I took me 3 trips to really dial in the technique for surfperch. I headed to a wreck on a December morning and in managed to snap off two rigs and break my rod in the first hour! I got snagged and pulled too hard--resulting in breaking my ultra-light Ugly Stik. Over the next two hours, I dialed in my perch technique--landing an additional 6-8 on my newly minted half-rod.
I dropped down one last time with my remaining shrimp tiles in exactly the same water I had been fishing when line started PEELING out. About 10 minutes later I managed to net a 10 lb king on half an ultra-light spinning rod!
