Musician's reaction and review of LORNA SHORE Pain Remains trilogy 

I actually got into death core bc of lorna shore and have been exploring more of the genre and it has opened my mind and tastes in music. They truly are talented and genuine people.

Don't ever apologize for not liking a genre of music. Thank you for listening to this beautiful trilogy. But yes I listen to this anytime I'm driving or sometimes even if I'm just relaxing

I think half of the reason this song kicks so hard is down to the lyrics, to not have them up whilst reacting means you've missed so much. It's a real emotional tear jerker. I had goosebumps seeing them live last month!

Great reaction sir! Deathcore definitely isn't for everyone, but that's okay. I like how you went into this with an open mind. I also appreciate your honest yet respectful opinion on the songs. 👍 I personally love deathcore when I'm doing any kind of physical work, whether it is stuff at home or when I'm at work. I love blasting it when I'm driving around too. The speed and energetic vibes that I get off the music just makes everything I'm doing more enjoyable.

Taste differs, but always nice to see people give credit where credit is due, even if the music as a whole is totally not their cup of tea. Too many people dismiss stuff as "bad" only because they don't like it. This album as a whole is basically my one and only foray into deathcore as well, I was never able to warm up to the genre outside of appreciating the insane skill needed to play it. But man, this album... Totally deserved the countless "album of the year" lists it made.

It's somehow become a hobby of mine to watch non-deathcore fans listen to Lorna Shore music. Your bewildered expressions were a joy to watch 😄 Even if you didn't quite like it, I appreciate that you sat through it all and gave it a chance. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts at the end. Me personally, I'm a more a melodic death metal fan, and I couldn't get into deathcore until I heard Lorna Shore. I'm obsessed with their music now. Lorna Shore is turning out to be a gateway band for people to get into the genre, which is awesome. With this kind of extreme music, I think it's more about acclimatising to the sound first before you can get to the stage where it's enjoyable (and even fun). Maybe listen to a few more songs off the album then come back to these and see how you feel afterwards. But if you still don't like it after that, or if you don't feel like trying again, that's cool too. Thanks for the reaction!

Lorna Shore is great. Its their style: the evilness is going up to the end of the song. Starts with a glorious music, ends with the deepest places of hell. Deathcore isnt for everyone. Its hard to go up there, i get on the top really quick. I'm 14, and im in metal from my born cause my dad. He is a great metalhead. He leaded me to this hard music what i love. Feels like home i can literally chill on these songs.

First! One of the best albums of last year such a beautiful masterpiece in the last 3 tracks.

I would recommend Soulless Existence from the album. It's different but very good. Even if you don't do a reaction to it i recommend it, there is no music video for it so a lyric video will probably help, but it's easier to hear the lyrics in that song the first time you hear it compared to alot of them :P

I start my mornings off with lorna shore on my work days. Love them so much.

As others have mentioned, this was without a doubt my album of the year last year. I’ll try to summarise why I like it so much, but it’s not easy 😅 As a drummer like you, I think when I first started listening to deathcore, the musicianship is what drew me to it, but I also found the blast beats and endless kicks too much to handle after extended listening. These days, the blast beat and kicks actually fall back in the mix in my ears, I know they are there, but the guitar work and the vocals are more present, which is the opposite for when I listen to something like SFTP, where the groove and feel of the drums occupies my entire soundscape and I can’t help myself to nod along and be entirely focussed on the drums. I think I eventually desensitised to the unrelenting drums in deathcore, and started to listen to the other parts and the finer details. I sometimes find this easier to listen to than a lot of other sub genres of metal haha. With this trilogy specifically, I constantly get goosebumps from the lyrics and the melodies, I think it’s beautiful. I totally understand why you don’t like it, but I really appreciate you giving it a proper listen, so thank you!

