The idea of the Courier dragging Caesar’s corpse halfway across the Mojave, through Freeside and through the Strip just for Mr House to react with “meh” is pretty funny
Courier: "Caesar is dead." House: "It doesn't really matter; it won't make much difference in the battle." Courier: "I was just seeing if you wanted to share. More for me then."
@@DarkOmegaMK2 for what it's worth, that's kinda a running theme. Fallout 3 asking "what's even the point of all this if it doesn't help people?", NV asking "what's even the point of all this if we just go extinct over nonsense?", FO4 asking "would they even be much better than the Enclave if they had real power?" and 76 asking "what is the point of making Fallout if we're just going to go ahead and play the friggin Beach Boys?"
Honestly. that's why I like House. He has a real vision for humanity, NCR and Legion just want to go backwards and do thing that have already been tried. He let's me kill whoever I want as long as he get's what he needs out of them. Why would you want to pay taxes under the NCR or be witness to whatever the fuck the Legion does when House just let's you go around doing whatever you want?
He's indeed speaking the truth when he said "the Legion will be breaking down, riven by internal conflicts, a monster consuming itself". Caesar himself knew how to govern the Legion due to him being a former Followers of the Apocalypse member, while Lanius only knows battle, and ONLY battle.
@@PainweedingPills You know if I had a nickel for every time I've talked down the final boss in a fallout game only to shoot him in the back as he's walking away, I'd have two nickels.
@@elvis5008yeah, using barter and speech against Lanius reveals he is actually quite aware of logistics and long term strategy. Sure, he isn't Caesar, but he's also no fool.
@@GeraltofRivia22 Which is weird for a guy who's all about battle and carnage. Kinda feels like those speech checks were just tacked on at the last minute.
"I killed Caesar" "It will affect the battle of Hoover Dam, minimally" "I killed all the soldiers in his camp on my way out, surely that will change something" "I said it will affect it minimally!"
Im just imagining House wordlessly watching the courier eat Caesar's corpse in front of him, with an expression somewhere between disinterest and disappointment.
Courier: > kills Caesar > proceeds to drag him over half of Mojave to present his corpse to Mr. House > devours Caesar after Mr. House is not impressed
@@DreamersOfReality House is talking to the Courier, not to us. How much do you think the Courier actually knows about what the pre-war US was really like? They're not in a position to challenge House's assertions about that sort of thing. In any case, American democracy in Fallout DID fail - it gave rise to a staggeringly morally bankrupt corporate oligarchy.
House was a very well written character. He's genuinely the smartest guy around, still, the temptation to golf club him and go for the Yes Man ending is so hard to resist.
@@6milhõesEm5AnosÉLorota They compensate for that, though, by being unhinged over time. House not only seems to have retained his mental faculties, he almost seems robotic in how cunning and strategic he is, resisting the usual temptations in favor of calculating outcomes.
I like how you proudly showing Caesars body like a kid who just got his first fish catch and wanting your dad to be proud of it but somehow your dad is disappointed so you just ate it
Bro imagine how absurdly badass and scary that is tho, imagine you being Mr.House and you witness the courier wipe out cottonwood cove and an ENTIRE LEGION CAMP ALONE, just to pick their leaders corpse and have the balls to drag him halfway across the mojave just to show it to you
Well I mean unlike the white gloves you aren’t bound by the ‘Don’t eat people clause’. I’m sure eating Caesar also has no impact on Houses calculations and of course House has no intention of policing what people do in their spare time.
@@LordTyph Only because the world doesn't know what condition Caesar's in. If you don't kill him, the tumor will. You basically have to be deliberately going the Caesar route and curing his brain tumor personally. Even if he's still alive, by the time of the Dam Battle, those Securitrons under his fort will have reduced him to ash on the way out.
I think House would have preferred to be the one to kill him, in spectacular fashion. His loose lips do tell that "the Legion is still monster enough that defeating it will make me like mighty indeed", hinting to his intentions. Personally humiliating Caesar would definitely have been a feather in his cap!
@@DreamersOfReality And, given the Securitrons are right underneath his feet, I'm guessing he and his camp go up in smoke in the Yes Man and House paths. Good warning to the NCR, you might want to back off unless you want to be their next target.
