Get-there-itis. A known condition that describes most cross country flights if they aren't just for training purposes.
I chose to go VFR. Honestly, I was worried about being late, about being cut off by forecast worsening weather and missing an immensely important day.
UPDATE FEB 2022: I infringed airspace in this video, without realising it. Am now doing re-training as ordered by CAA and doing a video about it.
I'd been waiting to see this opera, Tristan and Isolde, for more than 10 years. It had been almost impossible to get hold of the tickets. My mother had gone to extraordinary lengths to arrange care for my step father who needs 24/7 supervision due to dementia. It was the first time in many years that she had managed to arrange to attend an event just for her and in the context of our family situation this was a critically important day.
It just so happened that both cars were unavailable to me as well. But, albeit a sub-optimal plan, I knew the worst case was that I could fly along the coast and get into Shoreham, then get a taxi the last 17 miles. It was my only option.
However, it strengthened my resolve to use my IMC rating more, and on the return flight the next day, in Part 2, I chose to fly my first solo IFR flight in more than 6 years back to Devon.
I don't seek any promotion of my personal vlog channel, it's a family video diary, but if you'd like to support me, I'd be grateful if you followed my other channel, Moving Home with Charlie, which is where I'm working on finding an end to homelessness.