I have never been a fan of pure chaotic primal death metal… but this is perfection. The emotion and intensity are matched by the beauty of the melody. The writing is on point as well.

im an old school death metal head, i started listening to DM in the early 90's, Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Cannibal Corpse lover. i didnt like much Deathcore when it started, kthe first Despised Icon album, the first Suicide Silence album, after that i didnt really pay much attention to the death core scene, they all sounded the same-ish, but then years later, i hear Lorna Shore, and i realized this new era of DeathCore bands are taking influence from other genres like Black Metal and Symphonic metal, and i absolutely love this band, saw them live back in October, and they were absolutely amazing.

I appreciate you diving into this band despite your not being so much into it, I think you appreciated the song for what it was and acknowledging that but still saying it's not your cup of tea is very understandable. I used to not care for anything too heavy but something about the way they do it gets me ready to come back for more.

It took me something like half a year to go from "To The Hellfire is insanely good but too much of everything" to it being part of my "I want something to sooth myself" playlist. Acquired taste.

Andrew is so underrated. He does all of the orchestral and operatic composing. He also does the final mix. It's a big part of why Lorna Shore sounds like they do now vs. Flesh Coffin style.

For me anyway I find this music very relaxing and Lorna Shore is one of my favorite bands🤘

When do I want this? Always. This is my drive to work music, and my drive home. My relaxing in hot tub music. My baking brownies in the kitchen music. I love all types of music from oldies to deathcore and every thing in between, but this stuff holds a special place in my heart. I appreciate your take on it, especially recognizing the talent it takes to do all of this. I think metal music is peak "talent" when it comes to playing your instrument. If you can do this shit, you can play anything.

What a great reaction, I especially loved the moments where you couldn't hold the giggles. I know many people get pumped when they hear something like this but for me it's the opposite. A massive sound of wall melts my brain just enough to calm my head and my body unlike anything else. I actually tested this a week ago with my sports watch and can officially confirm that Lorna Shore is relaxing, my heart rate stayed around 50 bpm the whole 20 minutes of Pain remains trilogy.

The wall of sound is all about layering and production is extremely important. I think as with any complex, layered music there is an acclimation required. I listen to Lorna Shore, Archspire, Bloodshot Dawn, and the like every day and familiarity does very much play a role in the casual enjoyment of very technical metal.

I'll be honest, usually if i see that the reactors is not into it, i find the reaction less compelling and probably people like me are the reasons why out there reactors overreact to everything and seems to always enjoy everything, BUT...your reaction was still really enjoyable, you were honest and...i'd say "fair". I mean, the first times i listened to Lorna Shore was with "to the hellfire" about an year ago, and i remembered me saying to myself "ok, that's was definetely the heaviest thing i've ever heard, but that's not for me". I was a metalcore guy used to Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Bullet For My Valentine, Architects so Lorna Shore was a step forward in heaviness. Now...Lorna Shore are by far my favourite band and i really don't know why, after some other listens here and there i got used to them and now i find that a lot of things i was listen to years ago are now slow and boring to me. I still enjoy some metalcore, groove metal and djent here and there but now Lorna Shore are like my thing (not deathcore actually, just Lorna Shore). Who knows what triggered in my brain, i hope maybe it can triggers in yours too one day but if it don't...that's fine too!

I guess I'll be the weird one to say that i get both your point and at the same time, joining the multitudes of people calling the entire album a masterpiece. Personally, I've gone from being a tradional metal fan who couldn't stomach harsh vocals to a dedicated melodeath and deathcore fan. It was a gradual process. If you're interested in going deeper into the genre, I'd suggest listening to Orbit Culture first. Since you mentioned you like the groove part, i velieve you'd really appreciate them and, lets say, ease your way into the deathcire mindset. As for when i want that wall of sound to smash my face into oblivion, all the time. I actually find it relaxes me. The weird guy, remember? I wanna fucking thank Lorna shore let alone will Ramos for making this beautiful yet say trilogy cuz I lost someone that I wasn't exactly close to but she was my mom's sister that died of a drug OD and it really broke me cuz she was only 58 years Old and I've been listening to this trilogy on repeat for days 😢