Courier: I did it Mr. House! I killed Caesar! Mr. House: So anyways, here's my speech about how the legion won't be defeated by loss of their leader. Courier: Did you not pay attention to the body i carried all the way across the Mojave?
I find curious and funny how is it that people get in conversations and entire debates about whether the NCR or the Legion will take control of the Mojave...when the the game not only reveals that Caesar is slowly decaying, but also many characters mention directly at the player that the moment he perishes, the legion will start to crumble.
Because players put more thought into the possible future of the legion than even obsidian did. Lanius doesn’t care about the legion, he cares about conquest and battle and he said so himself. If given the chance to avoid governing he would do so. So in the event of Caesar’s death who actually takes over? Who is actually capable of leading the legion, he is a very very intelligent, capable, logistical, and high ranking praetorian who even caesar himself says no one would dare to challenge? Lucius. Lucius is the commander of the guard, the most senior ranking member, the most experienced both tactically and combat wise, and the most capable of leading. Logic dictates that Lucius would be the one to take over the legion not lanius and that lanius would gladly let him if it meant lanius kept his position as a combat active general in the legion while Lucius took over the governing body with immediate support from the rest of the legion who know him, respect him, and would follow his orders.
@@thehorrorhound6575 The Joke My dude, Lucius is some rando that gets blasted in Caesar's tent to most players, and to the rest of them he's literally just Some Guy. He's not notable in any way, and certainly not capable of taking over for Caesar. After all, they both have 4 INT lol
@@batrachian149 the lore begs to differ. Lucius has been the head of Caesar’s elite guard for so long that no one has challenged him for his spot in years. Caesar himself says “it’s either out of respect or fear” if you choose to kill Caesar during his tumor surgery it’s Lucius who is the quest giver for the remainder of the story. Because even new Vegas devs knew “this is the logical guy to take over”. As for calling him a rando no one cares about you should speak for yourself. I got my dick ripped off verbally by 30 different comments yesterday for not remembering chomp Lewis had a daughter.
It mean they gonna be dangerous at the beginning because they gonna want to honor Caesar, then they will make him a deity. And after all that, they will get break from the inside by themselves. It's like what happen to the real ancient Rome.
It's a nice thing to fluff up the world a bit, but these dialogue options are also basically just the game's meta way of handwaving an important person dying but the finale staying identical. Ideally there would be some kind of tangible effect to killing Caesar in non-Legion playthroughs, even if it was only more ending slides.
But the effect is exactly the same regardless. The accomplishment of killing Caesar is belittled by both dialogue and practical effect as it makes no discernible difference in the way the plot plays out moving forward. All New Vegas is doing that Fallout 4 doesn't is to condescendingly inform you that your actions don't matter if they don't fit into the neat little box of how it wants its narrative to go. Cheap window-dressing of 4 lines of dialogue or not, the actual end result is in all effective and meaningful ways the same: limiting, dismissive, and shallow.
@@TheRPGenius House explained why it wouldn’t impact the battle, though. It is also commented on by a multitude of characters from varying walks of life. So even in-game, it definitely FEELS like you did something notable. In the game, House says Caesar’s death will eventually lead to division and civil war within the Legion. But immediately following it, they have a goal. They have a single, unifying purpose and multiple years of pre-established preparation and training to accomplish. Boone also has dialogue about it. He says not only is there already a clear, determined line of succession, but the NCR also has intel Caesar isn’t running the military anymore. He’s essentially a figurehead by the time you kill him. There are both character interactions which comment on your action, which let’s you get more insight into a variety of characters and factions. From legionaries swearing to kill you, to NCR praise to House’s dismissal. There are also satisfying and consistent lore explanations for why it doesn’t stop them attacking. It’s why the final boss in 3/4 runs isn’t Caesar, but the Legate. New Vegas is a game that does way better than FO4, FO3, pretty much all Bethesda games and most other games in general at allowing the players to make, and responding to, decisions. But it just can’t have you stop the second battle of Hoover Dam. The games entire buildup is dependent on it. EDIT: grammar.
