Time to fight off the Ruler of Darkness, Yami! This is it...the final battle! Copyrights to Okami belong to former Clover, ReadyatDawn Studios (for Wii port), and ultimately Capcom.
I actually really liked how you basically only really hear about Yami once, from Ninetails. It sort of makes him the opposite of Amaterasu - Ammy's the center of the pantheon of gods, and the most well known, whereas Yami, as the mastermind of darkness, is so good at manipulating others to do his work that only the highest ranking demons are even aware of him, let alone the rest of the world. Discovering him is supposed to feel like discovering evil's secret.
And in spite of that, the prevailing theory is that Yami represents humanity’s sins. I always thought that was a little off. I like the idea of him being something weird and primordial
Not gonna lie, when I used the mist ability on Yami’s slot machine form and I saw the spirit of Queen Himiko throwing health orbs down, the biggest smile grew on my face
@@mattdubz6890 He shows up during the animation and deals out a ton of damage, like how Suzano joins with a sword attack if you use crescent and Queen Himiko gives you healing items if you use veil of mist.
Friendly reminder that all of Yami's forms were the flaws and evils of humanity. So basically Ammy was almost killed by those she was trying to protect.
Tokoyami no Sumeragi, the Lord of Everlasting Darkness, and the darkness that resides in all living things. Form 1 - Humanity’s desire to destroy. Form 2 - Humanity’s desire to burn. Form 3 - Humanity’s desire to gamble and take risks with lives Form 4 - Humanity’s desire to use technology for nefarious purposes. Final form - Humanity’s desire to use their hands for evil. True form (core of Yami) - A fish. The belief that evil can come from something so small and unappealing and the origin of evil.
People go on about how Yami's forms represent the evils of humanity. But are we just gonna ignore how Yami, the fish, has the same markings on his body as the Brush Gods?
Except the brush gods are white with red markings. Like Reshiram, eastern dragon, nature. And Yami is black with blue markings. Like Zekrom, western dragon, technology. The symbolism of contrary forces is deeper than you can ever imagine.
@@techlevel80 while the brush gods are many equal beings that guard nature and goodness, and are powered by the praise they earn from personally helping others, Yami is a single, selfish being that abuses and spreads technology and evil, and powers itself by influencing mortals to act in its name instead, spreading fear of what it represents.
@@maxrichards3881plus Yami's markings are more rigid, looking like circuitry, whereas the brush gods markings look like they're painted on, being more curvy and such.
I always wondered if that’s supposed to imply some kind of connection to divinity, like yami’s something similar to the brush gods or if it’s just coincidence.
Aunisty Switzer its to show that evil can come anyting no matter theyr form or size that evil starts from everithing and all is stages show how we humans participate in evil all the time the hand speacialy
I know you’ve posted this comment 4 years ago, but I just want to say. It’s a loooong battle. Even with the purification parchments it still took me a good 20min lol
y'know something Yami has that Akuro never had is symbolism and implication, while Akuro is a lot of a generic antagonist "i will destroy everything" type of guy, Yami's nature is something else, off from the moon runes we see in Yami's armor we can gather he's actually related to the Moon Tribe in a more intimate way, and being described as the origin of all machinery (so most likely Yami is how the Moon Tribe ended up having so many technological wonders), Yami may be a small fetus-like fish inside an ball, but its designs, lack of personality and yet managing to be such an symbol of evil really pushes the message that evil has no reasoning to that way other than it just is, Akuro kinda disappoints as the successor to Yami for that very reason, i hope that if Okami 3 really does happen we get something that really takes what Yami was and pushes it into being even more threatning, i also would love some official origins for Yami because the most that we can gather is off from like 1 moon rune inside his true form's bowl and while thats cool and all i really wanna know who gave this fish a mech and why he possesses the same markings as the gods
I actually loved how he wasn`t known by almost anyone.I don`t like when the final boss has so much storyline to him, it makes him just too well-known if you understand what i mean.I love how Yami is so mysterious.
The only boss battle where I died. It was horrifying at first because I thought "NONONO! Yami will take over!" Then I realized that I had a completely full Astral Pouch and I went right back up. It made me realize just how much the makers of the game REALLY didn't want you to die. They made it so easy to play through the game without even actually dying once; I bet the reason for this was so the player could experience the game without getting frustrated at constant death, like many other games.