I love that despite obviously not being your thing, you saw all three parts through. Deathcore is absolutely hard to get into, it was a process of years for me. But once you're in, once your ear is trained to these vocals and how the instrumentation in the genre usually is...these three tracks are art. Especially if you're able to put yourself in the position of the actor in the video. These songs are absolutely cathartic...my grandfather is 93 and just had a stroke two weeks ago. He's alive, but he's not going to "get better." This is the end for him, even if they manage to stave it off for a few months. In the process of dealing with this, all the emotions I dealt with when my father died of cancer 6 years ago came racing right back in. Sometimes you want music that's slow and somber and lets you bask in each measure and sometimes you want music that expresses that anger, the pain, the grief, the frustration. Will's voice, Austin's drums, Adam's guitar, they're the expression of my pain right now. Again, this obviously isn't your thing, but in the process of reacting to these tracks maybe you've shared them with someone else that hadn't heard them before and can also resonate with them like I do. Thank you for that.

I think you would possibly enjoy two of their other songs To the hellfire and Suneater. A lot of fun. And the inhuman vocals alone. This sort of metal if youre not used to it takes replays, time, to appreciate the different layers in it. This 3 parter like was a emotional rollercoaster. I still cant listen to part 1 without crying. Deathcore isnt known for ballads but they have got metalheads crying every where.

I’d be flabbergasted if everyone who reacted to deathcore outside of the musical space said they liked it. The fact that you can nod to the musicianship is enough. Most people hear noise but a lot of these bands have serious talent if you break it down and just listen. Thanks for the honest feedback 🤘🏼

Lovely reaction. Is nice to have honest opinions. And is fine if this is not your cup of tea. What is important is that you understand the talent and hard work of the band. For me this is all i listen to cause it always calms me down and helps me relax and go to a happy place in my mind and soul. I sleep to this kind of music cause it helps me fall asleep in under 2 minutes. That is how much it makes me forget about everything stressful and negative. I started years ago with less agressive styles of rock and slowly craved for more and more. Now i mostly listen to death core and styles close to it. I found out that this type of vocals and chaos helps me relax and i kinda became addicted to it.

I say this as a total Stan for Austin Archey, but he uses Roland RT-30 bass drum triggers, which very much explains the consistency of every hit. I don’t think it takes away from the performance, myself.

It is almost too intense for me. But I get both the sadness and the relief this brings. 👍🎶🤘🖖

I think your view of this as a piece of art is how it should be viewed in my opinion. Invariably this won't be someone's cup of tea musically, but I think this, and other music or art that we don't like, should be viewed. You don't have to like the music or the message or anything, but you must appreciate artistry and mastery of a craft.

to be fair it does take time to adjust to death core/ blackened death core. think of it like the deep end of a pool, you need to learn to swim before jumping off into the deep end. for a long time i couldn't stand it but as time went on pulling little pieces into playlist i was listening to i found i really do enjoy it. if you haven't i'd give the lyrics a read (though by this time i'm sure you have) because they are very deep. Lorna Shore does actually use a fair bit of orchestra in some of their songs. if you are trying to find a place you'd listen to this type try it when you work out or go for a run to start. i, personally, listen to this on most days. it actually relaxes me because it does like white noise would do but you'd have to get used to it first.💜

What happened to you is you drank from a firehose. It doesn't really matter what the liquid is at that point. You really do get used to it and learn to hear everything there is, not just the blastbeat and harsh lyrics. Deathcore really has a lot of great musicianship in there.

I don't mind Lorna Shore, but I do appreaciate all the skill and talent that goes into it. Deathcore isn't really my genre though, for the zoom zoom metal I'm more into tech death like Achspire for example.

I’m going to see them live in a few weeks, they are opening for Mastodon and Gojira…I’m excited to see Lorna Shore live to be honest. But it’s still not my thing, I guess.