@@realdaggerman105 Probably the one person who takes Caesar's death the most seriously if you tell him is Joshua Graham. He knew the Legion, better than anyone, so he knows just how significant it is. It's easy to see the Legion, as an outsider, and think it won't matter much, but Graham knows that only Caesar could really lead. If you don't kill Lanius at the Dam, he drives the Legion into the ground.
@@TheRPGenius Fun Fact- Killing Edward before talking to Hanlon about his false radio calls gives you an option to tell him, which causes him to not off himself at the end of the quest. Weird how in almost literally every single attempt someone makes to try and put the bugthesda games above New Vegas falls flat when you actually play the game for yourself.
An excellent analysis by Mr House. Think of the defeats of the Persians by the Greeks. They still kept coming back for more. As a player the opportunity to depose Caeser would have been interesting. Plus if the player wants to be really evil perhaps a centurion as a companion. Great for a melee/unarmed build if you add Rex or ED-E. Thoughts on the best brain transplant for Rex might be interesting as the Violetta brain didn't cut it. Roughly 10% speed increase when it should have been 100%. All the best NV devotees
Courier: *KIlls the leader of one his largest enemies, preventing many years of war in the future between the two" House: "Its irrelevant since it doesnt effect the next month of my life"
@@andrewstewart1464to be fair, the next financial quarter literally has a massive battle that will determine the fate of the entire mojave (and him). Its understandable he's focused on that.
The long-term only matters when you can survive beyond the short-term. Imagine you find a gold mine in the middle of the desert. You would be rich beyond your wildest dreams, but that gold mine only matters if you have enough food and water to survive getting back to civilization.
"By my calculations, his death will affect the shape of the battle for Hoover Dam minimally, if at all." This is 100% it tbh. The Legion soldiers are more work than Caesar and the Legate put together. Caesar is an old man who has amnesia-inducing seizures, and the Legate can just be talked down gently.
I've played this game for more than a decade, but until now I'Ve never noticed that this is the same voice actor who played Odo on Deep Space Nine. René Auberjonois.
Legion ferry operator; "oh k what do i have today?..looks like courier 6, arcade gannon, that weird eyebot thing and the corpse of my current leader...seems legit, ready..."
"I killed House." "Yes, I can tell. These screens are two-way, you know. It's not as if it matters, really. Not in the immediate short-term or however long you stretch the game while you dawdle about in the wastes."
This si one of the things that always gets to me. Obviously the Legion is a screwed up place but as Raul points out the region was horrific before they arrived and them being there is the main reason raiders arent cannibalizing everyone that dares form a town. The collapse of the Legion would create a power vaccum that would ruin the lives of all the regular people under Legion rule that could say "Well at lest they keep the raiders away and the septims flowing". When I play other factions I wish there was a way to still save Ceasar so at least after beating them the collapse out east wont be as catostropic and maybe they can try and cobble something together that will keep some it together
Mr Horse:As much as I appreciate the fact that you bring his body right here with the various monsters but. SHIT, I understand, doesn't have a lot of options to eat, but I needed to do it here??!!
I may be a little late to the party, but how do you deal with doors/loading screens while holding a body? I wanted to drag ED-E to scrapyard that way, but the first doors in Mojave express were the ultimate boss of my adventure.
People say that House is a psychopath and a tyrant. Meanwhile any time you disobey his orders you're met with casual indifference (with the exception of the platinum chip, but given how long he was waiting for that thing and how important it was to his plans thats understandable)
What's funny is if you avoid most of the game and head straight to the Lucky 38 right from the start and don't deviate from that path at all, House is ADAMANT that Caesar MUST live in order for his plans to work at all. Like he says that Caesar has to be around for the Legion to even attempt to take the Dam so you can kill the Legion and boot the NCR so no one opposes him with a chance to actually overthrow him.
In fnv the legion is usually my go to faction. Not because i even remotely agree with them but because i love a good villian. So when i see the courier kill ceaser, and literally drag his corpse to one of his enemies to boost i cant help but think to myself 'yeah thats deserved'
killing ceaser before the battle wil only be detremental because they wil fight harder because he is dead, not killing him doesnt rile them up making them fight a little less hard actualy. if someone takes away someone you care about just before a big battle they wil fight you twice as hard.