Yeah considering the maker, Hideki Kamiya himself, who is also the maker of Devil May Cry, well known for its difficulty. I mean, he can absolutely make the game as difficult to his desire if he wants to. But it just make no sense, the game wants you to sits back and relax and enjoy the arts while telling a story (which you are a part of interactively) and touching your heart. The difficulty is moderate, to the point where this still reminds that you are playing a game and fighting monsters and giving you that kick, but not to the point where it becomes stressful.
when i first saw Yami i was like... ''Yami is a ball?'' and then he opens and im like, ''OH! my bad, its a tiny fish in a tiny ball!'' BEHOLD THE MASTER OF EVIL!!! A FISH THINGY!
Why is Bowser a big Turtle? Why is Ganon a Pig? Why can't Yami be a fish? There are plenty of odd villain designs in games, I don't think there is any real reason for it, other than needing some sort of odd characteristic.
People like to seek meanings in places that probably don’t demand it. I guess an enigmatic villain like this sort of ignites the imagination but ultimately there’s no telling whether it’s supposed to be deeper or if a designer just thought it was funny
And your point? I love both the protagonists and antagonists equally. I know that they're rivals, but that's entirely the point. The antagonist is ALWAYS the opposite to the protagonist. Ammy is life, Yami is death. Ammy is white with red markings, Yami is black with cyan markings. Ammy is nature, Yami is artificial. I already know all that, but I still love Yami above all. Cuz he's cool and cuz I can. Besides, SOMEONE needs to love the villains.
That mostly makes sense, but where are you getting the idea that Yami is black with cyan markings? Both its first and it's true forms are black with red markings.
@@anonymousalien7417 The true form of Yami is inside the sphere. See that little ball? Well that's him. He's like fish fetus inside a bowl. There you can see his cyan markings.
@@outofmyriver7346 Oh. I knew he was a Koi, but I never saw the cyan markings. I play on the Wii, so it's kind of hard to see detail in the smaller objects in the game.
It sounds hollow, cold, wailing, and writhing with despair... an incredible embodiment of evil has been waiting for you and you alone for a century, and it's now come time to fight it powerless.
yami's problems are simple, he got almost no backstory, neither motives(aside from be the god of darkness and the origin of all evil), and he doesnt even talk, putting this things together makes really hard to understand him, bosses like crimsom helm and the twin demons doesnt talk neither, yet you got a good amount of bacstory from the others characters, making you understand what they are and what they do or done, its really funny that bosses like blight and spider queen, who got almost no importance to the plots as general talk. now about yami being a fish, in my concept, he is protected by a large metal sphere that represent sin, no one can ever touch him without purify all those sins, thoses sins make yami menacing and powerful, but when you beat all of those, what rest? a defenseless little creature, yami got his powers from the flaws of his oponnet, but got none from himself.
Yami is the ultimate, formless evil, the mirror of Amaterasu. I think the lack of detail is intentional. To the end he is shrouded in mystery and, well, darkness, which explains his odd appearance, lack of dialogue, everything. It makes an incredible final boss experience. That's what I may have to add, I like your idea on the fish.
Ryuuji Latham Amaterasu got a backstory, why she is doing everything, but Yami, he is pure evil, the absolute void and darkness, as the idea of the sin, he is empty of everything, so he is evil. Has the evil an origin ? No, so Yami don't have any origin, he is just here, making the darkness, as Amaterasu is here just making the good.
@@maxrichards3881 I must disagree. I have plenty of fun replaying Data Xemnas (the super boss Version of that fight) again and again and Story Xemnas is not that hard. I love these Data super boss fights.
Because it was inscribed in LEGEND. The fact that he had been waiting on that ark for God-knows-how-long To Destroy Ammy makes him an even more Dark and intimidating enemy.
I have no idea why, but I've become obsessed with Yami. And I don't usually get obsessed with evil things. At least, I don't think I do. Maybe it's because he's really powerful.
