vocalist and they attacked me for it lol 😂 And Natalie Weiss' voice is actually quite pleasant to listen to imo Honestly speaking, if vocal agility is the most important quality of a vocalist, someone like Tori Kelly would be a much better vocalist than people like Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson but, oh well... here we are. I think Perrie would take most of the lower harmonies since she has the deepest voice of the three... or maybe Jade since she has the lowest tessitura... probably also Leigh-Anne since she has some nice dynamics and her volume in even the lowest parts of her range is intact. If I could choose, I would choose Perrie (Jade can do the middle and Leigh can do the high).
kpop idols are not untalented but there is still a lot to be desired when it comes to vocals... and ITZY is a great example of that. i've seen a lot of videos of ITZY singing live and trying their best but still you can tell there is a lot that they should work on...
I do think Jazmine Sullivan,Fouzia,Tori Kelly,JoJo are not at all Underrated vocally, they're always mentioned everywhere all the time!! And I don't think Beyonce & Lady Gaga are vocally Underrated nor Overrated as well...but Madison Beer yes,she is Underrated vocally....
I disagree. I actually have never seen Jazmine, Tori, Fouzia, Jojo receive criticism with their flaws but artists like Gaga & Beyonce get far more scrutiny for their vocal 'flaws'. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the "Overrated" comes from her popularity, but people are fast to point out that Gaga's not that agile or doesn't have big range.. or that Beyonce oversings or sounds boring. But if you keep that same energy and say Tori/Jojo sound whiney or adolescent you tend to be met with debate. I feel like the existence of the B-hive & Monters is because people are overcompensating for Gaga & Bey's lack of flowers.

Lady Gaga used to be underrated as a vocalist with the general public but that changed after her Oscars performance and after "A Star Is Born". Tori and Jojo's upper belt issues plus Tori's shrill head voice moments are talked about in the Vocal Community but you are right, most won't mention the whiny aspect plus the masses mostly praise them.

Unpopular opinion: vibrato that is too slow or fast makes the singer sound like a goat and this applies to both. Both sound like bleating to me in most cases

Lea Michelle, that live performance of My Man that she did as a tribute to Barbra, man... I'm still mesmerised. I like it even more than the original version. 4:38 I don't think most of them do vibrato with proper techniques. That's why they sound annoying.

THAT clip of Jessie J performing Price Tag is... something. But she has gotten better over time, and she has a great voice. Lea Michele has one of the best voices out there, but it pissed me off how much we had to listen to her on Glee, while amazing singers like Naya, Amber and Jenna were unseen. (That's not Lea's fault, it's all Ryan Murphy lol) Someone who will criticize kpop bands just have no idea the amount of work they do. Even if I don't like her a lot nowadays, as a longtime fan of Little Mix I will never deny Jesy's talent in the band. However I think they work best as a trio and I'm really excited about their tour!

According to my vocal teacher, if you hear a breathing sound there is still something obstructing in your throat, i.e. it is suboptimal. In most of these examples you can hear the breathing sound, thus they all could still improve I say.

Your point about nowadays kpop idols are focused on being better dancers than singers - that has always been the case, way back from the 1st and 2nd gen. There are main vocalists in each group, but overall the performance (dancing, visuals) has always been the focus of kpop. Even BTS got popular in the first place for their dancing and choreography, not anything related to their vocals. (Obvs BTS isn't an early kpop group, but they're the most well-known group)
Britney has been through HELL. The least people could do is give her some slack, of course after more than a decade of abuse and forced medications her vocals aren’t 100%, she’ll get there and shut all the haters up 😌
Tori Kelly is not an underrated vocalist but rather an underrated artist. I actually first knew about her falling in love with her song, Dear No One. Vocal technique is MOSTLY best enjoyed in a performative function like on a stage, competition, concert and not for your regular, everyday music listening. It's not that they are not enjoyable but rather, listening to these singers and performances have a time and place and it's not on an everyday basis. Basic pop songs and RnB are my everyday playlist, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy listening to SoHyang or Natalie every now and again. It just needs to be on a specific time, place, or mood. Vocal agility is just fun which I think is why people enjoy it so much. It doesn't get overbearing like say upper belts. I think for the longest time, songs have had a big note climax especially in pop that people got bored which is why they started including vocal agility more. Plus it's easier to attempt a vocal run and be bad at it compared to attempting a really bad high note for the casual listener. 😃😃 Kpop may have focused less and less on vocal training and more on choreo and asethetic, It's definitely wrong to call them untalented. Not a lot of west pop artist even dance! I can't imagine how much practice it takes to get these dance numbers perfect, but also get the group coordination down.
I have often seen you talking about Jessie’s oversinging rather than her incredible voice and vocals. She used to do some oversinging back in the day but now she doesn’t and why does that always bother you? I mean no offense but she’s literally one of the best vocalists of our time and we should appreciate her at all costs. And that “oversinging” has made a true indentity for herself. It’s unique and there’s nothing wrong with being unique. She is the MOST VERSATILE vocalist here in this list. Yes I agree Jessie J has improved greatly. 1:25 I am guilty of but I think people call artists like Jazmine Sullivan, Tori Kelly underrated cause in their eyes they don't get the same recognition as those who are more popular. Lea michele reminds me of Sarah Brightman ( if you don't know who Sarah Brightman is she originated the role of Christine dae in the phantom of the opera on Broadway ) both are exceptional vocalists , but treat the people they work with horribly and have gained bad reputations
I used to overrate kpop singing sills, honestly speaking they barely sing live and I've never heard a live stage where they sound better than the original, they're not that far off of Selena gomez very inconsistent like her, hit and misses I got a reality shock when I saw Charlie puth guest performance and it was hit in the face he sounded amazing that night blew everyone else put the park
My opinion an underated vocalist in contemporary music was Minnie Riperton , most people only remember her because of her 4 octave range and whistle register and most people only know her because of Mariah Carey , Minnie riperton was a vocal technician and it's sad people only remember her because of her range 😢

Jessie J's oversinging is part of her style. What I mean is, I truly believe some of the ad libbing and embellishments are deliberately over the top, kind of obnoxious, and a little quirky and ugly. She's having fun with it and letting her personality and energy flow out naturally. And yet, unlike some singers *ahem* Christina *ahem* I never get the sense that she's trying to show off at all.
