Hey Bruce, my cousin owens a small trucking company. Only runs local. He doesn't use log books or ELD. Just send them you daily time card showing you clock in and out every day for work. If you don't have a time clock, then a paper journal of the time you work is sufficient. They want to just make sure your work hours are not more than what is legal.

Get a 3 Ring Binder to hold all these documents in. Get page protectors. So nice just to hand a binder over to inspection officers with all you need and more in it.

don't forget Bruce just because a vehicle passed the inspection at the time of the inspection, doesn't mean that won't fail within the year. so make sure you do a visual check at very least before a long run or once a month which ever is soonest.

The FMCSA Periodic Inspection is required annually. The reality is if you're only getting your equipment inspected once a year, you're doing a disservice to it. In California, we're required to do a periodic inspection every 90 calendar days. Even doing something similar to that at least once a quarter is a good idea. Solid pre and post trip inspections along with making sure whomever is doing your A and B services are also giving your equipment a once over is a good standard. Too many new carriers miss the most basic stuff on new entrant audits.

I gave up on dealing with the log book debate. I just started running elogs. Made my life a little more relaxed too. I was running definitely only a-couple minutes over what they want before but resting more kinda made my life feel better. I use mine to haul equipment I buy and flip not for hire.

I worked for Crum back in 90s,hauling citrus pellets to the Port of Tampa.Schwend had trucks doing it also.

I was working at a Peterborough dealership, and given a work order to perform a PDI inspection ( pre delivery inspection ) the truck was just delivered to the dealership, directly from the factory in Denton , TX. It failed the inspection. A brand new truck . Lol. It had a wheel seal leaking.

Get a paper logbook. For any day you didn't drive the truck, put "Not in Service" date, truck number, etc. Fill out for 30 consecutive days. Any days driven for deliveries day of inspection or other truck related errands. Fill out for hours and times driven. Then you will have for that...hope that helps.

Hi, just watching your video and noticed you have disc brakes on your truck, this is the main reason you're having trouble with your new trailer brakes ,because disc brakes run higher air pressure it is supplying to much air pressure, drum brakes require less air pressure, that's why you're flat spotting tyres and over heating brakes, you will need to drop service brake application pressure to trailer to stop extreme braking which is happening at the moment, had same issue in Australia ,disc brakes on truck ,drum brakes on trailer, they don't match up well

Before retiring I operated a dump truck business, we were not required to keep a daily log however we were required to to keep time cards on each driver. I purchased a used time clock from a nearby company that closed with a case of unused time cards for $35.00 at auction.

For what that truck cost you I’m surprised that the Stealership didn’t have it inspected for you, it’s good business for them. Call it customer satisfaction.

Dealing with the FMCSA / DOR, etc is a major stressor. Glad to see your getting it all squared away.

Bruce I've seen them stainless polished discs for the diesels that go behind the wheel to keep the dust from gutting all them and pitting the wheels

Even with the 150 air mile exemption, u found out you still have to do a log book, it will have to show not only your hours trucking but also your hours worked doing other things around your shop etc for a period of 7 days prior and i think after each trip. Also you have to do a pretrip as part of your logbook. I hope you had an annual done on your trailer too, cause it is required as well

that company's right down the road from me! I remember when all they had was the t600's when I was a kid! then when my grandparents moved here they had all the old pickle barrel style trailers and the k100 and w900as!

You probably already know it(?) but your trailers also have to be inspected annually. Since I dont know what your exact setup is (?), you might want to get a Permit Book (you can get them at the larger truckstops) and keep it in your truck. In the permit book, you should keep any cab cards(permits) you have (IFTA,etc), your tractor registration, trailer registrations, annual vehicle inspection reports on both tractor and trailers, MC registration cards/documents, and insurance cards, etc. You will be asked for all of that if you are inspected on the road somewhere? If you have all of that in a Permit Book, you can just take the permit book in with you and give them what they ask for? The trailer registration and trailer inspection report is usually kept on the front of the trailer in a document holder but since you only have one or two you pull, you can probably keep the documents in your permit book? Any trailer you pull should have a trailer registration (showing who its registered to) and inspection report on it. Like Kevin said, you can make a permit book out of a notebook with page protectors in it? I just always used a permit book because its always set up the way you need it and you can usually zip it up so nothing will fall out.

It's always good to conduct your pretrip inspections. There are some great videos you can find on RU-vid that walks you through step by step on what to look at. I used the videos to study for my CDL license.

