Mucking Up a Flying Pig - Weathering a Bachmann Ivatt 4MT - Yorkshire Dales Model Railway

This week I weather my Bachmann Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0. Notoriously one of the ugliest British steam locomotive classes ever built, they were nicknamed Flying Pigs. I think that’s a bit unfair!
1 - I used my airbrush to spray the whole locomotive with a 50/50 mix of Tamiya grey and black.
2 - I used Railmatch Rust to spray the tender interior and highlight grime on the underframe and cylinder fronts.
3 - I cleaned the wheels using Isopropol Alcohol, a 9V battery and a cotton bud.
4 - I added Humbrol smoke weathering powder to the smokebox and cab roof to add a matte finish in contrast to the shiner boiler and tender sides. I added some rust weathering powder to the fronts of the the cylinders.
5 - I added coal to the tender and secured it with diluted PVA glue with a drop of washing up liquid.
6 - I added grease marks to the buffers using matte black paint and a cotton bud
As always thanks for watching.

I wonder if anyone else feels this way. Your layout and filming and indeed weathering are simply amazing and bring a warm glow of nostalgia. But the weird thing was the opening clip of the real thing with the child, this simply made me think of what we have lost in the name of progress, and all today is rush on the roads. I think we have lost too much....

@@MouldyRaspberry I was a kid then, at the closing moments, of course at that age you dont truly appreciate what is important and what isnt. Looking back it would be different and so would my interest and actions, like so many of us. But thanks to enthusiasts like your good self we can turn the clock back even if only for a while, thank you. The nearest man ever came to making life was the steam engine, it lived breathed and indeed smelled amazing. Today they create robots, but they have no life no spirit no matter how clever, or in fact potentially dangerous.

I have one waiting in my workshop queue, so it's nice to see someone else's. I would also say "not ugly" see Bulleid Q1 for ugly! It might be a while before my own Ivatt gets finished, boring wiring is being done at the moment. 43047 started it's career at Bristol Bath road but then spent many years at Saltley before stints at Wellingborough, Heaton Mersey and ending it's career at Workington. Yet another good vlog.

Splendid ! Nice idea the prototype footage at the beginning, I have seen that running bunker first for this type of locomotive was not exceptionnal. Honestly, not ugly for me (yes, it's a Mogul...), but aesthetics are highly subjective. For my own, I love the soviet-like/brutalist look of industrial pieces of equipment and buildings, it has a “serious business” appeal for me, contrary to round shapes and art-deco like cowlings. I am a serious fan of the zero aesthetics Q1 of the Southern, it screams “function über alles, to hell with being pretty”, and I like it. And your subtle work of weathering is a masterpiece by its own, as always... Thanks for the video !
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 3 года назад
Thanks Olivier. Completely agree, I think that’s why I like the BR standards so much as well. They incorporate the business like look of continental and American locomotives. I like the Q1s as well, I’d like to see the preserved engine run again one day.

It would be fun to hack this model to the alternative version produced by the LMS drawing office. The class was the replacement for the 1911 design 4F which continued in production until 1941. There is an illustration of an early sketch which shows the locomotive looking like a small Black Five, with curved footplating and the cab panelling extended downwards. I think that as this was around 1945 the drawing office team must have been inspired by Soviet T34 tank. Apparently the crew were more than happy with them, though, after the spartan 4Fs.
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 3 года назад
That’s interesting, I didn’t know that! I’ll have to see if I can find a photo is that sketch. Thanks for the info 😀
@physiocrat7143
@physiocrat7143 3 года назад
@@MouldyRaspberry It might have been in one of the books by ES Cox where I saw the sketch. It looked a bit ordinary. Cox was in the LMS design team with Riddles. Cox developed the BR standard frames with stress relief for the axle box cut outs. The Stanier locomotives are prone to frame cracking from the corners of the axle box slots. The final LMS designs were a deliberate styling job as well as being designed for functionality. If they were doing the same thing today they would have used a lot of stainless steel eg for the cladding, smokebox, cab and tender, with small areas painted or applied logo, number, to get a space age look. Something to try on a model, perhaps, with one of the freight company's logos? PS those LNER coaches would look even better with close couplings.

The crew seem to have liked them. The cabs were comfortable and ergonomic and kept the weather out when running tender first. They were among the first with rocking grates which saved a lot of time and effort at the end of the shift. The styling was controversial when they came out in 1947.

Nice, deft weathering. I, too, am wondering if you apply a fixative over your powders. I would think that otherwise you would get King Kong sized fingerprints on your models and have to come up with some sci-fi episodes to explain them. The good folks of Yorkshire would not be pleased to see Godzilla and Kong heaving and maiming their locos and wagons, and snacking on the local sheep and goats!
