MWO Build & Skills : BlackHawk-Ku - The First I.S. Omnimech in MWO

The BlackHawk-Ku is finally here and not only is it a new mech for us mech fans, but it is also the FIRST INNER SPHERE OMNI-MECH in Mechwarrior Online! This opens up new opportunities for potentially more I.S. Omnimechs and that's very exciting!
Making a simple 14 ER Medium Laser build on the -OX and I was surprised at its tankiness, mobility and firepower. Definitely not OP but definitely a very fun and effective mech.
It does have a locked XL engine which has caused some people to whine about it in the forums but practice and improvement, one learns to love the IS XL (although it is more fragile) due to the fact that the extra tonnage saved goes to speed, firepower and/or better heat management.

Yeah, first thing we did was test the XL engine in the lab. Lose a torso, go bye-bye. But, it's a lot tankier than a regular nova which falls apart pretty easily. Good Japanese craftsmanship!

I was initially worried , pre launch, that the IS XL combined with Nova-ish hitboxes on a less-agile-than-Nova chassis would be pretty bad. However, I was pleasantly surprised that this initial worry was unfounded. Surprisingly tanky, good mobility and decent firepower was a nice surprise. Others have been doing well in it too so overall, a pretty great and fun mech that's decent in performance but not OP. - BrioS

I've had astounding success with this mech. It's quite durably armored, even when I was being blasted by multiple people at a time it took a significant time to bring me down (Over five seconds of sustained fire from four assaults) the primary issue is if you do not properly manage your heat, you'll be left a sitting duck. In T1 I've noticed the stock 14 ML build is just fine, I rarely get below 1100 points per match with it after swapping them all to ERML, and with full quirks I can spam 7+7 quite a few times before my heat becomes an issue. All in all, give it a wait if you are unsure, the event is running for another 53ish days so there is plenty of time for that.

@@ClanBRxV Enjoy the game (again after burn out last year) but still do dislike the defeats :P. Happy to know when I come back that the Nascar never changes. Has been many years of Nascar since the start. The mech is fun, but not super high alpha 1000 dmg scores yet. My skill level rusty.

I was hoping the XL engine would have clan characteristics. So this kinda went from a must buy to a wait, and see for me.

Well, I can understand the locked IS XL is a put off for many and I can respect that. Thankfully it is pretty tanky (ie. Good hp and decent hitboxes) despite the XL. Also lots of other mechs in the game so it's no big loss not having one 🫡 - BrioS

I might pick it up because I've been clamoring for IS Omnis for a while now and think they're a good idea, but otherwise this seems like playing a chunkier Nova that doesn't punish bad positioning as much. I'm also mixed about the additional two laser hardpoints compared to the canon version; while it was obviously done so it can have equal alpha damage output to the Nova it seems like it negates the main advantage of IS lasers over Clan lasers which IMO is damage over time. I usually accept having a bit less juicy alpha number because I know I can put it out more frequently before having to disengage to cool off because let's be honest, it's not like the target typically does much to avoid that damage anyway regardless of tier I'm also a die-hard dirty Clanner tho so of course I prefer the Nova lol

Well, as the first IS Omnimech it isn't too bad and it does play like a Nova. The ballistic one is funny to play but can also push out lots of damage. Overall, not a bad mech! - BrioS

What do you think about the advanced sensor package? Not necessarily for this mech, but in general

I love them. Advanced zoom is weightless, but it's also blinding and janky (hard to adjust aim). I've replaced advanced zoom with an advanced sensor package in every long range mech that had head space. Wider field of view, and the mouse sensitivity doesnt change, making it worth the ton and a half (usually just drop a heatsink and shave a bit of armor).

What hohenzollern6025 said is true. Quite a few have put in ASP for that better zoom without using Adv zoom for the reasons he stated. With ASP, BAP and skills, one can also get 100+% Targeting Info which basically gives instant paper doll info too. All these options make it a great option to have, especially on longer range builds. Not bad considering it evolved from Command Console which no one in their sane mind would use. Glad this change was done. - BrioS

Interesting your feedback about its survivability ; from my (limited) experience, it still takes a lot in the sides. Is it a matter of playstyle or something, I wonder... But I'm not a XL hater, and I'm not sure I'd go LFE if I had the choice. Anyway, it's a fun mech, I like it so far. Btw, did you tested the ballistic and missile omnipods?

I'm indifferent to the XL issue, people are going to shoot your arms off usually anyway.

Almost never do your opponents intentionally aim for your arms. Why not just hit the bigger ST and they lose the arm anyway. Or in the case of the BHK-KU - explodes

What omnipods does it have access to? Ballistics or missiles?

The mech pack comes with additional arms. It has a ballistic LA and RA with awesome ballistic quirks (but very low pod tonnage). There is also a LA with 2 missile hardpoints. Fun thing is that one can do a dual uAC2 build that has a shorter cooldown than you can click which is damn funny to see 🤭 - BrioS

Yeah, it was a fun match and those lasers can really act like scalpels and deliver that damage to secure those kills. Just funny that my (twitch) chat was happily spamming my sound alerts to try to distract me. 🤣 - BrioS