Get an electronic ELD in your truck. I believe samsara works with your iPhone. It’s just a little box and antenna that you install that also splits off your diag port. You should be doing logs no matter what, even if it in town.

Got to have dot inspection sticker on your trailers too.

U should try and get with a Contruction Site Preparation development company that also runs there own trucks / Dump trucks as they probably will understand your DOT situation better then a standard trucking company,. also that low boy flat bed your having the brake problems with too as they are around and operate all types of Hevey equipment too

Get with a company called TCS compliance. it cost some money but it’s worth it having them do all the leg work with the paperwork and stuff. Plus they keep everything compliant. You are less likely to have an audit with a company like them keeping up with your stuff.

Any DOT station will inspect the truck for free. If qualified you just fill out the paperwork and sticker and apply to truck. Also if you check all these items at every service interval your annual inspection will always be current, just change sticker and file paperwork. Same goes for trailer. Now to get trailer inspection done?

I use my pete to haul my monster truck I went through the same hassle. I re registered my truck with a dot exemption and now things are so much better

I hope you will resolve the situation because it’s a really stressful thing with the FMCSA.

I’m using the Keep Truckin app on my iPad. You can go back and redo as far as you need. They can also sell you an ELD if that’s the route you decide to go.

Here in New England, vehicle safety inspections are required for EVERY vehicle. Every year.

Bruce make sure you do not use (Tractor Hydraulic oil) in the lift. That will destroy the seals. Use standard Hydraulic oil. Love your vids, keep th coming bro, God bless you and your family, Mr. Animal.

When I did my 30 day worth of logs. I went ahead and gave them 90 days of logs. With receipts showing proof of logs. That’s all they need. I always give them more than the basic stuff. And passed mine with flying colors.

that FMCSA audit isn't that big a deal i've been through a few over the years , i've had my own authority for over 20 years ,the new audit for 2022 was a bit more in depth ,,i had more problem with IFTA because i almost never leave my home state of iowa ,,i do mostly short hops , hauling farm machinery for farmers who don't want to road their equipment, ,logbook entries for mileage and hours are crazy because i might haul 5 or 6 loads in a day and very rarely have more than 4-6 hours of driving time during a day and i might only drive 150 miles

the easiest thing to do would be to just get DOT numbers, but yours wont be the same as a for hire carrier. it will be so much simpler. you still have to have driver files ect but your insurance is 1,000 times cheaper and if you dont ever go out of the 150 mile range you dont have to log and so on. You dont need a MC though because you arent for hire. its complicted but not lol

Look into getting ceramic brake pads. Should reduce or eliminate brake dust

Didn’t check brake chambers? They did a pretty light inspection compared to what we look at

That check you had done is the same as the 6 weekly inspection we have done in the UK , and if you don’t do them or falsify the paper work you could lose you operators licence and get large fine

If you haven’t done it yet, i would call Tim and Mrs Tim about this FMSCA routine. Tim did a video just recently and seemed to have the process down. This kind of BS from the govt makes dotting I’s and T’s that more important. You and know it’s hard to fight City Hall, pick your battles!👍🏽👍🏽

For log book look into big road it's an eld that's easy to work and it can be installed on ur phone

You wouldn't happen to have an hx35 intake housing just laying around In the way would you? Doing the swap on my 1st gen and accidently dunked the housing in the acid instead of purple power and smoked it 😅

not 100% sure on this but i would have thought your dealer would have done that inspection for you as part of the new truck inspection they do when a truck comes in and made ready for the buyer on that FMCSA ask them if you can use the same time clock your hired hands use to log their week on if so that should work i think Bruce

I am a safety professional in construction. With government agencies, just do over and above. This means log no matter what.

I wouldn’t word this as a battle. It’s doing what you’re supposed to as a motor carrier to be legal

Get your self a inspection book right up some for the last few days if you’re just staying in Florida you should be able to stay within your 170 mile range I think that’s what it is I’m from Canada and we can only do 120 km from our home terminal..

If your not running a log you have to keep track of your hours. That's what they mean by time cards. Your still required to follow the hours of service rules if you aren't running a log.

That’s the cleanest Flat nose Pete I’ve seen in a long while Congrats on that most are slapped out and rough , I do mechanic work on Semi trailers and do the FHWA inspections it’s really simple and you can coast through the scales if you know all the requirements and how picky they are

You should have to run e-logs on that.

You can submit your time cards for your local work. Just make sure you aren't clocked in for more than 12 hours at a time and have at least 10 hours off duty between days. When I used to work local, we had our time cards that they paid us off of, and then we kept a daily movement sheet to turn in for logs.