I'm a big fan of Lorna Shore, not so much deathcore in general. LS have amazing melodic overtones and it's universe of sound to get lost in at the end of a mad day at the office. I like to read through the lyrics of a new song to get a feel for it, and then just turn the volume up, close my eyes and experience it in an almost meditative state

I agree with most of your thoughts, with the caveat that I really love this particular song hahah. I think there's just enough melody in it for me to latch onto, and the guitar solos are beyond beautiful. By the way, this song is considered "soft" for their standards, so you probably wouldn't enjoy listening to anything else by them. I'll be the contrarian here in the comments and say that I was disappointed by the album - it felt way too repetitive for me. You know the ridiculously low breakdown you heard in Pt. III here? Yeah, that happens 12 times in the album. Not a fan. I also have a serious issue with these music videos, and I prefer to enjoy the music without them. There's been talk in the community about suicide prevention and how these three videos have helped people process their pain, and that's great! And I'm not trying to take that catharsis away from them. But the fact is that these videos show a very simple sequence of events: this man loses his partner, sees no way out, has no support around him and kills himself. His act at the end is the logical, natural conclusion. Period. The videos completely lack the "prevention" nuance, and therefore they send a very dangerous message to someone who watches this and does not have a support network around them. The whole death metal spectrum has struggled for years with a "lonely angry men" epidemic, and they are most likely to be (very) negatively impacted by what they saw.

I think you need to take a step back and evaluate what they are trying to convey, read the lyrics, as you listen and watch the video again particularly Pain Remains 1. It is 100% a wall of sound, but the expression held with in is so perfectly on point, and because your not reading the lyrics, you can't get fully absorbed. Also I have to say that I have dabbled in Deathcore over the years all the way back to 2009, suicide silence and a few other bands were my entry point and I sounded exactley like you, "this is absolutely amazing musicianship, but it's not for me" keep checking it out enough and eventually when it clicks, all the songs that your now saying "not for me" will suddenly take on an entirely different landscape. A song in particular that I think of a lot is "Disengage" by Suicide Silence, one of my buddy's showed it to me originally and I just didn't get it, but I found myself gravitating toward it, it just never clicked. When "to the hellfire" by Lorna Shore released, I heard it and said the same thing but kept going back to it, over the course of a month I probably found myself listening to that song hundreds of times, and somewhere in the first 4 or 5 playthroughs, it clicked. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it before, but I didn't fully understand it, but man when it clicked, I wanted nothing more than All of the Deathcore all the time. Keep doing reactions, and maybe one day it will all click, if you haven't already, "To the Hellfire" should have been your intro to Lorna Shore, and if you thought this was a wall of sound....oh boy your in for a surprise

The key change gives me such a musical boner it's not funny. I am an absolute sucker for a perfect key change... and the one in After all I've Done hits the soul just right. I gotta be really careful watching these videos. Death hits me really hard for personal reasons, and I've never finished the videos (any of them) dry lol. Not to mention the actor has the PERFECT thousand yard stare, and that just hurts to see. Their "return to nothingness" ep is what got me into any form of deathcore. I've been borderline obsessed with Ramos era Lorna Shore since. I have never in my life heard an album end so unbelievably perfect. Such an emotional, beautiful masterpiece

Personally, I'll listen to this at any time of day or night. I've been known to listen on headphones in bed before going to sleep. I've listened whilst working and whilst sitting around doing nothing. I guess I'm just in to it, so it doesn't make a difference to me.

Yeah, since you see it as a wall of sound and too much it is most likely just that you aren't used to the genre. Because the composition in this trilogy is phenomenal and so much more than just "a lot"

Focus on the underlying melody and not on the brrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Let the melody away you away and you’ll understand why some are absolutely in love with it.

I would strongly recommend re-watching with the lyrics nearby. Lorna Shore has created what can only be described as a masterpiece of modern art. The lyrics, the story behind the emotion, is what drives this far more than blast beats and guttural screams. If you do re-watch with lyrics, try not to focus so much on the music theory. Focus on the way the music makes you feel. Each of the 3 parts has a very distinct emotion it is portraying. Anyone that has experienced loss should be able to relate to the feeling of each song.

You honestly don't need to understand the words the video tells you everything. It's meant to be melancholy to invoke that feeling of despair
