Perhaps her mother never had a proper wedding dress. Lots of people just had to get married in their smartest outfit back then. Don't forget it wouldn't have been that long after WW2. In the UK rationing didn't finish until 1954 and lots of things were still in short supply. My daughter is only a few years older than the young lady in this video, and my mum (her grandmother) married in the sixties. Her wedding dress was pretty but nothing like the flowing creations people expect today. It was more of a tea length with no train. This lady's mother would have been around the same age I imagine. I can't believe that none of you have the imagination to realise that not everyone was able to have a lavish wedding with an expensive dress. This mum may have been the first one in her family to be able to do so.

They could have modified it. Knock iff the sleeves, change the v at the bottom to a curve make a sweetheart neck and it's a ballerina style . Not hard.

Yeah, there were a lot of Princess Diana’s wedding gown spin-offs in the 1980s. Unfortunately, I’m not wild about Diana’s gown. The ruffle collar and puffy sleeves were too much IMO, but I can see a 19yo young woman in 1981 loving it. Btw, have you seen the recreation of Princess Diana’s backup wedding gown? There was a video released with the designer here on RU-vid recently. Go search it. 😊 No frilly collar, no puffy sleeves, and no long train. It looked like something that would have been worn by Marie Antoinette.

Imagine a bride whose mom absolutely demanded that HER wedding dress would do for her daughter. The mom's words of "I've always dreamed of seeing you married in my wedding gown." were hammered into this poor girl's mind. She wore her mother's gown hating every minute of time in it. After the vows were said and she was officially married she dashed into the bride's room and changed into another dress that she had secretly purchased and then went into the reception on her husband's arm. When her mother came up to demand an explanation for the change in her daughter's gown, the girl replied through gritted teeth, "Well, you wanted to see me married in your dress and you have. NOW, I'm dress in a gown I love rather than that out-dated and ugly gown you wore." The bride went on to enjoy the rest of her wedding and had the photographer do several shots over. She really hated her mother's dress.

@@dulcilass Sounds like that mother had a daughter for her to treat like a puppet and the daughter did her best to be the puppet her mom wanted. And as soon as she was a legal wife she no longer was her mother's puppet because it's the husband's turn to be puppet master. Hope that is not the case, but often happens when someone was reared to only be a puppet; they look for better puppet masters.

@@timeforchange6818 Carol usually had a good relationship with her mom. It was just that the mom had this hangup about the daughter wearing her mother's wedding dress. It really wasn't all that odd when I was young. I saved my dress for my daughter. She wasn't shaped anything like me, so we tossed it into a give away basket.

I did think it was a strange remark, because there ARE occasions when you'd take your own dress to a wedding dress shop. For instance if her daughter HAD liked it and they'd wanted alterations, or if she'd wanted them to suggest ways she could have it restyled to make it more modern. Surely they are there to give advice as well as flog expensive frocks?

My parents got married in 1998. My mom is thinking about getting me to try on her size 0⃣ ballgown with off the shoulder sleeves but I don't know if it's too heavy, even fit me or even my style. Her dress is a ballgown but I have seen photos of it.

@@timeforchange6818 maybe, I would try it on for her but here is the problem, her dress is a size zero and it is very tiny. I don't know if it's really me. I am not even married yet but I don't know if it would fit me and I don't even wanna rip a seam.

Maybe she won't push it when the time comes, but it she does, please, just give it a try so she can let go.

I can so relate to this. I had a very similar dress to the mom's, and would have loved my daughter to wear it. But she chose a mermaid style, and looked gorgeous. Every bride should feel unique.