I can't be the only one who find it amazing that I have played through Okami 3 times, and each time I beat this boss fight, I got an S rank, right? (S rank is where the trees for both Time and Damage are blooming.)
well next up is the gathering of the stray beads. The reward is really cool, dont spoil it for yourself if you dont already know it. I played through okami about 5 times, 2 of which i have gathered the stray beads in. if you get the S-rank for the whole game (after the credits i think) then you can call yourself a good player
The storyline was amazing!, One of the reasons I kept coming back to see what happened next!, I don't really think you needed to get to know Yami, you knew he was evil, the only thing that wasn't really explained was his backstory, either that or I can't remember it.
Underrated analogy, seeing as a Dandelion is a natural thing, spawned from nature itself. And the lawnmower is a creation of humans, as a way of shaping the world to suit our preferences, regardless of natures rules.
The Forms and Their Meaning of Humanity and Evil: Red Ball = Desire to Destroy Green Ball = Desire to Incinerate Blue Ball = Desire to Gamble and Take Risks Yellow Ball= Desire to Create Machines of Mass Destruction Final Form = Evil Comes From Human Hands Core (Fish) = Evil starts small
I feel like the final form isn't "Evil comes from human hands" as everyone says it is, but rather the fact that, in the end, it is not the evil that infected humanity, but humanity that created the evil, hence a hand, as hands are often times associated with creation rather than infection.
I honestly don't know why people hate Yami, I mean, he was actually a worthy opponent and pretty fun to fight. I personally think he's my favorite(maybe because of the OC's I draw of them xP ). I haven't really seen him do much in the game, I just wish he had more to do with the whole story, like the story of Orochi terrorizing Kamiki Village.
the theroy is that its supposed to be symbolic that even the weekest/inoccent things can be capable of the biggest evil. plus i bet it was a being of light before akura got his greedy eye on him
Relating back to what Jhugh95 said, you don't even know who Akuro is until the second game comes out, much less figure out that he is the controller of Yami, while in Okamiden everyone you meet has at least heard of Amaterasu once. Amaterasu is known due to she herself going out and saving everyone, while Akuro uses other mediums to do his work, only known until the very end.
In that case, I think a lot of the enjoyment of the game passed you by unfortunately. I enjoyed Okami so thoroughly because of how deeply engaging its characters and story were, and it's sad that it didn't make the same impact on everyone, but oh well. Still though, I'm glad you enjoyed the parts of the game that you did.
I've been through quite a journey, haven't I? Every step.. Every action.. They all led to this moment. I.. I have to bring all light and hope back to the world we all love. Yami, as we all know, is a fish with similar markings to mine, but blue. He has engolfed himself into a machine and brought darkness to the world out of pure SADNESS and RAGE. He wasn't having a good life, so why should they? Thus begun the darkest times.. The darkest hours.. I.. am against Yami. I.. am Okami Amaterasu.
"First Form: Humanity's desire to destroy. Second Form: Humanity's desire to burn (use wood and coal and damages nature). Third Form: Humanity's desire to gamble (aka risk their and others lives). Fourth Form: Humanity's desire to use energy for destructive ends. Final Form: Humanity's uses their hands for evil. True Organic Self: Something so small can be very dangerous and anything born is innocent but can become evil." -quote by 18bryflo11 He truly the embodiment of all that is evil.
Ever notice how throughout the game, fish are generally the least important or most dangerous creatures? The god of the sea wasn't even a fish, it was a snake! The Water Dragon (I'll count him as some kind of eel) was for the most part an unstoppable death bringer, and all the other fish encountered (Yami excluded) were canon fodder for minigames. If there's any lesson to take from this game, it's that fish are bastards.
You know, what I never understood was why Waka's swords(one of which is essentially a lightsaber) couldn't do anything to Yami, but Amaterasu's teeth and claws could do damage.
Unfortunately I can tell you that I didn't have any of those moments. The moment I cared about the most was when Susano revealed his skepticism, and when he wasn't a fool. I wasn't sure what to expect from the storyline. It was an immersive world, but not really an immersive story. Aside from the difficulty, the story is one of my negative points, but aside from that, the game was fun, enjoyable, and probably the most creative game I have ever seen, and I hope to play through it again soon.
I think i get it. Their really was no build build up for yami. While it is established that he's the main villan it's all focused on late in the game. And the bits you do find out early aren't really focused on long enough to give you a feeling that he's the one responsible for everything else that happed to you.
